Item Open Access Bounding the Set of Finite Dimensional Quantum Correlations(American Physical Society, 2015) Navascués, M.; Vértesi, T.We describe a simple method to derive high performance semidefinite programing relaxations for optimizations over complex and real operator algebras in finite dimensional Hilbert spaces. The method is very flexible, easy to program, and allows the user to assess the behavior of finite dimensional quantum systems in a number of interesting setups. We use this method to bound the strength of quantum nonlocality in Bell scenarios where the dimension of the parties is bounded from above. We derive new results in quantum communication complexity and prove the soundness of the prepare-and-measure dimension witnesses introduced in Gallego et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 230501 (2010). Finally, we propose a new dimension witness that can distinguish between classical, real, and complex two-level systems. © 2015 American Physical Society. © 2015 American Physical Society.Item Open Access Nonthermal Quantum Channels as a Thermodynamical Resource(American Physical Society, 2015) Navascués, M.; García-Pintos L.P.Quantum thermodynamics can be understood as a resource theory, whereby thermal states are free and the only allowed operations are unitary transformations commuting with the total Hamiltonian of the system. Previous literature on the subject has just focused on transformations between different state resources, overlooking the fact that quantum operations which do not commute with the total energy also constitute a potentially valuable resource. In this Letter, given a number of nonthermal quantum channels, we study the problem of how to integrate them in a thermal engine so as to distill a maximum amount of work. We find that, in the limit of asymptotically many uses of each channel, the distillable work is an additive function of the considered channels, computable for both finite dimensional quantum operations and bosonic channels. We apply our results to bound the amount of distillable work due to the natural nonthermal processes postulated in the Ghirardi-Rimini-Weber (GRW) collapse model. We find that, although GRW theory predicts the possibility of extracting work from the vacuum at no cost, the power which a collapse engine could, in principle, generate is extremely low. © 2015 American Physical Society. © 2015 American Physical Society.Item Open Access PID controller design for fractional-order systems with time delays(Elsevier, 2011-11-22) Özbay, Hitay; Bonnet, C.; Fioravanti, A.R.Classical proper PID controllers are designed for linear time invariant plants whose transfer functions are rational functions of sα, where 0<α<1, and s is the Laplace transform variable. Effect of inputoutput time delay on the range of allowable controller parameters is investigated. The allowable PID controller parameters are determined from a small gain type of argument used earlier for finite dimensional plants.Item Open Access Strong stabilization of MIMO systems with restricted zeros in the unstable region(IEEE, 2008-12) Gündeş, A. Nazlı; Özbay, HitayThe strong stabilization problem (i.e., stabilization by a stable feedback controller) is considered for a class of finite dimensional linear, time-invariant, multi-input multioutput plants. It is assumed that the plant satisfies the parity interlacing property, which is a necessary condition for the existence of strongly stabilizing controllers. Furthermore, the plant class under consideration has no restrictions on the poles, on the zeros in the open left-half complex plane, on the zeros at the origin or at infinity; but only one finite positive real zero is allowed. A systematic strongly stabilizing controller design procedure is proposed that applies to any plant in the class, whereas alternative approaches may work for larger class of plants but only under certain sufficient conditions. The freedom available in the design parameters may be used for additional performance objectives although the only goal here is strong stabilization. In the special case of single-input single-output plants in the class considered, the proposed stable controllers have order one less than the order of the plant. © 2008 IEEE.
