Item Open Access The 1912 Galata Bridge as a site of collective memory(Bilkent University, 2002) Şumnu, UmutThis work looks at the 1912 Galata Bridge as a case study and attempts to examine it as a dual construction in two senses: space and memory. Acknowledging that space and memory mutually construct each other, this thesis explains each term in general but also elucidates the relationship between perception and remembrance of space by reading the materiality of the 1912 Galata Bridge. In that respect, changing meanings attributed to space over time are analysed lead us to recognise two different ways of conceiving space named as 'spaceness' and 'placeness'. This dual existence is conductive to raising questions about perception of the 1912 Galata Bridge in two layers. Taken separately, its function of conveyance and the property of inhabitation lead us to read 'spaceness' and 'placeness' that also correspond to two ways of remembering it. Its 'spaceness' is perceived by the gaze and remembered through looking at its images, its 'placeness, on the other hand, is experienced by the body and recollected through reading texts that describe the actual engagement. Hence, 'spaceness' and 'placeness', gaze and body, image and text are correspondingly related with each other by the agency of the 1912 Galata Bridge as situated in collective memory. Item Open Access Construction of gender and national identity in Turkey: images of the first lady in the Turkish media (2002-7)(Routledge, 2014) Cinar, M. U.This article analyses the conception of womanhood and nationhood in Turkey through images of the First Lady in the media. It demonstrates that while there is a struggle between the secularist and Islamist media on issues such as Turkish national identity and public visibility, the secularist and Islamist discourses overlap when it comes to gender roles. In both cases, the private sphere is designated as the primary domain of women and the agency of women in the public sphere is limited by the symbolic duties they are expected to perform in accordance with the national imaginary. © 2014 Taylor & Francis.Item Open Access An exploration of Turkish identity and comparison with the image of Turkey(Bilkent University, 1996) Bozdag, İpekImage of a product plays an important role in purchase decision. This image concept consists of the design, the performance and other attributes of the product as well as its brand name, name of its producer and its country's image. If a nation has a particular self-construction, it will interact with others according to this construction. Therefore, if the nation reflects its constructed self while interacting with others, image of that country according to foreigners will be affected by the national identity. In this study, the identity of Turks, based on the thoughts of Turkish businesspeople and students is explored. The explored identity is compared with the Westerns' percieved image of Turkey. Depending on·· the analysis and comparisons, it is found out that, the foreigner's image of Turkey really reflects their identity and it seems that Turkey's national identity has an effect on the foreigner's image of Turkey. As a result, by considering both the image and identity of Turkey, some recommendations are made to improve the negative image .of Turkey and to occupy a distinct and valued place in the target consumer's mind.Item Open Access The intertextual circulation: image travelling in consumer culture(Bilkent University, 1993) Cindoruk, Ali V.The aim of the present study is to examine certain characteristics of image travelling in consumer culture through various means and forms of media. While images were cherished, words were set apart from images. This thesis attempts to look at the relationship between images and words through seeking their connection to perception and body. It investigates how image-word dichotomy occurred and how this dichotomy obscured the connection between writing and body. The thesis also examines different approaches to overcome this phenomenon in the context of Modern Art. By examining my artwork within this framework, it argues that it is possible to embody the inseparable relationship between images and words through reconnecting with the body’s primordial existence.Item Open Access The simulacrum surfaced : a study on the nature of the image(Bilkent University, 2004) Erlevent, EvrenThis study aims at understanding the nature of the visual image through discussing the notion of 'simulacrum' within the philosophy of Plato, Baudrillard and Deleuze and trying to locate its importance within the representational system of models and copies. The notion of imitation and representation is found problematic in explaining the fascination within visual imagery and Deleuze’s term ‘becoming’ is suggested as more appropriate. It is discussed in this thesis how the simulacrum threatens and destabilizes model/copy relations of representation through its role in Deleuze’s ‘sensation.’Item Open Access The standing of the narrator in the poems of Pir Sultan Abdal(2008) Günaydin, A.U.The poems of Pir Sultan Abdal can be characterized as the spokesman for a dissident appraisal reflecting the periphery's feelings of rebellion and revenge, and thus, in this same context, as the collective products of tradition The narrator who speaks out of this appraisal, while standing in opposition to the established order, does this with an expression that pursues civil rights, rebels, and signals resistance. Therefore, despite their occasional display of lyrical features, the poems of Pir Sultan are, generally speaking, poems with a story to tell and a message to convey. These poems, which are the products of collective consciousness, present an enriching material in terms of plot and characters, as they rely on story telling. This article will, taking the narrator into consideration, look into the kind of conflict included in the poems, and thus into the ways in which the feelings of reprisal and rebellion are given utterance, through the narrator identity of Pir Sultan speaking from inside this collective appraisal. It will also examine how the characters are positioned and what kinds of images are picked in order to create this atmosphere. In this context, the emphasis will be on the kind of social environment projected by the narrator and on the kind of appraisal he speaks out of.Item Open Access Tale within the Tale, Tale within the Fantastic(2005) Yildirim, T.In this study, the figure of shahmaran (a half-snake, half-human hybrid) and the adventures of related characters in Zülfü Livaneli's film entitled Şahmaran: Bir İstanbul Masali (Shahmaran: An İstanbul Tale) (1993) are compared with those that are found in "The Story of Hasib Kerimeddin and the Shahmaran" from The Book of One Thousand and One Nights.
