Item Open Access Cd-free Cu-doped ZnInS/ZnS Core/Shell nanocrystals: Controlled synthesis and photophysical properties(SpringerOpen, 2018) Kaur, Manpreet; Sharma, Ashma; Olutaş, Murat; Erdem, Onur; Kumar, A.; Sharma, Manoj; Demir, Hilmi VolkanHere, we report efficient composition-tunable Cu-doped ZnInS/ZnS (core and core/shell) colloidal nanocrystals (CNCs) synthesized by using a colloidal non-injection method. The initial precursors for the synthesis were used in oleate form rather than in powder form, resulting in a nearly defect-free photoluminescence (PL) emission. The change in Zn/In ratio tunes the percentage incorporation of Cu in CNCs. These highly monodisperse Cu-doped ZnInS CNCs having variable Zn/In ratios possess peak emission wavelength tunable from 550 to 650 nm in the visible spectrum. The quantum yield (QY) of these synthesized Cd-free CNCs increases from 6.0 to 65.0% after coating with a ZnS shell. The CNCs possessing emission from a mixed contribution of deep trap and dopant states to only dominant dopant-related Stokes-shifted emission are realized by a careful control of stoichiometric ratio of different reactant precursors during synthesis. The origin of this shift in emission was understood by using steady state and time-resolved fluorescence (TRF) spectroscopy studies. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, these blue excitable Cu-doped ZnInS/ZnS CNCs have been integrated with commercial blue LEDs to generate white-light emission (WLE). The suitable combination of these highly efficient doped CNCs results led to a Commission Internationale de l’Enclairage (CIE) color coordinates of (0.33, 0.31) at a color coordinate temperature (CCT) of 3694 K, with a luminous efficacy of optical radiation (LER) of 170 lm/Wopt and a color rendering index (CRI) of 88.Item Open Access The effect of cucurbit[n]uril on the solubility, morphology, and the photophysical properties of nonionic conjugated polymers in an aqueous medium(2010) Tuncel, D.; Artar, M.; Hanay, S. B.The effects of cucurbit[n]uril on the dissolution and the photophysical properties of nonionic conjugated polymers in water are described. For this purpose, a fluorine-based polymer, namely, poly[9,9-bis{6(N,N-dimethylamino) hexyl}fluorene-co-2,5-thienylene (PFT) was synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic techniques including 1D and 2D NMR, UV-vis, fluorescent spectroscopy, and matrix-assisted laser desorption mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS). For the first time, it was demonstrated that a nonionic conjugated polymer can be made soluble in water through an inclusion complex formation with CB8. The structure of the complex was elucidated by NMR experiments including 1H and selective 1D-NOESY. This complex emits green and is highly fluorescent with fluorescent quantum yield of 35%. In contrast, CB6 or water-soluble CB7 although they are chemically identical to CB8 do not have any effect on the dissolution and photophysical properties of PFT. By preparing a protonated version of PFT, the optical properties of PFT in methanol, protonated PFT and PFT@CB8 in water have been studied and compared. It was also observed that the morphology of the polymer PFT was affected by the presence of CB8. Thus CB8-assisted self-assembly of polymer chains leads to vesicles formation; these structures were characterized by DLS, AFM, SEM, and TEM fluorescent optical microscopy.Item Open Access High-stability, high-efficiency organic monoliths made of oligomer nanoparticles wrapped in organic matrix(American Chemical Society, 2016) Soran-Erdem Z.; Erdem, T.; Gungor K.; Pennakalathil, J.; Tuncel, D.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanOligomer nanoparticles (OL NPs) have been considered unsuitable for solid-state lighting due to their low quantum yields and low temperature stability of their emission. Here, we address these problems by forming highly emissive and stable OL NPs solids to make them applicable in lighting. For this purpose, we incorporated OL NPs into sucrose matrix and then prepared their all-organic monoliths. We show that wrapping the OL NPs in sucrose significantly increases their quantum yield up to 44%, while the efficiency of their dispersion and direct solid-film remain only at ∼6%. We further showed ∼3-fold improved temperature stability of OL NP emission within these monoliths. Our experiments revealed that a physical passivation mechanism is responsible from these improvements. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, we successfully employed these high-stability, high-efficiency monoliths as color converters on a blue LED chip. Considering the improved optical features, low cost, and simplicity of the presented methodology, we believe that this study holds great promise for a ubiquitous use of organic OL NPs in lighting and possibly in other photonic applications.Item Open Access Observation of biexcitons in the presence of trions generated via sequential absorption of multiple photons in colloidal quantum dot solids(IEEE, 2012) Cihan, Ahmet Fatih; Hernandez-Martinez Pedro L.; Kelestemur, Yusuf; Demir, Hilmi VolkanMulti exciton generation (MEG) and multi exciton recombination (MER) in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have recently attracted significant scientific interest as a possible means to improve device efficiencies [1-5]. Convenient bandgap tunability, easy colloidal synthesis, and solution-based processability of these QDs make them further attractive for such device applications using MEG and MER. For example, recent theoretical and experimental studies have shown that MEG enables >100% peak external quantum efficiency where the generated multi excitons (MEs) are collected in a simple QD solar cell structure [1]. Furthermore, MEG has also been shown in QD photodetectors exhibiting substantially increased photocurrent levels [2]. Another promising application for MEs is the use of QDs as an alternative gain medium based on MER for lasers. Although MEG is very promising and supported with quite persuasive reports, there are still some debatable issues that need to be clarified. One of the issues that have generated great debates in the field has been the confusion of MER with the recombination of trions, which takes place in photocharged QDs. To utilize MEG and MER in practical devices such as QD solar cells and QD lasing devices, these phenomena need to be well understood. Here, we showed distinct spectrally-resolved temporal behavior of biexciton (BX), single exciton (X) and trion radiative recombinations in near unity quantum yield (QY) quasi-type II CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystal QDs. Upon sequential absorption of multiple photons, the extraction of Xs, BXs, and trions were achieved using time correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) measurements performed on low concentration thin film samples of these QDs at different emission wavelengths. The QDs were embedded in PMMA medium to obtain homogeneous samples and avoid Förster-type nonradiative energy transfer (NRET) between them. Here to extract Xs, BXs, and trions, we devised a new analysis approach for the time decays of the QDs that allowed us to attribute the physical events to their corresponding time decay terms, which were further verified with their excitation intensity dependencies [6]. © 2012 IEEE.
