Item Open Access Analysis of the (Q, r) inventory model for perishables with positive lead times and lost sales(Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), 2008) Berk, E.; Gürler, Ü.We consider a perishable inventory system with Poisson demands, fixed shelf lives, constant lead times, and lost sales in the presence of nonnegligible fixed ordering costs. The inventory control policy employed is the continuous-review (Q, r) policy, where r < Q. The system is modeled using an embedded Markov process approach by introducing the concept of the effective shelf life of a batch in use. Using the stationary distribution of the effective shelf life, we obtain the expressions for the operating characteristics and construct the expected cost rate function for the inventory system. Our numerical study indicates that the determination of the policy parameters exactly as modeled herein results in significant improvements in cost rates with respect to a previously proposed heuristic. We also compare the (Q, r) policy with respect to a time-based benchmark policy and find that the (Q, r) policy might be impractical for rare events, but overall appears to be a good heuristic policy.Item Open Access Applied Materials uses operations research to design its service and parts network(Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), 2010) Şen, A.; Bhatia, D.; Doǧan, K.Applied Materials Inc. is the global leader in nanomanufacturing technology solutions. It has a broad portfolio of innovative equipment, service, and software products and supports its customers worldwide with an extensive service and parts network with more than 100 locations. At the end of 2006, Applied Materials decided to evaluate and rationalize the design of its North American network. It set up a detailed optimization model (including 50,000 parts) to develop a network and distribution strategy. To our knowledge, this is the first large-scale multiechelon network-design model that incorporates safety stock inventory costs while considering the effects of lead time and risk pooling. The company used the model's recommendations to reduce costs while maintaining or improving its service to customers. The recommendations included simplifying the distribution network by consolidating depot locations for specific customers and skipping an echelon for others, thus leading to a projected inventory reduction of $10 million. The company is currently implementing these recommendations and has already eliminated five depots. Applied Materials estimates that during the first year of implementation, inventory reductions of $5.24 million and total savings of $1.1 million can be attributed to these network changes.Item Open Access CAS reflection implementation at six international baccalaureate diploma programme schools in Turkey(2015) Perry, StirlingThe Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) program is a required experiential learning element of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum. As a means of connecting their experiences with learning, students are required to reflect on their CAS activities. If reflection is not implemented effectively, then students are less likely to internalize the lessons they learn from their experiences. This study examined the ways in which CAS program reflection was implemented at six IBDP schools in Turkey. With a research colleague, I visited the six schools, gathering data from interviews with students, teachers, and administrators, as well as collecting a number of documents related to their CAS programs. According to other research, effective reflection should be implemented using a variety of methods, should occur before, during, and after an experience, and should involve regular feedback from advisors/teachers. The results of my research show that most schools rely primarily on simplistic forms, which do not encourage much authentic reflection, such as periodic essays or verbal interactions between advisors/teachers and students, which can be effective if done correctly. Some aspects of reflection implementation at many schools do not align with the recommendations of prior research. As such, I have made certain prescriptions as to how reflection should be implemented, based on my own and others’ research. Key words: creativity, action, service, CAS, International Baccalaureate, IB, Diploma Programme, DP, reflection, implementation, Turkey, school, experiential learning.Item Open Access Community service learning in international context: a cross-case analysis(2016-06) Uzun, NurgülAlthough there are a number of private-schools that implement service-learning activities within the framework of their international curricula, service-learning is a relatively new concept in public schools in Turkey. The purpose of this study is to use cross-case analysis for exploring and analyzing service-learning initiatives conducted in high school contexts in a variety of countries. To this end, the study aims to identify second-order constructs in selected cases relation to purposes, outcomes, challenges, curriculum integration, effects, opportunities, civic-international mindedness, Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) learning aims and outcomes. The study also intends to use multiple conceptual lenses to interpret the cross-case analyses for informing the practice of service learning. To this end, the researcher primarily utilizes Butin’s conceptual model to develop third-order constructs. The researcher also uses the concepts stemming from character education to further inform practice, such as values education, social-emotional learning and citizenship education. Findings provide insights into the content, processes and outcomes of service learning.Item Open Access Entropy service for secure real-time missioncritical communications(John Wiley and Sons, Ltd, 2022-08-05) Turk, Y.; Tasbag, Yaman Yagiz; Zeydan, E.Real Time Mission Critical Communication (RTMCC) in emergency situations can include real-time video and audio calls between peers and first responders all occurring simultaneously. RTMCC also requires secure end-to-end (E2E) group communication (GC) sessions against potential security threats during such incidents. In this paper, we explore all aspects of the possible methods that are suitable for a software implementation of for session key change during GC in E2E encryption of RTMCC. Later, we introduce our Entropy Service concept, which can be very effective in secure E2E RTMCC sessions. The proposed method ensures E2E security in real-time communication systems while allowing very fast session key change for clients involved in an RTMCC session with a computational complexity of 𝒪(1). Our experimental results show that the proposed Entropy Service can reduce total time by 99.6% and 99.2%, the idle time by 99.4% and 98.99%, and the number of messages by 51.4% and 35.33% compared to the key refreshing and hash methods, respectively, when the number of users in the system increases to 45. These results show that both communication and computation complexity are significantly reduced with the proposed RTMCC session key change.Item Open Access Exploring local and global ideals of beauty in Turkey : discourses and practices of plastic surgery patients and physicians(2008) Tarı, BernaIntrigued by an increase in demand for aesthetic operations all over the world, this study offers an in-depth investigation of plastic surgery as a consumption phenomenon. First, it looks at how local and global notions of the beautiful are negotiated in Turkey through consumption and marketing of aesthetic operations. Second, it looks at the nature of a service relationship formed between the surgeon and the patient-consumer, and how this relationship is constructed and maintained. Gazi University Hospital was chosen as the ethnographic research site. Results indicate that beauty is perceived as something that individuals improve, upgrade, and refine through time. Potential patients tend to have one of two ideals: The individual’s own younger appearance or someone else’s appearance. The ideal presented in the media is changing, making the target both difficult to achieve and difficult to catch. Here it is also possible to talk about a marketing process initiated and maintained by doctors and aesthetic medical companies at a global level. Neither the dominant logic nor the new logic of marketing can satisfactorily explain patient-consumers’ behavior in this context, where boundaries for the product cannot be established and there is considerably higher risk compared to other purchasing situations. It is possible to talk about doctor branding in this context, where brand positioning and brand image cannot be static since doctors are also people. Moreover, patient satisfaction has longitudinal and interpersonal characteristics since it involves the approval of others.Item Restricted Gelik Lokantası ve tarihi(Bilkent University, 2020) Şen, Mert; Demirkırkan, Ege; İbiş, Arda Atahan; Sezer, Zekiye Bersu; Özkara, DoraGelik Lokantası İstanbul’un köklü ve saygın bir lokantasıdır. 1972’den beri varlığını sürdürmektedir.
