Item Restricted A new framework for integration(1990) Fleishman, Joel L.Item Open Access An analysis of manipulated information and respective alternative costs in information systems and in decision making structures(International Institute of Informatics and Systemics, IIIS, 2006) Güvenen O.; Öztürk, M.H.Today Information Technologies create base for the most important decision support systems for the practices in academia, business and politics. The effectiveness and success of operations that are supported by information systems are directly correlated with the quantity, accuracy, timing, credibility and the quality of the information that prevails in the system. Rapid development of these technologies in recent decades allows high level of information transaction and communication through the whole world. The quantity of information that flows through information systems has increased tremendously. New researches and technological applications in this area aim to improve the systems quantitatively. However, despite a huge and continuous increase in information flow, the quality and reliability of the information in the systems are doubtful from many perspectives. We believe that quality and reliability considerations in information technologies are not handled by researchers and users adequately. So in this research we decided to discuss about quality and reliability aspects of the information flow. To be able to evaluate the information from qualitative perspectives, we believe that it is crucial to handle the problem in science and especially in social sciences by endogenising socio-economic phenomena and science methodology approaches. We hope this work will create a stimulus for researchers of Information Technologies and Systems to give importance to the reliability and quality of information issues.Item Restricted Assessing discrimination: A Boolean Approach(1988) Ragin, Charles C.Item Open Access Assessment methods and how teachers and students view them in a computer science course at Uppsala University(ACM, 2010) Ezel, Mithat CanberkI have examined concepts of assessments and aimed to see differences between teachers and students opinions. M.; Belk, R.; Bradford, T. W.; Dobscha, S.; Ger, GülizIn January 2021, the ETHOS Research Center at Bayes Business School, along with the CRIS Research Center at Royal Holloway University of London, hosted an event entitled Decolonizing the Business School. Over 500 attendees participated, from all business disciplines, testifying to the strong levels of interest in this topic. Marketing was particularly active, with over 100 participants. In this article, I (Giana Eckhardt, one of the organizers of the event) speak with the marketing break out room facilitators – Russ Belk, Tonya Bradford, Susan Dobscha, Güliz Ger and Rohit Varman – in a wide-ranging conversation about what decolonization means to the field of marketing, and what marketing academics can do if they would like to explore these ideas further. First, we offer a brief introduction to decolonization. Also, a list of resources for the interested reader is presented as well as ideas for further exploration in this nascent domain at the end.Item Open Access Diversity and novelty in information retrieval(ACM, 2013-07-08) Santos, R. L. T.; Castells, P.; Altıngövde, I. S.; Can, FazlıThis tutorial aims to provide a unifying account of current research on diversity and novelty in different IR domains, namely, in the context of search engines, recommender sys- tems, and data streams.Item Open Access Examining proactive strategic decision-making flexibility in new product development(Wiley-Blackwell Publishing, 2012) Kandemir, D.; Acur, N.While strategic flexibility is widely accepted as a prerequisite for a firm's success, its application in strategic decision making to a firm's new product development (NPD) activities is limited to only a few studies. Furthermore, many organizations still have difficulties creating proactive strategic flexibility in their decision-making processes. Past research studies have largely ignored the relationship between strategic decision-making flexibility and firms' resources and/or capabilities and success in the context of NPD. This study advances strategic flexibility by adopting the proactive approach of NPD decision-making flexibility and by examining its role in translating organizational resources and capabilities into NPD success. This study draws upon the resources, capabilities (i.e., flexibility), and performance framework to show how proactive strategic decision-making flexibility plays a crucial role in developing new products that can create new opportunities and comply with market needs. Therefore, this research aims to (1) develop an operational definition of strategic decision-making flexibility and (2) propose a framework to understand the drivers and the subsequent new product performance outcomes of strategic decision-making flexibility. This study adopts the proactive perspective of strategic decision-making flexibility and defines it as a capability that enables firms to develop NPD strategies to respond to future changes in the environment. The analysis, based on data collected from 103 European firms, shows that that the effects of long-term orientation, strategic planning, internal commitment, and innovative climate on proactive strategic decision-making flexibility are significant. The findings indicate specifically the roles of both champions and gatekeepers, who infuse a firm's knowledge with a clear understanding of its resources, constraints, and market needs, thereby enhancing decision makers' motivation to behave proactively to precipitate transformation. The results also reveal a positive association between proactive strategic decision-making flexibility and NPD performance outcomes. As such, strategic flexibility provides firms with an ability to adapt to changing environments and to create new market opportunities, product, and technological arenas, and to deliver successful new products. When firms open new market, technological, and product arenas, they can easily foresee their new demands and changes and successfully deliver new products, meeting customer needs/demands, and offering benefits such as quality, cost, and timeliness. This study therefore provides a valuable reference point for future research in strategic decision-making flexibility in NPD.Item Restricted Foucault's challenge to critical theory(1986) White, Stephen K.Item Open Access Holographic 3DTV research within the European 3DTV project(Optical Society of America, 2008) Onural, LeventA European project on 3DTV has been functional since September 2004. Holographic displays for 3DTV and signal processing issues associated with diffraction and holography are among research interests. The research has already generated interesting results.Item Restricted Judgment and the cultivation of appreciation in policy-making(1994) Forester, JohnItem Restricted Learning without knowing(1988) Shklar, Judith N.Item Open Access Millimeter-wave scale metamaterials(IEEE, 2009-11) Alıcı, Kamil Boratay; Özbay, EkmelWe review two metamaterial configurations, which are operating at the millimeter-wave scale, in terms of design, fabrication, and characterization. We observed both numerically and experimentally at around 100 GHz a narrow frequency band for which the metamaterial was low loss and had a negative index of refraction. We investigated flat and wedge shaped samples to support our characterization results. We analyzed the transmission band with respect to number of layers at the propagation direction and commented on the bulk nature of these metamaterials. Oblique response of the planar sample was also included in this study. Finally, we demonstrate a device, which yields a rather small angular width at the far field radiation pattern, and composed of a horn antenna and flat metamaterial slabs at the propagation direction. ©2009 IEEE.Item Restricted On Bernhard Waldenfels(1989) Dallmayr, FredItem Open Access Optical core networks research in the e-Photon-ONe+ project(2009) Callegati F.; Cugini F.; Ghobril P.; Gunreben, S.; López V.; Martini, B.; Pavón-Mariño P.; Perényi, M.; Sengezer, N.; Staessens, D.; Szigeti J.; Tornatore, M.This paper reports a summary of the joint research activities on Optical Core Networks within the e-Photon-ONe+ project. It provides a reasonable overview of the topics considered of interest by the European research community and supports the idea of building joint research activities that can leverage on the expertise of different research groups. © 2009 IEEE.Item Open Access Overlooked and understudied? a survey of current trends in research on adult english language learners(Sage Publications, Inc., 2008) Mathews-Aydınlı, JulieThis article provides a synthesis and review of 41 recent research studies focusing on the population of adult English language learners (ELLs) studying in nonacademic contexts. It notes the unique qualities and importance of understanding the English-language needs of this population, provides a critical overview of the existing literature, and concludes that both more research and research from diverse methodological perspectives are necessary.
