Item Open Access Experimental demonstration of sub-wavelength imaging by left handed metamaterials(SPIE, 2007) Özbay, EkmelWe review the studies conducted in our group concerning electromagnetic properties of metamaterials and photonic crystals with negative effective index of refraction. In particular, we demonstate the true left handed behavior of a 2D composite metamaterial, by analyzing the electric and magnetic response of the material components systematically. The negative refraction, subwavelength focusing, and flat lens phenomena using left handed metamaterials and photonic crystals are also presented.Item Open Access Förster-type nonradiative energy transfer for assemblies of arrayed nanostructures: confinement dimension vs stacking dimension(American Chemical Society, 2014-02-11) Hernandez-Martinez, P. L.; Govorov, A. O.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanForster-type nonradiative energy transfer (NRET) provides us with the ability to transfer excitation energy between proximal nanostructures with high efficiency under certain conditions. Nevertheless, the well-known Forster theory was developed for the case of a single donor (e.g., a molecule, a dye) together with single acceptor. There is no complete understanding for the cases when the donors and the acceptors are assembled in nanostructure arrays, though there are special cases previously studied. Thus, a comprehensive theory that models Forster-type NRET for assembled nanostructure arrays is required. Here, we report a theoretical framework of generalized theory for the Forster-type NRET with mixed dimensionality in arrays. These include combinations of arrayed nanostructures made of nanoparticles (NPs) and nanowires (NWs) assemblies in one-dimension (1D), two-dimension (2D), and three-dimension (3D) completing the framework for the transfer rates in all possible combinations of different confinement geometries and assembly architectures, we obtain a unified picture of NRET in assembled nanostructures arrays. We find that the generic NRET distance dependence is modified by arraying the nanostructures. For an acceptor NP the rate distance dependence changes from gamma alpha d(-6) to gamma alpha d(-5) when they are arranged in a ID stack, and to gamma alpha d(-4) when in a 2D array, and to gamma alpha d(-3) when in a 3D array. Likewise, an acceptor NW changes its distance dependence from gamma alpha d(-5) to gamma alpha d(-4) when they are arranged in a 1D array and to gamma alpha d(-3) when in a 2D array. These finding shows that the numbers of dimensions across which nanostructures are stacked is equally critical as the confinement dimension of the nanostructure in determining the NRET kinetics.Item Open Access High-performance solar-blind AlGaN Schottky photodiodes(Materials Research Society, 2003) Bıyıklı, Necmi; Kartaloglu, T.; Aytur, O.; Kimukin, I.; Özbay, EkmelHigh-performance solar-blind AlGaN-based Schottky photodiodes have been demonstrated. The detectors were fabricated on MOCVD-grown AlGaN/GaN heterostructures using a microwave-compatible fabrication process. Current-voltage, spectral responsivity, noise, and high-speed characteristics of the detectors were measured and analyzed. Dark currents lower than 1 pA at bias voltages as high as 30 V were obtained. True solar-blind detection was achieved with a cut-off wavelength lower than 266 nm. A peak device responsivity of 78 mA/W at 250 nm was measured under 15 V reverse bias. A visible rejection of more than 4 orders of magnitude was observed. The solar-blind photodiodes exhibited noise densities below the measurement setup noise floor of 3×10 -29 A 2/Hz around 10 KHz. High-speed measurements at the solar-blind wavelength of 267 nm resulted in 3-dB bandwidths as high as 870 MHz.Item Open Access High-Speed InSb photodetectors on GaAs for mid-IR applications(IEEE, 2004) Kimukin, I.; Bıyıklı, Necmi; Kartaloǧlu, T.; Aytür, O.; Özbay, EkmelWe report p-i-n type InSb-based high-speed photodetectors grown on GaAs substrate. Electrical and optical properties of photodetectors with active areas ranging from 7.06 × 10 -6 cm 2 to 2.25 × 10 -4 cm 2 measured at 77 K and room temperature. Detectors had high zero-bias differential resistances, and the differential resistance area product was 4.5 Ω cm 2. At 77 K, spectral measurements yielded high responsivity between 3 and 5 μm with the cutoff wavelength of 5.33 μm. The maximum responsivity tor 80-μm diameter detectors was 1.00 × 10 5 V/W at 435 μm while the detectivity was 3.41×10 9 cm Hz 1/2/W. High-speed measurements were done at room temperature. An optical parametric oscillator was used to generate picosecond full-width at half-maximum pulses at 2.5 μm with the pump at 780 mm. 30-μm diameter photodetectors yielded 3-dB bandwidth of 8.5 GHz at 2.5 V bias.Item Open Access High-speed visible-blind resonant cavity enhanced AlGaN Schottky photodiodes(Materials Research Society, 2003) Bıyıklı, Necmi; Kartaloglu, T.; Aytur, O.; Kimukin, I.; Özbay, EkmelWe have designed, fabricated and tested resonant cavity enhanced visible-blind AlGaN-based Schottky photodiodes. The bottom mirror of the resonant cavity was formed with a 20 pair AlN/Al 0.2Ga 0.8N Bragg mirror. The devices were fabricated using a microwave compatible fabrication process. Au and indium-tin-oxide (ITO) thin films were used for Schottky contact formation. ITO and Au-Schottky devices exhibited resonant peaks with 0.153 A/W and 0.046 A/W responsivity values at 337 nm and 350 nm respectively. Temporal high-speed measurements at 357 nm resulted in fast pulse responses with pulse widths as short as 77 ps. The fastest UV detector had a 3-dB bandwidth of 780 MHz.Item Open Access Phase-matched self-doubling optical parametric oscillator(Optical Society of America, 1997-03-01) Kartaloğlu, T.; Köprülü, K. G.; Aytür, O.We report a synchronously pumped intracavity frequency-doubled optical parametric oscillator that employs a single KTiOPO4 crystal for both parametric generation and frequency doubling. Both nonlinear processes are phase matched for the same direction of propagation in the crystal. The parametric oscillator, pumped by a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser at a wavelength of 745 nm, generates a green output beam at 540 nm with a 29% power conversion efficiency. Angle tuning in conjunction with pump wavelength tuning provides output tunability in the 530-585-nm range.Item Open Access Studies of polymer microring lasers subject to uniaxial stress(2007) Tulek, A.; Vardeny, Z.V.The emission spectra of microring lasers fabricated from π -conjugated polymer films casted on nylon microfibers with diameters in the range of 35-90 μm were studied upon application of uniaxial stress with strain up to ∼12%. The laser emission spectra substantially change with the applied stress, showing enhanced sensitivity to stress over changes induced in the fiber diameter alone. This is explained as due to the induced change in the polymer refractive index spectrum upon stress, causing an unexpected increase in the refractive index dispersion and, consequently, also in the effective refraction index for lasing at emission wavelengths. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.
