Item Open Access Anglo-American teen literature in translation(Routledge, 2017) Okyayuz, A. Ş.Examples of popular Anglo-American teen literature are translated into many languages, reaching millions of children from different cultures. From a translators’ perspective, this is a complex endeavor, since translations of popular AngloAmerican literature for teens necessitates unique approaches and knowledge about readership, markets, intertexual, and intercultural mediation across languages, which translators have to take into account in the translation process. This article provides an example of this endeavor, with emphasis on the use of paratexts, the existence of intermedial rewriting, intertexuality, style, and culture, through a multidimensional study of the translations of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series into Turkish. Item Open Access Baudelaire'in çift görünümlü oda'sında yansımalar(Ürün Yayınları, 2004) Sunel, A. Hamitin this research the author translated "La Chambre Double" the fıfth poem in Baudelaire's book of "Petits Poemes en Prose". in this research, the author tries to analyze the poem on the basis of the original poet's system of thought by establishing similarities between the descriptions of the room and some events in life. in both descriptions of the room, the author tries to explain that every word and every sentence reflects a universal point of view of the original poet and that every event correspond with something in the poet's real life. The author, at the same time, wants to know who the idol that foverned imaginary throne of pleasure was. He also wishes to investigate who the spectre and the disguised persons are. Moreover, he attempts to explain why the poet considers the bottle of laudanum an old and dreadful friend and to which events, the description of the room refers.Item Open Access Bazı Türk ve Fransız şairlerinde ölüm: birkaç örnek(Ürün Yayınları, 2008) Sunel, A.HamitWhatever his/her belief may be a person who deserves the name of Jıuman being, has been trying to fınd out the meaning of life throughout his/her life. In fact, the aim of philosophy aııd cvcıı of religions is to attribute meaning to life and help human beings live accordingly. What do the answers to such questions as "Who anı I?", "Where do I come from where do I want to go?", "What's life?, How should I live?" come from? The existence of death leads us the source of answers to such questions. Furthermore, it is undeniable that death plays a big role in how we shape our lives and activities. For this reason, death has been a commun subject of every type of literature. There are few authors and poets who do not deal with the reflections of death on the materialistic and moral aspects of our lives. In this study, we presented different aspects of death in poems from French poets such as Villon, Ronsard, Lamartine, Victor Hugo and Baudelaire, and from Turkish poets such as Yunus Emre, Karacaoğlan, Recaizade Ekrem, Abdülhak Hamid, Yahya Kemal, Faruk Nafiz et Cahit Sıtkı. The aims of this paper is not to research the philosophical and religious dimensions of death according to these poets, but rather to try to show how some feelings inspired by death are reflected in this poets linesItem Open Access Beckett'in ayak sesleri adlı tiyatro eserinde zihinde yankılanmalar(Ürün Yayınları, 2016) Bayrakçeken-Akın, AylinFootfalls was written by Saınuel Beckett in 1975 and was first peıfoımed at the Royal Court Theah·e as part of the Samuel Beckett Festival on May 20, 1976. Item Open Access Breaking the vicious cycle between migration and environmental degradation: The role of government(IGI Global, 2022) Gedikli, Ayfer; Taş, Nur Billur; Yalçın, Abdullah KutalmışFor many decades the world witnessed mass displacements. Migration can be either voluntary or forced depending on the reasons. Mass migration can be also due to climate changes that harden the living conditions. Since there is a bidirectional nexus between migration and environmental degradation, the dramatic increase of refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants greatly affect the environment and conservation efforts. Globally, the movement of people has caused different types of ecosystem changes including deforestation, water, and air pollution, as well as increased waste. Furthermore, as a two-edged sword for conservation, urbanization and growing population cause increasing per capita demand for energy, goods, and services. In this chapter, migration and sudden-onset and slow-onset hazards, the correlation between migration and environmental degradation, environmental and economic effects on the destination, as well as the role of government during migration processes will be analyzed. Item Open Access Contribution of translations and adaptations to the birth of Turkish pop music(Asian Journal of Humanities and Social Studies, 2016) Okyayuz, A. Ş.Popular songs are important multimodal mass media products through which cultures are communicated to people of different backgrounds, and these are widely translated. But, the study of the translations of popular songs has been partially neglected in translation studies. In an effort to contribute to filling this gap, the article aims to underline the importance of the translation and adaptation of songs; to explain how songs were translated and adapted to give birth to Turkish pop music; and to provide an example of an instance where sociopolitical and cultural realities and aspirations, aided by different translational strategies, helped shape a new music culture.Item Open Access Disability and the implication of coaccessibility: a case study on accessibility to the media in Turkey(SAGE Publications, 2020) Okyayuz, Ayşe Şirin; Kaya, M.Media accessibility has been an important issue on the international agenda since the early 21st century. Many countries have achieved major developments in media accessibility, while others like Turkey are currently embarking on the journey. The following article discusses developments in media accessibility in Turkey with emphasis on disability and the implication of coaccessibility which may be defined broadly as appealing to audiences with differing accessibility needs, through the translation(s) inputted on a single product. The research so far seems to indicate that coaccessibility has potential political, social, educational and other implications. Turkish end-users embrace the current coaccessibility model, but the ultimate goal in accessibility for Turkey is to have optional sign language interpreting, audio description and subtitling for the D/deaf and hard of hearing and the actors need to strive to achieve this. Currently, it also falls to academics to research this phenomenon of coaccessibility, learn from it, both in terms of the practice itself and its possible implications for universal design, and design for all, and to ensure that end-users and others benefit from it until the day it can be replaced with a better option.Item Open Access Examining the translation and scanlation of the manga naruto into Turkish from a translator’s perspective(Lasting Impressions Press, 2017) Okyayuz, A. Ş.The collective power of Japanese popular culture permeating the rest of the world through manga and anime is a recent issue of interest for scholars. Studying the scanlation and translation of the manga, which are multimodal texts that hybridize linguistic and visual arts, also entails several topics of discussion and interest for the translation scholar. There are facets of these multimodal texts as in manga the narrative is conveyed through composite, cinematographic narrative with integrated frames. In turn these can yield interesting translation solutions and strategies, especially when compared in terms of the two mediums of production (i.e., in print and on the Internet). The following study entails a comparative analysis of the scanlation and translation of the manga Naruto into Turkish especially concentrating on: the format (i.e., arrangement of pages, lettering, typography), what was translated what was not (i.e., dialogues, onomatopoeia, honorifics, names), and the use of diverse translation strategies (i.e., adding notes, dealing with discourses, registers and translators choices). In this sense, as is the aim behind the study, manga translations present translation studies with rich grounds of research into multimodal, multicultural dialogue and interaction. As the potential for intercultural dialogue through comics has never been stronger than the present, manga seem to be a medium through which this may be achieved across cultures. Comparative studies in different languages and cultures would not only be a benefit for the comics’ translators and scholars, but also the field of translation, as discussing the abundance of decisions and possibilities would enrich the discipline.Item Open Access From translation to originals … is it just a short step?(Routledge, 2017) Okyayuz, Ş.Even today, many examples of contemporary books for children in Turkey are translations. On the other hand, Turkish authors have been writing books for children for some time now and recently different genres of books have also appeared on the Turkish market. One of these genres is biographies about famous people for primary school students. The scope of this study entails translated biographies about famous people for child readers and current Turkish originals in this genre available today. The central questions are: Are the Turkish versions written in this genre imitations of the translations into Turkish, or are there differences between the translations and originals? What was, in a sense, created through the translation of a genre into a local repertoire? The findings of the study reveal how translations affected the formulation and creation of the genre in Turkish, but also reveal that local literary norms were effective in the appropriation of the genre.Item Open Access An inner journey(Pavilion Publishing and Media Ltd., 2001-04-19) Eken, A. N.Item Open Access Klasikler, Montaigne, Eyüboğlu(Ürün Yayınları, 2008) Arslan, FahrettinAfter the establishment of the Republican regime, Turkey embarked on the process of voluntary Westemization, and the Ministry of Education undertook its intellectual and cultural expansion. The Translation Bureau, established within the Ministry of Education, had the mission of translating into Turkish the classical literary and philosophical works of the West as well as of the Eastem Muslim world. üne of the prominent members of the Bureau and an important fıgure in the domain of culture in that epoch, was the translator of Montaigne's Essays, known in Turkey as Deneme/er, which actually was the translation of only a very small part of the original text. This disproportionality has been vehemently criticized, claiming that it is not compatible with the translation ethics. This article, on the one hand, attempts at revealing, basing.on an article by Ergin Günçe who approaches Denemelerfrom an unusual point of view, the translator's intention, and on the other hand, at situating Denemeler in the perspective of the Turkish humanistic project.
