Item Open Access Effectiveness of particulate nature of matter (PNM)-based intervention studies in improving academic performance: a meta-analysis study(Royal Society of Chemistry, 2023-03-13) Çalık, M.; Ültay, N.; Bağ, H.; Ayas, AlipaşaThrough a meta-analysis, this study examines how effective particulate nature of matter (PNM)-based intervention studies are at improving academic performance. Well-known databases (e.g., ERIC, Springer Link, Taylor & Francis, and ScienceDirect) were used to look for the PNM-based intervention studies via specific keyword patterns. Also, a manual search of related journals and dissertations was conducted to find any missing papers. Subsequently, this meta-analysis included 66 papers (44 dissertations, 21 articles, and one proceeding) published from 1992 to 2022. All statistical data from the papers were initially inserted into an Excel sheet and then imported into comprehensive meta-analysis (CMA) statistics software to calculate Hedges’ g values. The findings indicated that the overall effect-size for the random-effects model was 0.90, which means that the PNM-based intervention studies have a large effect for academic performance. Furthermore, it was revealed that moderator variables, namely educational level and type of intervention, positively affected participants’ PNM-based academic performance (p o 0.05). In light of the findings, it can be concluded that the PNM-based intervention studies are effective at improving the participants’ academic performance. Moreover, given the findings regarding educational level, it can be deduced that K–8 students are able to learn the fundamental features or dimensions of the PNM. Since the meta-analysis includes few extreme values, further research should be undertaken to test the effectiveness of the intervention types on academic performance. Furthermore, the current study excluded a notable number of papers because they lacked sufficient data; therefore, science researchers should take care to include sufficient data or effect-size value for their papers to facilitate dissemination, generalization and comparison of their results.Item Open Access ACM-W: global growth for a local impact(Walter de Gruyter GmbH, 2021-05-19) Tims, J.; Ayfer, ReyyanACM-W is the community within the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) that is dedicated to issues of gender equality in Computer Science. ACM-W works globally to support, celebrate and advocate for the full participation of women in all aspects of the computing field. This article presents a brief history of ACM-W with an emphasis on the global growth of the organization. A summary of the primary programs of ACM-W is provided to further highlight the global impact of our work. Also included are examples of how ACM-W is partnering with other computing and scientific organizations to realize greater impact in the arena of gender equality.Item Open Access OPAC Kullanıcıların bilgi arama stratejilerinin analizi(Hacettepe Üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi Dekanlığı, 2008) Olcay, N. E.; Koçberber, Seyit; Soydal, İ.; Alır, G.İşlem Kütüklerinin izlenmesi yöntemi, son yıllarda kullanıcıların bilgisayar ile olan etkileşimlerini ortaya çıkarmak ve ekran başında sergiledikleri davranışları izleyebilmek için araştırmacılar tarafından başvurulan önemli bir yöntem olmuştur. Kullanıcıların OPAC’ları (Online Public Access Catalog - Herkesçe Erişilebilir Çevrimiçi Kütüphane Katalogları) taramaları esnasında sistem üzerinde gerçekleştirdikleri tıklamalar, sorgularını ifade ediş biçimleri bilgibilimle ilgilenen araştırmacıların dikkatini çekmiştir. Konu ile ilgili araştırmalar genellikle işlem kütüklerinin analizi ile gerçekleştirilmektedir. Çünkü bu veriler, kullanıcıların bilgisayar ile olan etkileşimlerinin objektif olarak izlenmesini sağlamakta ve kullanıcıların bilgi arama davranışları konusunda fikir vermektedir. Bu durum, bilgi hizmetlerinin planlanmasında olduğu kadar arayüz ve bilgi sistemleri tasarımında da son derece önemlidir. Çalışmamızda, üniversite kütüphanesi OPAC kullanıcıları ile ilgili şu sorulara yanıt aranmıştır: Kullanıcılar OPAC’a nereden bağlanmaktadırlar? Kullanıcılar OPAC’larda tarama yaparken ne tür davranışlar sergilemektedirler? Kullanıcılar arayüz sunmuş olduğu seçeneklerden ne kadar faydalanmaktadırlar. Çalışma ayrıca, kullanıcıların arama yaptıkları esnada yönelttikleri sorgu cümlelerini nasıl ve neden değiştirdikleri sorularını da yanıtlamayı amaçlamaktadır. Araştırma verileri Bilkent Üniversitesi web OPAC’ına ait işlem kütüklerinden oluşmaktadır. Verilerin değerlendirilmesine 192.619 satırdan oluşan işlem kütüklerinin analiz edilmesi ile başlanmıştır. Analizler sonucunda OPAC kullanıcılarının yarıdan biraz fazlasının Bilkent Üniversitesi yerleşkesi dışından olduğu, kullanıcıların genelde kendilerine sunulan varsayılan (default) ayarları tercih ettikleri, fazla tıklamalardan katıldıkları, Boole işleçleri ve benzeri yardımcı sorgulama araçlarını kullanmak yerine doğal dille ve “basit tarama” ekranından sorgulama yapmayı tercih ettikleri görülmüştür. Ayrıca, kullanıcıların sorgulama ardından gelen sonuç sayfalarından ilkini incelemeyi genelde yeterli buldukları, bunu yeterli bulmayanların çoğunluğunun da en fazla beşinci sayfaya kadar gittikleri belirlenmiştir. Bu bulguların yanı sıra, veriler bir de oturumlara ayrılmış, her oturumda yöneltilen sorgular ve bunlarda yapılan değişiklikler izlenmiştir. Belirlenen 24.797 farklı oturumun çoğunda (%57) kullanıcıların sisteme birden fazla sorgu yönelterek oturumu sürdürdükleri görülmüştür. Bu durum, sorgu değişiklikleri olarak kabul edilmiş, Özellikle altı ve daha fazla sorgu cümlesinin yöneltildiği oturumlardaki değişiklikler incelenmiştir. Bu oturumlarda kullanıcılar genellikle sorgu sözcüklerini tamamen değiştirerek, aynı oturum içerisinde aradıkları konuyla ilgili farklı yaklaşımlar sergileyerek kaynaklara ulaşmaya çalışmaktadırlar. Elde edilen bu bulgulara göre, OPAC’ların daha kullanıcı dostu bir biçimde hazırlanması gerektiği ortaya çıkmıştır. Ayrıca, kullanıcıların fazla seçenek sunan karmaşık ekranlardan kaçındıkları dikkate alınmalı ve sistem tasarımları bu yaklaşıma uygun olarak yapılmalı ya da yeniden gözden geçirilmelidir. Böylece kolay kullanılabilen sistemler elde edilebilecek, aynı zamanda da bilgi arama araçları ve bilgi kaynaklarından daha etkin bir biçimde yararlanılabilecektir.Item Open Access Need satisfaction as a mediator between classroom goal structures and students' optimal educational experience(Elsevier, 2018) Alp, A.; Michou, Aikaterini; Çorlu, M. S.; Baray, G.Goal-related messages in a classroom are associated with students’ experiences and functioning in learning. However, little is known about need satisfaction as a mediator that translates the classroom messages into students’ optimal educational experience. In the present studies, we investigated in a sample of 171 (in Study 1) and 255 (in Study 2) Turkish undergraduate students (60% females; Mage = 19.79, SD = 1.68 and 45% females, Mage = 19.75, SD = 1.67 respectively), the relation of classroom goal structures to students’ educational satisfaction (or vitality) and state flow through their experience of need satisfaction considering it as the psychological mediator. Path analysis with bootstrap showed that mastery goal structures (i.e., classroom environment focuses on learning and self-improvement) were positively related to need satisfaction while performance goal structures (i.e., classroom environment focuses on normative success) were either negatively related (Study 1) or unrelated (Study 2) to need satisfaction. Path analysis with bootstrap also showed that mastery goal structures were related to vitality, educational satisfaction and flow in class-related tasks through need satisfaction. Understanding need satisfaction as a mediator of classroom goal structures and optimal educational experience help teachers to reconsider their goal-related messages in the classroom.Item Open Access Exploring impact of absent students on scale properties of student ratings of instruction in Turkey(Sciedu Press, 2019) Kalender, IlkerIn the present study comparability or ranking of instructors based on student ratings were investigated under the effect of absenteeism. To this end, invariance of scale properties of student ratings was examined via multigroup confirmatory analysis. Using randomly selected 2098 classes, equality of factorial structure, factor loadings, intercepts and residuals were tested. Results indicated that absent and regularly attending groups have developed the same conceptual meaning for the term instructional effectiveness. Also, ratings in the both groups of classes had a common unit, which makes within-class comparisons of instructors separately for attending and absent groups possible. However instructors who teach classes with absent students systematically receive lower ratings, indicating a bias between the two groups. Student ratings were adjusted against absenteeism to lessen the effect of bias. Results showed significant differences in the rankings of top-rated instructors both before and after the adjustment. Biased ratings pose a serious threat in comparability between instructors who teach absent and attending classes. Thus decisions involving instructors should be supported by other assessment mechanisms.Item Open Access Use of intuitive tools to enhance student learning and user experience(ACM, 2009) Altın, Rukiye; Bektik, Mustafa; Ekşioǧlu, Nuray; Koray, Can; Öner, Ömer Canbek; Sadetaş, Merve; Şener, Hilal; Şimşek, D.; Ma, C. C.; Price, C.; Routh, C. R.Most user interfaces today present system functions by use of verbal or iconic symbols on static 2D menu pages organized in a hierarchical system [1]. This is unnatural to all human beings and must be learned, thus being a barrier between the full use and understanding of computer systems. With this problem in mind we set out to build a website and collaborative application for International Childrens Center (ICC) which could be used not only across languages but across ages as well. This effort was tested on a daily basis by a multinational team consisting of students from the United States and Turkey as well as children from the respective countries. Second, we aim to underline challenges and enablers of such an attempt. For this reason it is widely exploited in Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) applications. It is very critical to determine the number of required clusterheads and thus the overall cost of WSNs while satisfying the desired level of coverage. Our objective is to study cluster size, i.e., how much a clusterhead together with sensors can cover a region when all the devices in a WSN are deployed randomly. Therefore, it is possible to compute the required number of nodes of each type for given network parameters.
