Item Open Access The afraid create the fear: perceptions of refugees by ‘gün’ groups in Turkey(Routledge, 2021) Özçürümez, Saime; Mete, HaticeThis study investigates the perceptions of the local female population towards displaced Syrians in Turkey. The research is based on the analysis of data from participant observation and discourse analysis of conversations in five ‘gün’ groups, which are informal, social, and fairly regular gatherings of local women, in Mersin in Spring 2018. Five common discursive patterns are identified: stereotyping, biased perceptions, ‘us’ vs. ‘them’, scapegoating, and discrimination. We conclude that local women’s discourses reveal marginalisation and discursive exclusion of displaced Syrians in Turkey, and argue that such othering originates not only from existing cultural differences, language barriers, and lack of trust, but also from lack of sustained social interaction between these groups. Further studies should facilitate both knowledge sharing about the additional vulnerabilities such attitudes create for displaced people and potential paths for meaningful engagement between local community members and forcibly displaced people.Item Restricted Bir kadın gazetecinin gözünden 80'lerde ulusal gazetecilik: Yurdagül Şimşek(Bilkent University, 2020) Özel, Asena; Sarıcaoğlu, Aysu Ece; Ergun, Berk; Karakaş, Dicle Doğa; Aydoğan, Miray BeyzaBu çalışmada 1980-1990 yıllarında dönemin sosyal ve ekonomik şartları çerçevesinde gazeteci Yurdagül Şimşek ve Yurdagül Şimşek'in bir kadın gazeteci olarak meslek hayatı boyunca yaşadıkları ve bir kadın gazetecinin gözünden gazetecilik mesleği anlatılmaktadır. Bu dönemde yaşanan 12 Eylül darbesinin basında ve gazetecilikte oluşturduğu baskının yanı sıra, gazetecilik sektöründeki kadınlar diğer tüm mesleklerde olduğu gibi gerek işe alım süresince gerekse mesleklerini icra etmekte çeşitli problemlerle karşılaşmaktaydılar.Item Embargo Does negative media representation shape adolescents’ discrimination towards Syrian refugees through threat perception and prejudice?(Elsevier Ltd, 2023-05-05) Gönültaş, Seçil; Mulvey, K. L.The current study examined whether adolescents' desired social distance from Syrian refugees is shaped by negative media representation about refugees through threat perception and prejudice. Participants consisted of 587 Turkish high (Mage = 14.81, SD = 0.97) and middle school (Mage = 12.19, SD = 1.01) students. Negative media perception was measured in different contexts: TV programs, news, newspapers/magazines, and social media. Adolescents' desired social distance from Syrian refugees was measured through their preference for how socially distant from a Syrian peer in their neighborhood and school they wished to be. Perceived threat and prejudice were examined as possible mediators of the relationship between media exposure and discrimination. Results showed that more negative media representation was related to perceived threat and greater prejudice, which led to greater desired social distance from refugees. Findings provide important implications about how media can be an important tool in shaping intergroup attitudes towards Syrian refugees during adolescence.Item Open Access Ethnic identity and discrimination among children(Elsevier BV, 2012-12) Friesen, J.; Arifovic, J.; Wright, S. C.; Ludwig, A.; Giamo, L.; Baray, G.We engaged over 430 Canadian children in a series of activities designed to reveal their evaluations of three ethnic groups (White, East Asian and South Asian), their identification with these groups, and their behavior towards them in a dictator game. Our experiments took place at the children’s schools during their normal school day, allowing us to evaluate the salience and effects of ethnic identities on economically relevant behavior in an important natural setting. We find that children from the dominant White category have a clear sense of White ethnic identity, and tend to favor White recipients in the dictator game relative to East Asian or South Asian recipients. Minority East Asian children reveal a more complex ethnic identity; they perceive themselves to be equally similar to White and East Asian children. Unlike Whites, East Asian children do not favor recipients from their own East Asian category, nor do they favor recipients with whom they tend to identify. If anything, East Asian children show out-group favoritism.Item Open Access Experiential nature of product-place images: image as a narrative(Association for Consumer Research, 1999) Ger, G.; Askegaard, S.; Christensen, A.This paper takes an interpretative approach to imagery related to country of origin and proposes a conceptual framework based on stereotyping and experientially constructed meaning. Countries and nations engender mythological narratives in other countries as they become part of the signification process concerning Aforeign-domestic@ and Acountry X-country Y@. This depth in meaning is best captured through an experiential approach. We suggest that the dimensions of place, product, market context and usage context are central to understanding contextualized product-place images (CPPIs). Furthermore, we suggest interpretive methodologies to assess CPPIs. Demonstration of the strength of this approach rests on ongoing empirical research.Item Open Access Learning to perceive non-native tones via distributional training: Effects of task and acoustic cue weighting(MDPI, 2022-04-27) Liu, Liquan; Yuan, Chi; Ong, Jia Hoong; Tuninetti, Alba; Antoniou, Mark; Cutler, Anne; Escudero, PaolaAs many distributional learning (DL) studies have shown, adult listeners can achieve discrimination of a difficult non-native contrast after a short repetitive exposure to tokens falling at the extremes of that contrast. Such studies have shown using behavioural methods that a short distributional training can induce perceptual learning of vowel and consonant contrasts. However, much less is known about the neurological correlates of DL, and few studies have examined non-native lexical tone contrasts. Here, Australian-English speakers underwent DL training on a Mandarin tone contrast using behavioural (discrimination, identification) and neural (oddball-EEG) tasks, with listeners hearing either a bimodal or a unimodal distribution. Behavioural results show that listeners learned to discriminate tones after both unimodal and bimodal training; while EEG responses revealed more learning for listeners exposed to the bimodal distribution. Thus, perceptual learning through exposure to brief sound distributions (a) extends to non-native tonal contrasts, and (b) is sensitive to task, phonetic distance, and acoustic cue-weighting. Our findings have implications for models of how auditory and phonetic constraints influence speech learning. © 2022 by the authors. Ayrıca, özellikle metal ve rock müzik dinleyen gençlerin toplumdan nasıl dışlandıklarına ve ötekileştirildiğine ve topluma uyum sağlamak için dış görünüşlerinde yapmak zorunda kaldıkları değişikliklere değinilecektirItem Open Access Public toilets: an exploratory study on the demands, needs, and expectations in Turkey(Pion Limited, 2015) Afacan, Yasemin; Gurel, M. O.Provision of public toilets is not only a matter of land use, but also an essential design and planning concern. This study examines the following questions through an explanatory study. (i) What problems do public toilets pose? (ii) What toilet facilities do people require most and/or most emphasize would affect the way they use land and participate in social life? (iii) How do demands, needs, and expectations around public toilets change depending on gender, age, and ability? We conduct a survey of 300 people in fourteen public restrooms in the city centre of Ankara, Turkey. According to factor analysis results, public toilets should be seen as potential urban spaces and initial opportunities for sustainable urban developments and liveable cities.
