Item Open Access Dynamic tuning of plasmon resonance in the visible using graphene(The Optical Society, 2016) Balci, S.; Balci, O.; Kakenov, N.; Atar, F. B.; Kocabas, C.We report active electrical tuning of plasmon resonance of silver nanoprisms (Ag NPs) in the visible spectrum. Ag NPs are placed in close proximity to graphene which leads to additional tunable loss for the plasmon resonance. The ionic gating of graphene modifies its Fermi level from 0.2 to 1 eV, which then affects the absorption of graphene due to Pauli blocking. Plasmon resonance frequency and linewidth of Ag NPs can be reversibly shifted by 20 and 35 meV, respectively. The coupled graphene-Ag NPs system can be classically described by a damped harmonic oscillator model. Atomic layer deposition allows for controlling the graphene-Ag NP separation with atomic-level precision to optimize coupling between them.Item Open Access Light-induced pitch transitions in photosensitive cholesteric liquid crystals: Effects of anchoring energy(American Physical Society, 2014) Orlova, T. N.; Iegorov, R. I.; Kiselev, A. D.We experimentally study how the cholesteric pitch P depends on the equilibrium pitch P0 in planar liquid crystal (LC) cells with both strong and semistrong anchoring conditions. The cholesteric phase was induced by dissolution in the nematic LC of the right-handed chiral dopant 7-dehydrocholesterol (7-DHC, provitamin D3) which transforms to left-handed tachysterol under the action of uv irradiation at the wavelength of 254 nm. By using the model of photoreaction kinetics we obtain the dependencies of isomer concentrations and, therefore, of the equilibrium pitch on the uv irradiation dose. The cholesteric pitch was measured as a function of irradiation time using the polarimetry method. In this method, the pitch is estimated from the experimental data on the irradiation time dependence of the ellipticity of light transmitted through the LC cells. It is found that the resulting dependence of the twist parameter 2D/P (D is the cell thickness) on the free twisting number parameter 2D/P0 shows jumplike behavior and agrees well with the known theoretical results for the anchoring potential of Rapini-Papoular form. © 2014 American Physical Society.Item Open Access Low thermal-mass LEDs: Size effect and limits(Optical Society of American (OSA), 2014) Lu, S.; Liu W.; Zhang, Z.-H.; Tan, S.T.; Ju, Z.; Ji, Y.; Zhang X.; Zhang, Y.; Zhu, B.; Kyaw, Z.; Hasanov, N.; Sun X.W.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanIn this work, low thermal-mass LEDs (LTM-LEDs) were developed and demonstrated in flip-chip configuration, studying both experimentally and theoretically the enhanced electrical and optical characteristics and the limits. LTM-LED chips in 25 × 25 μm2, 50 × 50 μm2, 100 × 100 μm2 and 200 × 200 μm2 mesa sizes were fabricated and comparatively investigated. Here it was revealed that both the electrical and optical properties are improved by the decreasing chip size due to the reduced thermal mass. With a smaller chip size (from 200 μm to 50 μm), the device generally presents higher current density against the bias and higher power density against the current density. However, the 25 × 25 μm2 device behaves differently, limited by the fabrication margin limit of 10 μm. The underneath mechanisms of these observations are uncovered, and furthermore, based on the device model, it is proven that for a specific flip-chip fabrication process, the ideal size for LTM-LEDs with optimal power density performance can be identified. ©2014 Optical Society of America
