Item Open Access FAME: Face association through model evolution(IEEE, 2015-06) Gölge, Eren; Duygulu, PınarWe attack the problem of building classifiers for public faces from web images collected through querying a name. The search results are very noisy even after face detection, with several irrelevant faces corresponding to other people. Moreover, the photographs are taken in the wild with large variety in poses and expressions. We propose a novel method, Face Association through Model Evolution (FAME), that is able to prune the data in an iterative way, for the models associated to a name to evolve. The idea is based on capturing discriminative and representative properties of each instance and eliminating the outliers. The final models are used to classify faces on novel datasets with different characteristics. On benchmark datasets, our results are comparable to or better than the state-of-the-art studies for the task of face identification. © 2015 IEEE.Item Open Access Fast-dissolving, prolonged release, and antibacterial cyclodextrin/limonene-inclusion complex nanofibrous webs via polymer-free electrospinning(American Chemical Society, 2016) Aytac Z.; Yildiz, Z. I.; Kayaci-Senirmak, F.; S. Keskin, N. O.; Kusku, S. I.; Durgun, Engin; Tekinay, T.; Uyar, TamerWe have proposed a new strategy for preparing free-standing nanofibrous webs from an inclusion complex (IC) of a well-known flavor/fragrance compound (limonene) with three modified cyclodextrins (HPβCD, MβCD, and HPγCD) via electrospinning (CD/limonene-IC-NFs) without using a polymeric matrix. The experimental and computational modeling studies proved that the stoichiometry of the complexes was 1:1 for CD/limonene systems. MβCD/limonene-IC-NF released much more limonene at 37, 50, and 75 °C than HPβCD/limonene-IC-NF and HPγCD/limonene-IC-NF because of the greater amount of preserved limonene. Moreover, MβCD/limonene-IC-NF has released only 25% (w/w) of its limonene, whereas HPβCD/limonene-IC-NF and HPγCD/limonene-IC-NF released 51 and 88% (w/w) of their limonene in 100 days, respectively. CD/limonene-IC-NFs exhibited high antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. The water solubility of limonene increased significantly and CD/limonene-IC-NFs were dissolved in water in a few seconds. In brief, CD/limonene-IC-NFs with fast-dissolving character enhanced the thermal stability and prolonged the shelf life along with antibacterial properties could be quite applicable in food and oral care applications.Item Open Access Modeling of evaporation from a sessile constant shape droplet(ASME, 2017) Akkuş, Y.; Çetin, Barbaros; Dursunkaya, Z.In this study, a computational model for the evaporation from a sessile liquid droplet fed from the center to keep the diameter of the droplet constant is presented. The continuity, momentum and energy equations are solved with temperature dependent thermo-physical properties using COMSOL Multi-physics. At the surface of the droplet, convective heat and evaporative mass fluxes are assigned. Since the flow field is affected by evaporative flux, an iterative scheme is built and the computation is automated using COMSOL-MATLAB interface. Correlations are implemented to predict the convective heat transfer coefficients and evaporative flux. Three different wall temperatures are used in simulations. The results show that the flow inside the droplet is dominated by buoyancy when the effect of the thermo-capillarity is neglected. The resulting flow generates a circulation pattern emerging from the entrance to the apex, along the surface of the droplet to the bottom heated wall and back to the entrance.Item Open Access Selective and efficient removal of volatile organic compounds by channel-type gamma-cyclodextrin assembly through inclusion complexation(American Chemical Society, 2017) Celebioglu A.; Ipek, S.; Durgun, Engin; Uyar, TamerCyclodextrins (CD), produced from enzymatic degradation of starch, are a form of biorenewable cyclic oligosaccharide which has an outstanding capability to form inclusion complexes with a variety of molecules including pollutants due to their toroid-shaped molecular structure. In this study, by a simple reprecipitation method, we obtained "channel-type" packing from γ-CD where CD molecules are stacked on top of each other to form long cylindrical channels. The γ-CD "channel-type" crystals have shown very effective removal of organic volatile compounds (VOCs; aniline and toluene) from the surroundings, whereas cage-type γ-CD could not entrap VOCs from the same environment. Encapsulation capability of channel-type γ-CD is at a ∼2:1 and ∼1:1 molar ratio for aniline/CD and toluene/CD, respectively. Thus, channel-type γ-CD crystals have shown higher removal efficiency for aniline compared to toluene. Channel-type γ-CD is also able to remove aniline selectively from surroundings. Additionally, computational modeling studies suggested that single γ-CD cavity can host two molecules of aniline or toluene for the complexation, yet, aniline is more insistent to make a complex with the γ-CD cavity when compared to toluene. We show that channel-type γ-CD can remove VOCs molecules (aniline and toluene) as efficiently as activated carbon. Hence, being a starch-based biorenewable cyclic oligosaccharide in the form of white powder, the use of "channel-type" γ-CD crystals could be a competitive alternative to activated carbon as an adsorbent for the VOC removal/filtering.
