Item Open Access A beam search algorithm to optimize robustness under random machine breakdowns and processing time variability(Institute of Industrial Engineers, 2007) Gören, S.; Sabuncuoğlu, İhsanThe vast majority of the machine scheduling research assumes complete information about the scheduling problem and a static environment in which scheduling systems operate. In practice, however, scheduling systems are subject to considerable uncertainty in dynamic environments. The ability to cope with the uncertainty in scheduling process is becoming increasingly important in today's highly dynamic and competitive business environments. In the literature, two approaches have appeared as the effective way: reactive and proactive scheduling. The objective in reactive scheduling is to revise schedules as necessary, while proactive scheduling attempts to incorporate future disruptions when generating schedules. In this paper we take a proactive scheduling approach to solve a machine scheduling problem with two sources of uncertainty: processing time variability and machine breakdowns. We define two robustness measures and develop a heuristic based on beam search methodology to optimize them. The computational results show that the proposed algorithms perform significantly better than a number of heuristics available in the literature.Item Open Access Capture, processing, and display of real-world 3D objects using digital holography(IEEE, 2010) Naughton, T.J.; Falldorf, C.; Onural, Levent; Ferraro P.; Depeursinge, C.; Krueger, S.; Emery, Y.; Hennelly, B.M.; Kujawifiska, M."Digital holography for 3D and 4D real-world objects' capture, processing, and display" (acronym "Real 3D") is a research project funded under the Information and Communication Technologies theme of the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme, and brings together nine participants from academia and industry (see www.digitalholography.eu).This three-year project marks the beginning a long-term effort to facilitate the entry of a new technology (digital holography) into the three-dimensional capture and display markets. Its progress at the end of year 2 is summarised. © 2010 IEEE.Item Open Access Feedback-labelling synergies in judgmental stock price forecasting(Elsevier, 2004) Goodwin, P.; Önkal-Atay, D.; Thomson, M. E.; Pollock, A. C.; Macaulay, A.Research has suggested that outcome feedback is less effective than other forms of feedback in promoting learning by users of decision support systems. However, if circumstances can be identified where the effectiveness of outcome feedback can be improved, this offers considerable advantages, given its lower computational demands, ease of understanding and immediacy. An experiment in stock price forecasting was used to compare the effectiveness of outcome and performance feedback: (i) when different forms of probability forecast were required, and (ii) with and without the presence of contextual information provided as labels. For interval forecasts, the effectiveness of outcome feedback came close to that of performance feedback, as long as labels were provided. For directional probability forecasts, outcome feedback was not effective, even if labels were supplied. In this study, Finite state machine (FSM) based high-level controller and Kinect based navigation algorithm have been developed for ATEKS (Intelligent Wheelchair) which has high-tech control mechanisms, low-cost sensors and open source software (ROS, GAZEBO, ANDROID). © 2014 IEEE.Item Open Access MoDSEL: model-driven software evolution language(IGI Global, 2013) Er, E.; Tekinerdogan, B.Model-Driven Software Development (MDSD) aims to support the development and evolution of software intensive systems using the basic concepts of model, metamodel, and model transformation. In parallel with the ongoing academic research, MDSD is more and more applied in industrial practices. Like conventional non-MDSD practices, MDSD systems are also subject to changing requirements and have to cope with evolution. In this chapter, the authors provide a scenario-based approach for documenting and analyzing the impact of changes that apply to model-driven development systems. To model the composition and evolution of an MDSD system, they developed the so-called Model-Driven Software Evolution Language (MoDSEL) which is based on a megamodel for MDSD. MoDSEL includes explicit language abstractions to specify both the model elements of an MDSD system and the evolution scenarios that might apply to model elements. Based on MoDSEL specifications, an impact analysis is performed to assess the impact of evolution scenarios and the sensitivity of model elements. A case study is provided to show different kind of evolution scenarios and the required adaptations to model elements. © 2014, IGI Global.Item Open Access Processing of optically-captured digital holograms for three-dimensional display(2009-04) Naughton, T.J.; Kreis, T.; Onural, Levent; Ferraro, P.; Depeursinge, C.; Emery, Y.; Hennelly, B. M.; Kujawiñska, M.In digital holography, holograms are usually optically captured and then two-dimensional slices of the reconstruction volume are reconstructed by computer and displayed on a two-dimensional display. When the recording is of a three-dimensional scene then such two-dimensional display becomes restrictive. We outline our progress on capturing larger ranges of perspectives of three-dimensional scenes, and our progress on four approaches to better visualise this three-dimensional information encoded in the digital holograms.
