Item Open Access Adaptive human pilot model for uncertain systems(IEEE, 2019-06) Tohidi, Shahab; Yıldız, YıldırayInspired by humans' ability to adapt to changing environments, this paper proposes an adaptive human model that mimics the crossover model despite input bandwidth deviations and plant uncertainties. The proposed human pilot model structure is based on the model reference adaptive control, and the adaptive laws are obtained using the Lyapunov-Krasovskii stability criteria applied to the overall closed loop system including the human pilot and the plant. The proposed model can be employed for human-in-the-Ioop stability and performance analyses with different controllers and plant types. A numerical example is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented method.Item Open Access Adaptive robust sampled-data control of a class of systems under structured perturbations(IEEE, 1993) Yu, R.; Ocali, O; Sezer, E. S.Robust adaptive sampled-data control of a class of linear systems under structured perturbations is considered. The controller is a time-varying state-feedback law having a fixed structure, containing an adjustable parameter, and operating on sampled values. The sampling period and the controller parameter are adjusted with simple adaption rules. The resulting closed-loop system is shown to be stable for a class of unknown perturbations. The same result is also shown to be applicable to decentralized control of interconnected systems.Item Open Access Associative memory design using overlapping decompositions(Pergamon Press, 2001) Akar, M.; Sezer, M. E.This paper discusses the use of decomposition techniques in the design of associative memories via artificial neural networks. In particular, a disjoint decomposition which allows an independent design of lower-dimensional subnetworks and an overlapping decomposition which allows subnetworks to share common parts, are analyzed. It is shown by a simple example that overlapping decompositions may help in certain cases where design by disjoint decompositions fails. With this motivation, an algorithm is provided to synthesize neural networks using the concept of overlapping decompositions. Applications of the proposed design procedure to a benchmark example from the literature and to a pattern recognition problem indicate that it may improve the effectiveness of the existing methods.Item Open Access Decentralized blocking zeros and the decentralized strong stabilization problem(IEEE, 1995) Ünyelioğlu, K. B.; Özgüner, Ü.This paper is concerned with a new system theoretic concept, decentralized blocking zeros, and its applications in the design of decentralized controllers for linear time-invariant finite-dimensional systems. The concept of decentralized blocking zeros is a generalization of its centralized counterpart to multichannel systems under decentralized control. Decentralized blocking zeros are defined as the common blocking zeros of the main diagonal transfer matrices and various complementary transfer matrices of a given plant. As an application of this concept, we consider the decentralized strong stabilization problem (DSSP) where the objective is to stabilize a plant using a stable decentralized controller. It is shown that a parity interlacing property should be satisfied among the real unstable poles and real unstable decentralized blocking zeros of the plant for the DSSP to be solvable. That parity interlacing property is also sufficient for the solution of the DSSP for a large class of plants satisfying a certain connectivity condition. The DSSP is exploited in the solution of a special decentralized simultaneous stabilization problem, called the decentralized concurrent stabilization problem (DCSP). Various applications of the DCSP in the design of controllers for large-scale systems are also discussed.Item Open Access Decentralized stabilization: characterization of all solutions and genericity aspects(Taylor & Francis, 1992) Ünyelioğlu, Konur Alp; Özgüler, Arif BülentElectrical and The decentralized stabilization problem of multivariable finite-dimensional systems is considered in a fractional set-up. A new synthesis procedure for decentralized stabilizing compensators is proposed. The class of all admissible local compensators that can be applied to a specified channel as an element of a decentralized compensator is identified. The conditions under which the class of admissible local compensators is generic are investigated. The problem of making a multi-channel system stabilizable and detectable from a single channel applying decentralized feedback around the other channels has been shown to be generically solvable for a given set of dynamic compensators if and only if the plant is strongly connected.Item Open Access Decentralized strong stabilization problem(IEEE, 1992-06) Özgüler, A. For a given plant and a stabilizing controller, the LQ optimal repetitive control system can be obtained by the addition of a plug-in unit to the existing control system. Modeling has been done via processing of numerical observations through singular value decomposition with Galerkin projection. This results in a set of spatial basis functions together with a set of Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) describing the temporal evolution. Since the dynamics described by Burgers equation is nonlinear, the corresponding reduced order dynamics turn out to be nonlinear. The presented analysis explains how boundary condition appears as a control input in the ODEs. The controller design is based on the linearization of the dynamic model. It has been demonstrated that an integral controller, whose gain is a function of the spatial variable, is sufficient to observe reasonably high tracking performance with a high degree of robustness.Item Open Access Low dimensional modelling and Dirichlét boundary controller design for Burgers equation(Taylor & Francis, 2004) Efe, M. The issues of control system synthesis are discussed from the point of practicality, performance and robustness. The numerical results obtained are in good compliance with the theoretical claims. We consider both continuous and discrete time cases. We first assume that the systems to be controlled are linear and time invariant. Under controllability assumption, we transform these systems into some canonical forms. We assume the existence of chaotic systems which has similar forms. Ö.; Özbay, HitayModeling issues of infinite dimensional systems is studied in this paper. Although the modeling problem has been solved to some extent, use of decomposition techniques still pose several difficulties. A prime one of this is the amount of data to be processed. Method of snapshots integrated with POD is a remedy. The second difficulty is the fact that the decomposition followed by a projection yields an autonomous set of finite dimensional ODEs that is not useful for developing a concise understanding of the input operator of the system. A numerical approach to handle this issue is presented in this paper. As the example, we study 2D heat flow problem. The results obtained confirm the theoretical claims of the paper and emphasize that the technique presented here is not only applicable to infinite dimensional linear systems but also to nonlinear ones.Item Open Access Robust LQ control for harmonic reference/disturbance signals(IEEE, 2000) Köroğlu, Hakan; Morgül, ÖmerLinear Quadratic (LQ) controller design is considered for continuous-time systems with harmonic signals of known frequencies and it is shown that the design is reducible to an interpolation problem. All LQ optimal loops are parametrized by a particular solution of this interpolation problem and a (free) stable/proper transfer function. The appropriate choice of this free parameter for optimal stability robustness is formulated as a multiobjective design problem and reduced to a Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem with some interpolation points on the boundary of the stability domain. Using a related result from the literature, it is finally shown that, if there is sufficient penalization on the power of the control input, the level of optimum stability robustness achievable with LQ optimal controllers is the same as the level of optimum stability robustness achievable by arbitrary stabilizing controllers.Item Open Access A unification and comparison of the methods of construction for decentralized stabilizing controllers(1993) Koçan, Ali AydınIn this thesis, the construction and characterization methods that use stable proper fractional representation for the solution of decentralized stabilization problem is presented in a unified manner. Four methods of construction are given starting with a right coprime fractional representation of the plant over the ring of stable transfer functions. One of these methods is a new construction procedure that exploits the Smith-McMillan canonical form. Connections between some of the characterization methods are explicitly shown.Item Open Access A variable structure control approach to active queue management for TCP with ECN(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2005) Yan, P.; Gao, Y.; Özbay, HitayIt has been shown that the transmission control protocol (TCP) connections through the congested routers can be modeled as a feedback dynamic system. In this paper we design a variable structure (VS) based control scheme in active queue management (AQM) supporting explicit congestion notification (ECN). By analyzing the robustness and performance of the control scheme for the nonlinear TCP/AQM model, we show that the proposed design has good performance and robustness with respect to the uncertainties of the round-trip time (RTT) and the number of active TCP sessions, which are central to the notion of AQM. Implementation issues are discussed and ns simulations are provided to validate the design and compare its performance to other peer schemes' in different scenarios. The results show that the proposed design significantly outperforms the peer AQM schemes in terms of packet loss ratio, throughput and buffer fluctuation.
