HPhP provides blue emission with a peak wavelength at 445 nm. The layer of TCz1 acts as an electron-transporting layer. In the framework of density functional theory (DFT) approach the geometry configuration and energy levels of HPhP are found being in a good agreement with spectral and cyclic voltammogram data.Item Open Access Blue-emitting CdSe nanoplatelets enabled by sulfur-alloyed heterostructures for light-emitting diodes with low turn-on voltage(American Chemical Society, 2021-12-28) İzmir, M.; Sharma, A.; Shendre, S.; Durmuşoğlu, E. G.; Sharma, V. K.; Shabani, Farzan; Baruj, Hamed Dehghanpour; Delikanlı, Savaş; Sharma, M.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanColloidal nanoplatelets (NPLs) have emerged as the last class of semiconductor nanocrystals for their potential optoelectronic applications. The heterostructures of these nanocrystals can achieve high photoluminescence quantum yield and enhanced photostability, along with color purity. Such advantages make them a promising candidate for solution-processable light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, to date, blue-emitting CdSe nanoplatelets (NPLs) exhibit poor photoluminescence quantum yield and also typically suffer from a rolled-up morphology. To mitigate these problems in this work, we propose and demonstrate efficient alloyed 4 ML CdSe1–xSx nanoplatelets having a CdS crown with enhanced photoluminescence quantum yields (up to 60%) in the blue region (462–487 nm). We successfully used these NPLs as an electrically driven active emitter in the blue-emitting NPL-LEDs with a low turn-on voltage of ∼4 V. The Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.23, 0.14) were obtained for these blue-emitting NPL-LEDs. These emitters could potentially open up the opportunity for full-color displays using these NPL-based blue LEDs in conjunction with the red and green ones.Item Open Access Colloidal quantum dot light-emitting diodes employing phosphorescent small organic molecules as efficient exciton harvesters(American Chemical Society, 2014) Mutlugun, E.; Guzelturk, B.; Abiyasa, A. P.; Gao, Y.; Sun X. W.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanNonradiative energy transfer (NRET) is an alternative excitation mechanism in colloidal quantum dot (QD) based electroluminescent devices (QLEDs). Here, we develop hybrid highly spectrally pure QLEDs that facilitate energy transfer pumping via NRET from a phosphorescent small organic molecule-codoped charge transport layer to the adjacent QDs. A partially codoped exciton funnelling electron transport layer is proposed and optimized for enhanced QLED performance while exhibiting very high color purity of 99%. These energy transfer pumped hybrid QLEDs demonstrate a 6-fold enhancement factor in the external quantum efficiency over the conventional QLED structure, in which energy transfer pumping is intrinsically weak.Item Open Access Comparative study of field-dependent carrier dynamics and emission kinetics of InGaN/GaN light-emitting diodes grown on (11 2-2) semipolar versus (0001) polar planes(AIP Publishing, 2014) Ji Y.; Liu W.; Erdem, T.; Chen R.; Tan S.T.; Zhang Z.-H.; Ju, Z.; Zhang X.; Sun, H.; Sun, X. W.; Zhao Y.; DenBaars, S. P.; Nakamura, S.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanThe characteristics of electroluminescence (EL) and photoluminescence (PL) emission from GaN light-emitting diodes (LEDs) grown on (11 (2) over bar2) semipolar plane and (0001) polar plane have been comparatively investigated. Through different bias-dependent shifting trends observed from the PL and time-resolved PL spectra (TRPL) for the two types of LEDs, the carrier dynamics within the multiple quantum wells (MQWs) region is systematically analyzed and the distinct field-dependent emission kinetics are revealed. Moreover, the polarization induced internal electric field has been deduced for each of the LEDs. The relatively stable emission behavior observed in the semipolar LED is attributed to the smaller polarization induced internal electric field. The study provides meaningful insight for the design of quantum well (QW) structures with high radiative recombination rates.Item Open Access Electroluminescence efficiency enhancement in quantum dot light-emitting diodes by embedding a silver nanoisland layer(Wiley-VCH Verlag, 2015) Yang, X.; Hernandez-Martinez, P. L.; Dang C.; Mutlugün, E.; Zhang, K.; Demir, Hilmi Volkan; Sun X. W.A colloidal quantum dot light-emitting diode (QLED) is reported with substantially enhanced electroluminescence by embedding a thin layer of Ag nanoislands into hole transport layer. The maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.1% achieved in the present work is the highest efficiency value reported for green-emitting QLEDs with a similar structure, which corresponds to 46% enhancement compared with the reference device. The relevant mechanisms enabling the EQE enhancement are associated with the near-field enhancement via an effective coupling between excitons of the quantum dot emitters and localized surface plasmons around Ag nano-islands, which are found to lead to good agreement between the simulation results and the experimental data, providing us with a useful insight important for plasmonic QLEDs. © 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. K.; Dang C.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanColloidal quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) are lucrative options for color-pure lighting sources. To achieve high-performance QLEDs, besides developing high-efficiency quantum dots (QDs), it is essential to understand their device physics. However, little understanding of the QD emission behavior in active QLEDs is one of the main factors hindering the improvement of device efficiency. In this work, we systematically studied the exciton dynamics of gradient composition CdSe@ZnS QDs during electroluminescence in a working QLED. With time-resolved photoluminescence analyses using fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy we analyzed a large population of QDs spatially spreading over an extended area inside and outside the device. This allows us to reveal the statistically significant changes in the behavior of QD emission in the device at different levels of applied voltages and injection currents. We find that the QD emission efficiency first drops in device fabrication with Al electrode deposition and that the QD exciton lifetime is then statistically reduced further under the QLED's working conditions. This implies the nonradiative Auger recombination process is active in charged QDs as a result of imbalanced charge injection in a working QLED. Our results help to understand the exciton behavior during the operation of a QLED and demonstrate a new approach to explore the exciton dynamics statistically with a large QD population.Item Open Access High-efficiency light-emitting diodes of organometal halide perovskite amorphous nanoparticles(American Chemical Society, 2016) Xing, J.; Yan, F.; Zhao Y.; Chen, S.; Yu, H.; Zhang, Q.; Zeng, R.; Demir, Hilmi Volkan; Sun, X.; Huan, A.; Xiong, Q.Organometal halide perovskite has recently emerged as a very promising family of materials with augmented performance in electronic and optoelectronic applications including photovoltaic devices, photodetectors, and light-emitting diodes. Herein, we propose and demonstrate facile solution synthesis of a series of colloidal organometal halide perovskite CH3NH3PbX3 (X = halides) nanoparticles with amorphous structure, which exhibit high quantum yield and tunable emission from ultraviolet to near-infrared. The growth mechanism and photoluminescence properties of the perovskite amorphous nanoparticles were studied in detail. A high-efficiency green-light-emitting diode based on amorphous CH3NH3PbBr3 nanoparticles was demonstrated. The perovskite amorphous nanoparticle-based light-emitting diode shows a maximum luminous efficiency of 11.49 cd/A, a power efficiency of 7.84 lm/W, and an external quantum efficiency of 3.8%, which is 3.5 times higher than that of the best colloidal perovskite quantum-dot-based light-emitting diodes previously reported. Our findings indicate the great potential of colloidal perovskite amorphous nanoparticles in light-emitting devices. © 2016 American Chemical Society.Item Open Access Highly flexible, electrically driven, top-emitting, quantum dot light-emitting stickers(American Chemical Society, 2014) Yang X.; Mutlugun, E.; Dang, C.; Dev, K.; Gao, Y.; Tan, S.T.; Sun X.W.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanFlexible information displays are key elements in future optoelectronic devices. Quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) with advantages in color quality, stability, and cost-effectiveness are emerging as a candidate for single-material, full color light sources. Despite the recent advances in QLED technology, making high-performance flexible QLEDs still remains a big challenge due to limited choices of proper materials and device architectures as well as poor mechanical stability. Here, we show highly efficient, large-area QLED tapes emitting in red, green, and blue (RGB) colors with top-emitting design and polyimide tapes as flexible substrates. The brightness and quantum efficiency are 20 000 cd/m2 and 4.03%, respectively, the highest values reported for flexible QLEDs. Besides the excellent electroluminescence performance, these QLED films are highly flexible and mechanically robust to use as electrically driven light-emitting stickers by placing on or removing from any curved surface, facilitating versatile LED applications. Our QLED tapes present a step toward practical quantum dot based platforms for high-performance flexible displays and solid-state lighting. © 2014 American Chemical Society.Item Open Access Highly flexible, full-color, top-emitting quantum dot light-emitting diode tapes(IEEE, 2013) Yang X.; Mutlugün, Evren; Gao, Y.; Zhao, Y.; Tan, S.T.; Sun X.W.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanWe report flexible tapes of high-performance, top-emitting, quantum dot based, light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) with multicolor emission, actively working even when flexed. W.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanA colloidal quantum dot light-emitting diode (QLED) is reported with substantially enhanced light extraction efficiency by applying a layer of large-scale, low-cost, periodic nanopillar arrays. Zinc oxide nanopillars are grown on the glass surface of the substrate using a simple, efficient method of non-wetting templates. With the layer of ZnO nanopillar array as an optical outcoupling medium, a record high current efficiency (CE) of 26.6 cd/A is achieved for QLEDs. Consequently, the corresponding external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 9.34% reaches the highest EQE value for green-emitting QLEDs. Also, the underlying physical mechanisms enabling the enhanced light-extraction are investigated, which leads to an excellent agreement of the numerical results based on the mode theory with the experimental measurements. This study is the first account for QLEDs offering detailed insight into the light extraction efficiency enhancement of QLED devices. The method demonstrated here is intended to be useful not only for opening up a ubiquitous strategy for designing high-performance QLEDs but also with respect to fundamental research on the light extraction in QLEDs.Item Open Access Liquid-liquid diffusion ‐ assisted crystallization: a fast and versatile approach toward high quality mixed quantum dot ‐ salt crystals(Wiley-VCH Verlag, 2015) Adam, M.; Wang, Z.; Dubavik, A.; Stachowski, G. M.; Meerbach, C.; Soran-Erdem, Z.; Rengers, C.; Demir, Hilmi Volkan; Gaponik N.; Eychmuller, A.Here, a new, fast, and versatile method for the incorporation of colloidal quantum dots (QDs) into ionic matrices enabled by liquid-liquid diffusion is demonstrated. QDs bear a huge potential for numerous applications thanks to their unique chemical and physical properties. However, stability and processability are essential for their successful use in these applications. Incorporating QDs into a tight and chemically robust ionic matrix is one possible approach to increase both their stability and processability. With the proposed liquid-liquid diffusion-assisted crystallization (LLDC), substantially accelerated ionic crystallization of the QDs is shown, reducing the crystallization time needed by one order of magnitude. This fast process allows to incorporate even the less stable colloids including initially oil-based ligand-exchanged QDs into salt matrices. Furthermore, in a modified two-step approach, the seed-mediated LLDC provides the ability to incorporate oil-based QDs directly into ionic matrices without a prior phase transfer. Finally, making use of their processability, a proof-of-concept white light emitting diode with LLDC-based mixed QD-salt films as an excellent color-conversion layer is demonstrated. These findings suggest that the LLDC offers a robust, adaptable, and rapid technique for obtaining high quality QD-salts.Item Open Access Nanowire-shaped MoS2@MoO3 nanocomposites as a hole injection layer for quantum dot light-emitting diodes(American Chemical Society, 2022-08-23) Bastami, N.; Soheyli, E.; Arslan, A.; Sahrae, R.; Yazici, A. F.; Mutlugun, EvrenMolybdenum disulfides and molybdenum trioxides are structures that possess the potential to work as efficient charge transport layers in optoelectronic devices. In the present study, as opposed to the existing Mo-based nanostructures in flake, sheet, or spherical forms, an extremely simple and low-cost hydrothermal method is used to prepare nanowires (NWs) of MoS2@MoO3 (MSO) composites. The synthesis method includes several advantages including easy handling and processing of inexpensive precursors to reach stable MSO NWs without the need for an oxygen-free medium, which would facilitate the possibility of mass production of these nanostructures. The structural analysis confirmed the formation of MSO nanocomposites with different Mo valence states, as well as NWs of average length and diameter of 70 nm and 5 nm, respectively. In order to demonstrate their potential for optoelectronic applications, MSO NWs were blended into hole injection layers (HILs) in quantum dot-based light-emitting diodes (QLEDs). Electroluminescence measurements show a substantial enhancement in both luminance (from 44,330 to 68,630 cd.m–2) and external quantum efficiency (from 1.6 to 2.3%), based on the increase in the ratio of MSO NWs from 3 to 10%. Interestingly, the addition of 10% volume of MSO NWs resulted in a remarkably smoother HIL with improved current efficiency and stability in green-emitting QLEDs. The simplicity and cost-effective features of the synthesis method along with outstanding favorable morphology demonstrated their ability to enhance the QLED performance and mark them as promising agents for optoelectronics.Item Open Access Quantum dot light-emitting diode with quantum dots inside the hole transporting layers(American Chemical Society, 2013) Leck K.S.; Divayana, Y.; Zhao, D.; Young, X.; Abiyasa, A. P.; Mutlugun, E.; Gao, Y.; Liu, S.; Tan S.T.; Sun, X. W.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanWe report a hybrid, quantum dot (QD)-based, organic light-emitting diode architecture using a noninverted structure with the QDs sandwiched between hole transporting layers (HTLs) outperforming the reference device structure implemented in conventional noninverted architecture by over five folds and suppressing the blue emission that is otherwise observed in the conventional structure because of the excess electrons leaking towards the HTL. It is predicted in the new device structure that 97.44% of the exciton formation takes place in the QD layer, while 2.56% of the excitons form in the HTL. It is found that the enhancement in the external quantum efficiency is mainly due to the stronger confinement of exciton formation to the QDs.Item Open Access Room-temperature larger-scale highly ordered nanorod imprints of ZnO film(Optical Society of American (OSA), 2013) Kyaw, Z.; Wang J.; Dev, K.; Tiam Tan, S.; Ju, Z.; Zhang, Z.-H.; Ji, Y.; Hasanov, N.; Liu W.; Sun X.W.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanRoom-temperature large-scale highly ordered nanorod-patterned ZnO films directly integrated on III-nitride light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are proposed and demonstrated via low-cost modified nanoimprinting, avoiding a high-temperature process. with a 600 nm pitch on top of a critical 200 nm thick Imprinting ZnO nanorods of 200 nm in diameter and 200 nm in height continuous ZnO wetting layer, the light output power of the resulting integrated ZnO-nanorod-film/semi- transparent metal/GaN/InGaN LED shows a two-fold enhancement (100% light extraction efficiency improvement) at the injection current of 150 mA, in comparison with the conventional LED without the imprint film. The increased optical output is well explained by the enhanced light scattering and outcoupling of the ZnOrod structures along with the wetting film, as verified by the numerical simulations. The wetting layer is found to be essential for better impedance matching. The current-voltage characteristics and electroluminescence measurements confirm that there is no noticeable change in the electrical or spectral properties of the final LEDs after ZnO-nanorod film integration. These results suggest that the low-cost high-quality large-scale ZnOnanorod imprints hold great promise for superior LED light extraction. ©2013 Optical Society of America.Item Embargo Spectrally tunable white light-emitting diodes based on carbon quantum dot-doped poly(N-vinylcarbazole) composites(American Chemical Society, 2024-01-26) Sahin Tiras, Kevser; Biçer, Aysenur; Soheyli, Ehsan; Mutlugün, EvrenElectroluminescent white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are always of great interest for emerging display applications. Carbon-based quantum dots (CQDs) are the newest emerging nanoscale materials that can be employed for this purpose, owing to their broad and bright light emission properties. In the present work, highly luminescent CQDs with an emission quantum yield of 60% were prepared via a colloidal solvothermal method and subsequent silica gel column chromatography. The photoluminescence (PL) peak was located at 550 nm possessing yellow emission, with a full width at half-maximum of 98 nm and a relatively long lifetime of 10.23 ns through a single-exponential recombination pathway. CQDs were employed in an electroluminescent device architecture of an ITO/PEDOT:PSS/TFB/CQD:PVK/TPBi/LiF/Al structure and blended with poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) to evaluate their ability to reach white electroluminescent emission. Results confirmed a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 0.76% and a maximum luminescence of 774.3 cd·m-2. Tuning the ratio between CQDs and PVK from 1:10.25 to 1:5.75 resulted in a systematic shift in CIE x-y coordinates from 0.23-0.26 to 0.21-0.24, located close to the cool white region. The results of the present study can be considered a step forward in fabricating efficient WLEDs based on low-cost CQDs.Item Open Access White emitting polyfluorene functionalized with azide hybridized on near-UV light emitting diode for high color rendering index(Optical Society of America, 2008) Huyal, I. O.; Ozel, T.; Koldemir, U.; Nizamoglu, S.; Tuncel, D.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanWe develop and demonstrate high-quality white light generation that relies on the use of a single-type simple conjugated polymer of polyfluorene functionalized with azide groups (PFA) integrated on a near-UV LED platform. The high-quality white emission from the polyfluorene is achieved by using the azide functionalization to facilitate cross-linking intentionally when cast into solid-state form. Hybridized on n-UV InGaN/GaN LED at 378 nm, the PFA emitters collectively generate a very broad down-converting photoluminescence at longer wavelengths across the entirety of the visible spectrum, yielding high color rendering indices up to 91.
