Item Open Access Analysis of residential lighting in Poland: results from a winter term survey(2021-09-01) Pracki, P.; Aslanoğlu, R.; Kazak, J. K.; Ulusoy, B.; Yekanialibeiglou, SepidehIn 2020, an international project on residential lighting started and was implemented in four countries (Poland, Sweden, UK and Turkey). This article presents the results of a survey carried out in Poland, in the winter term between November 2020 and January 2021. A total of 125 Polish residents (59 women, 65 men, one person did not wish to specify gender) participated in the survey. A variety of data was collected on the respondents and their assessments as well as on their satisfaction with day- and artificial lighting in residential living spaces. The results from questionnaires were analyzed with STATISTICA 13.3. Descriptive statistics and Spearman rank order correlations were adopted to identify the light-related aspects, lighting patterns, and respondents’ perception of day- and artificial lighting conditions in living areas. The results revealed that satisfaction with daylighting in the living area, both in summer and winter, was significantly correlated with daylighting level, daylighting uniformity, sunlight exposure and view-out. The results also revealed that satisfaction with artificial lighting was significantly correlated with artificial lighting level, artificial lighting uniformity and color rendering. The results provide valuable information on lighting and factors that influence the luminous environment in residential living spaces.Item Open Access Authorship in video game adaptations(2021-08) Günal, SerenayThe purpose of this thesis is to examine how authorship of video game adaptations is handled as a discursive concept. Auteur theory was created and analyzed as a critical method in the film medium. The thesis researches the adaptability and applicability of this theory into video games and video game adaptations. The findings from the literature review are then compared to a survey of players‘ perceptions and experiences of authorship in video gaming. The survey was conducted in four subtopics to examine player‘s opinions on their preferences in video games, transmedia and adaptation, game creators and creative roles, and lastly, impressions of authorship in video games and adaptations. Another angle on authorship in video game adaptations is the author-driven genre, with a case study of four different Lovecraftian video games; Conarium (2017) and Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth (2005) as direct and Bloodborne (2015) and Darkest Dungeon (2016) as heavily inspired video games inspired by the early 20th-century stories of H. P. Lovecraft. The chapter aims to analyze how literary authorship creates a genre and a brand of its own in video gaming. Lastly, the thesis analyzes transmedia storytelling with a case study of authorship in The Witcher franchise, in which the adapted video games have assumed a more prominent international position than their literary sources.Item Open Access A case study in marketing-manufacturing interface(1995) Eren, DemetThe coordination between the marketing and manufacturing departments plays an important role in the implementation of the corporate strategy. The conflicts and gaps between these two departments impede the successful implementation of corporate strategy. Therefore understanding and managing the marketingmanufacturing interface is critical for the success of the company. This study investigates the gaps and factors affecting these gaps in the marketingmanufacturing interface and developes and uses a survey instrument in a case study.Item Open Access Determinants of the marketing-manufacturing interface(1993) Akıncı, Hikmet BurcuMarketing and manufacturing departments play important roles in day-today implementation of the corporate strategy. The conflicts and interfacial gaps between these two functional departments will impede the successful implementation of corporate strategy. Therefore, understanding and managing the marketing-manufacturing interface are crucial for the company's success. This study investigates the gaps in the interface of marketing and manufacturing, and identifies the factors that affect these gaps within a theoratical framework. Furthermore, a survey instrument is developed to emprically identify the gaps and significant factors that affect these gaps.Item Open Access “Good fences make good neighbors”: territorial dividers ıncrease user satisfaction and efficiency in library study spaces(Elsevier Ltd, 2016) İmamoğlu, Ç.; Gürel, M. Ö.We were consulted to respond to complaints from library users regarding the lack of workspace in a university library hall during busy periods. A behavior mapping study and a survey involving 78 students suggested that the tables in the library hall were used inefficiently, mainly due to a need for territorial markers. Accordingly, we proposed the design and use of new tables that provided dividers (among other improvements), and this design was implemented by the university administration. Follow-up research with 86 students indicated that the design improvements not only led to changes in seating preference trends toward more efficient use of the study hall, but also increased user satisfaction.Item Open Access The historical archaeology of the Early Ottomans : a new perspective on arguments about the foundation of the Ottoman Empire(2015) Dikkaya, FahriThis dissertation aims to evaluate the socio-economic structure of the Early Ottoman Period, and is based on an archaeological approach to reconstructing the early Ottoman state and its foundation. In this context, the settlement patterns of the region between Eskişehir and Bilecik and their reflection on settlement distribution and modification from the Late Byzantine to Early Ottoman Periods will be analyzed and interpreted using archaeological and historical data through the reconstruction of the Early Ottoman landscape in the region. The dissertation first examines archeological evidence relating to the Late Byzantine and Early Ottoman periods, including pottery and architecture. In the second part, it presents the extant evidence for and critical analyses of the relevant historical data dating a period from Mantzikert to Bapheus Battles. Through these evidences, the collected data from archaeological survey in the research area in Eskişehir and Bilecik provinces are analyzed. In this analysis, the data is discussed in the methodology of historical archaeology, especially documentary archaeology based on examining archaeological artifacts and historical texts together. Lastly, this study investigates the settlement patterns of Early Ottoman State in the research area and its reflection of social and cultural phenomenon characterized by the frontier (uç) cultural atmosphere. The research area was the conjunction and interaction area for two main cultural complexes, which were newcomers Turkmens and local Byzantines. The effect of these two cultural complexes to the settlement pattern was based on settlement strategies in the topography and the frontier social and cultural phenomenon in the both societies. In this context, the restricted and problematic topography and the pastoralist system determined the cultural, political and economic landscapes.Item Open Access An international survey on residential lighting: Analysis of winter-term results(Elsevier BV, 2021-12) Aslanoğlu, R.; Kazak, J. K.; Yekanialibeiglou, Sepideh; Pracki, P.; Ulusoy, BegümBy conducting an international survey on residential lighting, a great variety of data showing the differences and similarities in lighting conditions among Poland, Turkey, Sweden and the U.K. were collected which provided an overall perspective for raising the standards of luminous environments. A total of 500 participants (125 respondents from each country- 47.6% females, 51.2% males, and 1.2% who did not wish to specify gender) provided detailed self-assessments of the lighting conditions in their living areas. The study identified interrelated factors associated with residential lighting using descriptive statistics, correlation coefficient functions and thematic analysis. As the survey results showed, the satisfaction with daylighting quality depends on daylighting sufficiency, daylighting uniformity, and number of sunlight hours (i.e., sunlight exposure), view-out and ratio of windows in the living area. Moreover satisfaction with artificial lighting quality depends on artificial lighting sufficiency, artificial lighting uniformity, artificial lighting brightness, and artificial lighting color rendering index. Overall, the findings of the study showed the potential factors that can be used to effectively change the day- and artificial lighting in residential areas, leading to a sustainable and better lighting environment.Item Open Access Network hub location problems: The state of the art(Elsevier, 2008) Alumur, S.; Kara, B. Y.Hubs are special facilities that serve as switching, transshipment and sorting points in many-to-many distribution systems. The hub location problem is concerned with locating hub facilities and allocating demand nodes to hubs in order to route the traffic between origin-destination pairs. We also include some recent trends on hub location and provide a synthesis of the literature.Item Open Access A review of network location theory and models(2004) Erdoğan, Damla SelinIn this study, we review the existing literature on network location problems. The study has a broad scope that includes problems featuring desirable and undesirable facilities, point facilities and extensive facilities, monopolistic and competitive markets, and single or multiple objectives. Deterministic and stochastic models as well as robust models are covered. Demand data aggregation is also discussed. More than 500 papers in this area are reviewed and critical issues, research directions, and problem extensions are emphasized.Item Open Access Short-term analysis of residential lighting: A pilot study(Elsevier BV, 2021-06) Aslanoğlu, R.; Pracki, P.; Kazak, J. K.; Ulusoy, B.; Yekanialibeiglou, SepidehLighting is one of the environmental elements that facilitates people to maintain their lives. With light people can collect visual cues about their environments in which they can perform visual tasks safely and comfortably. Exploring the lighting systems and conditions in residential interiors is important for introducing new concepts concerning human visual comfort. The study aimed to collect data and conduct a short-term analysis about residential lighting which will be a part of a more comprehensive research. The study focused on day- and artificial lighting systems, conditions and people’s assessments in interiors of residential buildings. An internet-based survey was distributed in July-August 2020 through Google Survey across Poland, Turkey, the U.K. and Sweden in the native languages of each country. 29 adult females and 31 adult males voluntarily participated in the present study. The study identified several interconnected factors related to residential lighting and explored them in detail. Large percentage of the respondents were satisfied or very satisfied with daylighting quality in summer (86.7%) and artificial lighting quality (78.4%) in their living areas. The amount and uniformity of lighting were the most effective cues connected with the respondents’ satisfaction. Reasonable and promising outcomes that were found can be used in generating new and comprehensive data about lighting quality in residential buildings.Item Open Access The state of the art in mobile graphics research(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2008) Capin, T.; Pulli, K.; Akenine-Möller, T.High-quality computer graphics let mobile-device users access more compelling content.
