Item Open Access Brief notes on the Byzantine Insular Urbanism between Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages(Center for Cyprus Studies-Eastern Mediterranean University, 2020) Zavagno, LucaThis paper aims at reassessing the concept of peripherality of the Byzantine insular world. It is suggested that Sicily, Crete and Cyprus (and to a lesser extent Malta, Sardinia and the Balearics) acted as a third political and economic pole between the Anatolian plateau and the Aegean Sea in the Byzantine Mediterranean. This will shed “archeological” light on some parallel economic and political trajectories of the urban centers located on two of the abovementioned islands: Salamis-Constantia on Cyprus and Gortyn in Crete during the transition from Late Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages.Item Open Access The Byzantine city: a symphony in three movements(Palgrave Pivot, 2021-10-07) Zavagno, LucaThis chapter presents the reader with three preliminary and different themes that will recur across the book as taking their cue from the changes of some exemplary Byzantine cities like Ephesos and Euchaita. The first has to do with the importance of tracking the transformation of the urban functions across space and time. The second concern the methodological approach adopted in the book. Indeed, the changes in urban functions, landscape, structure, and fabric will be explored by bringing together the most recent results stemming from urban archaeological excavations, the results of analyses of material culture (ceramic, coins, seals), and a reassessment of the documentary and hagiographical sources. The third aims to explain how Byzantine urban sites located in different parts of the empire (Byzantine heartland vis a vis the coastal-insula koine) reverberated the changes experienced by the political, social, and economic imperial super-structure a regional and sub-regional levelItem Open Access Content-based retrieval of historical Ottoman documents stored as textual images(IEEE, 2004) Şaykol, E.; Sinop, A. K.; Güdükbay, Uğur; Ulusoy, Özgür; Çetin, A. EnisThere is an accelerating demand to access the visual content of documents stored in historical and cultural archives. Availability of electronic imaging tools and effective image processing techniques makes it feasible to process the multimedia data in large databases. In this paper, a framework for content-based retrieval of historical documents in the Ottoman Empire archives is presented. The documents are stored as textual images, which are compressed by constructing a library of symbols occurring in a document, and the symbols in the original image are then replaced with pointers into the codebook to obtain a compressed representation of the image. The features in wavelet and spatial domain based on angular and distance span of shapes are used to extract the symbols. In order to make content-based retrieval in historical archives, a query is specified as a rectangular region in an input image and the same symbol-extraction process is applied to the query region. The queries are processed on the codebook of documents and the query images are identified in the resulting documents using the pointers in textual images. The querying process does not require decompression of images. The new content-based retrieval framework is also applicable to many other document archives using different scripts.Item Open Access A countryside in transition: The Galinoporni-Kaleburnu Plain (Cyprus) in the passage from Late Antiquity to the early Middle Ages (ca. 600–ca. 850)(Akademie Ved Ceske Republiky * Archeologicky Ustav, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Institute of Archeology, 2018) Zavagno, Luca; Kızılduman, B.This paper aims to both tip the chronologically-unbalanced rural surveys conducted on the island of Cyprus in the last decades (as focusing almost exclusively on the Roman and Late Antique period) and re-assess the traditional historiographical interpretation of the fate of local rural settlements and population in the passage from Late Antiquity to the early Middle Ages (i.e. between the late sixth to the early ninth century). Indeed, we cannot simply take for granted that at the time under scrutiny Cyprus was overwhelmed by Arab incursions turning the island into a no man’s land, severing commercial and shipping routes, bringing to an end any economic, social and cultural form of life in the countryside, causing massive depopulation and abandonment of prosperous rural villages along the coasts in favor of hastily built and fortified (often seasonal) hilltop settlements. In the light of the latter remark, the authors will use the preliminary results of a recent extensive rural survey conducted in the plain of Galinoporni/Kaleburnu on the Karpas peninsula to propose a picture of the Cypriot landscape as characterized by the early medieval resilience of the varied range of rural settlements (farms, hamlets and villages) dating back to previous centuries and by the lack of any catastrophic occupational gaps after the mid-seventh century. Item Open Access A Foucaultian reading of genetic science : archaeologizing the science of the gene(Bilkent University, 2003) Çevik, Neslihan KevserIn recent decades the problems posed by modern genetics has increasingly become a subject of debate within the social sciences. Those debates lead us to ask whether genetics is strictly a scientific endeavor. That begs a further question which forms the focus of this study: What else is modern genetics besides being a scientific concern? The aim of the thesis, therefore, is to begin to ask what genetic science really is. In order to achieve that goal the thesis seeks to examine gene technology through Foucaultian eyes. With that in mind Chapter I sketches an interpretation of Michel Foucault’s theoretical position. On the basis of that chapter, it can be argued that he conceives of power as the painstaking control of the life conditions of the body. Such a conceptualization of power interprets the government of the body both in terms of the tactics of domination and in terms of the techniques of the self. Chapter 2, by showing the way in which he applied this conceptualization to historical experiences provides us ii with an intriguing perspective through which to consider what modern genetics is. That archaeological approach conceives the constitution of new modalities of power in terms of dislocations and discursive transformations. Chapter 3 seeks to apply that interpretation of Foucault to modern genetics. As a result of such a reading, it is argued that modern genetics is not only a scientific concern, but also a new technique of the self (ethopolitics) and a new tactic of domination (molecular politics.)Item Restricted Geçmişe açılan kapı: Karain mağarası(Bilkent University, 2023) Barış, Sedef; Gürbüz, Kerem; Çağlar, Zeynep; Güzelgöz, . In this context, the settlement patterns of the region between Eskişehir and Bilecik and their reflection on settlement distribution and modification from the Late Byzantine to Early Ottoman Periods will be analyzed and interpreted using archaeological and historical data through the reconstruction of the Early Ottoman landscape in the region. The dissertation first examines archeological evidence relating to the Late Byzantine and Early Ottoman periods, including pottery and architecture. In the second part, it presents the extant evidence for and critical analyses of the relevant historical data dating a period from Mantzikert to Bapheus Battles. Through these evidences, the collected data from archaeological survey in the research area in Eskişehir and Bilecik provinces are analyzed. In this analysis, the data is discussed in the methodology of historical archaeology, especially documentary archaeology based on examining archaeological artifacts and historical texts together. Lastly, this study investigates the settlement patterns of Early Ottoman State in the research area and its reflection of social and cultural phenomenon characterized by the frontier (uç) cultural atmosphere. The research area was the conjunction and interaction area for two main cultural complexes, which were newcomers Turkmens and local Byzantines. The effect of these two cultural complexes to the settlement pattern was based on settlement strategies in the topography and the frontier social and cultural phenomenon in the both societies. In this context, the restricted and problematic topography and the pastoralist system determined the cultural, political and economic landscapes.Item Open Access History of archaeological and cultural heritage management in Turkey and Europe : a look from the past to the present(Bilkent University, 2003) Saraç, DinçThis paper explores the historical evolution of archaeological heritage management in Turkey and in Europe. Its overall aim is to draw attention to the growing significance of archaeological heritage management, and to discuss the modern approaches related to this field. Within the European context, the history of archaeological protection goes back to the seventeenth century. In the nineteenth century, the preservation of archaeological heritage became a firmly established concept all over Europe when most of the European countries established legislations and relevant institutions associated with archaeology. After World War II, archaeology became a tool to rehabilitate the European historical past in advance of redevelopment in the war-torn cities of Europe. Today, archaeological heritage management in Europe is regarded as the collective responsibility of all nations and all disciplines. Turkey has a long experience in archaeology like most of the European countries and it possesses substantial archaeological resources, but the archaeological heritage in the country is not adequately preserved and managed due to administrative, bureaucratic, educational, legislative and economic problems. These problems, which also exist in most of the European countries such as Greece and Italy, are needed to be overcome by Turkey preparing to become a member of the European Union. However, there is a very limited number of phytolith studies focused on Anatolia. Kinet H oyük is one of the eligible sites since extensive archaeobotanical studies were conducted and studies are ongoing. From Kinet, 23 samples are studied for phytolith analysis. 13 of them are extractions from soil samples and 10 of them are samples which are suspected to contain phytolith fibers. The contexts vary between room floor sediments to storage pits. For this study, the focus is on the multicellular phytoliths, since they can be used for a higher resolution of identification (Rosen, 1992). This study aims to observe the chronological changes in storage pit use, if there are any, and the variation between contexts. Another focus will be the use of reed in these contexts and the possible reasons for their use. For this thesis, quantifiable data was obtained and they were subject to statistical analysis. The results suggest that there are no contextual difference in the phytolith assemblage of Kinet; however, chronological changes were observed.Item Restricted Remzi Oğuz Arık biyografisi(Bilkent University, 2022) Kılıç, Şükran Başak; Gürsoy, Yağmur; Orçan, Deniz; Sarıtaç, Pelin Şevval; Nakas, EceRemzi Oğuz Arık, hayatı boyunca özellikle arkeoloji alanında faaliyetlerde bulunmuş; siyasetle ilgilenmiş ve bunların yanı sıra birkaç tane de kitap yazmıştır. Tectonic subsidence of the coastline has submerged a number of archaeological features associated with an important Early Bronze Archaic settlement (Liman Tepe) and the classical Ionian city of Clazomenae. Seismic surveys were focused on imaging of an Archaic harbour structure and other submerged Hellenistic and Roman architectural features. Seismic data were acquired with the SEAMAP-3D ultra-high-resolution 3D marine seismic acquisition system developed for detailed archaeological site investigation. A 2D reconnaissance survey was performed over a 2 km2 area around Karantina Island to evaluate the seismic penetrability and to locate sites for further 3D investigation. This survey predominantly revealed marine sediment layers covering the local bedrock, which is characterized by scattering of seismic energy showing its rocky nature. Two ultra-high-resolution 3D seismic surveys were performed. The first covered a 350 m × 30 m area in the modern harbour targeting a prominent Archaic harbour structure. The second was acquired across a 120 m × 40 m area on the southeast shore of the Karantina Island close to a Roman architectural feature. The 3D surveys were acquired with nominal line spacings of 1 m, using a 8× 4 pseudo-rigid hydrophone array and a Boomer source firing at 3 Hz shot frequency. Automated processing of the seismic data using a portable Linux cluster provided stacked 3D seismic volumes with 25 cm × 25 cm bin size on-site. The 3D seismic survey of the harbour clearly imaged the submerged Archaic structure and the underlying sediment sequence. The seismic time slices reveal two seismic anomalies (2–3 m in diameter) in the harbour basin sediments. The 3D surveys southeast of Karantina identified a thicker marine sediment sequence overlying steeply dipping bedrock reflectors. The sediment sequence records the rapid accumulation and progradation of the coastline following the construction the Alexander causeway linking the mainland with the island in 334 B.C.
