In this work, the Warehouse and Stock Control System in TEPE CO. is chosen as a case study to examine a planned organizational change by the implementation of an MIS.Item Open Access Steps to building a target market model for a new university(Bilkent University, 1988) Kuruç, KurtIn order to form a segmentation base for Bilkent University, and position accordingly, a model is developed which relates student performances at Bilkent University to their socio-economic and educational backgrounds. In addition, analyses of the information sources of the matriculants, in terms of both the assessments of the sources and the relative effects of the sources on the matriculant’s decision are performed. Similarly, the factors that influence the matriculants are analysed both in terms of how Bilkent University is perceived according to each factor, and the relative effect of that factor on the matriculant’s final decision.Item Open Access The Changing role of the IMF(Bilkent University, 1989) Kasapgil, M. EminIn this study, requirements o f the international monetary system and evolution o f the IMF's role in the system are studied. The IMF's role changed over the past years by force o f circumstances, moved towards long term lending, and recently involved in the negotiations o f debt reschedulings with cred itor banks. For this, it is criticised to have broken away from the principles o f the Bretton Woods conference where it was conceived. Recently, the IMF's role and functions become controversial· particu larly by high-debt developing countries.Item Open Access Utilization of critical path method in the planning and scheduling of a model drinking water treatment plant(Bilkent University, 1989) Peker, Oğuz AtaItem Open Access An Easy way to computerize an accounting system(Bilkent University, 1989) Hamam, SudadThis thesis is principally a conversion of the manual accounting system of a small firm to a computer-based one. Focus w ill be on the benefits of a computer-based accounting system together w ith the risks that may result due to the differences betw een manual and automated processing. Another related aim is to show that time has come to computerize the manual accounting systems of the small and medium sized firms.Item Open Access Purchasing power parity: An Application for Turkey (1980-1987)(Bilkent University, 1989) Bilge, CemPurchasing Power Parity (PPP) is claimed to be the oldest and simplest theory in determining the exchange rates of currencies. With its three versions, absolute PPP, relative PPP, and efficient markets PPP, this theory argues that price index levels of the countries are considered while setting the exchange rates. In this study, a general review of the theorj' and its failures are initially summarized. As the main purpose of the paper, the relative PPP has been applied for Turkey between 1980 and 1987 by taking USA as the comparision country. The application has been concentrated on both the official and black-market exchange rate determinations.Item Open Access Is Culture a superficial barrier to global marketing?: A Case study of food and drink products in Turkey(Bilkent University, 1989) Sezer, SibelIn a world of converging needs and desires, globally standardizing products would lead to lower production costs, improved quality of products as well as management. The validity of this argument proposed by "global marketing" is discussed taking into consideration the differences existing within cultures and whether culture is in fact a barrier to globalization. A study was conducted in order to explore whether global marketing strategies can be successful in Turkey for food and drink products competing with local counterparts with regard to age, sex and so c i o economic status comparisons.Item Open Access Portfolio selection methods: An Application to İstanbul Securities Exchange(Bilkent University, 1989) Seler, İ. TunçIn this study, Modern Portfolio Theory tools -are used for constructing efficient portfolios. The Markowitz mean-variance model and Sharpe single index model are presented and calculated, for the construction of efficient portfolios from the Istanbul Securities Exchanges’ first market slocks for the 1986 - 1987 period. Constructed efficient portfolios are compared on the risk and return scales.Item Open Access Forecasting the foreign currency prices using the Box Jenkins approach(Bilkent University, 1989) İnan, BelginIn this thesis, the Box Jenkins approach is applied to forecast the future prices of foreign currencies, American Dollar and German Mark, in Turkey’s Black Market using available observations made between the years 1985-1988. The forecasts obtained from this approach are compared to the real available observations. The results show that the Box Jenkins approach is not accurate enough in this case because of the large mean absolute deviation between the forecasted and the observed values of these currencies due to the significant residuals generated in the diagnostic checking stage.Item Open Access A Review of global marketing with an illustration from Turkey(Bilkent University, 1989) Pırnar, İgeGlobal marketing is a new topic in the marketing world. In this work a review of lobal strategy is done and as an illustration a study about four global products, the similarities and dissimilarities among their preferences and finally, liked and disliked factors about the products and their advertisement characteristics we reanalyzed from a global perspective . The study was conducted in Bilkent University and Hacettepe Medical Center.Item Open Access Critical path analysis in project management: An Application(Bilkent University, 1989) Karagöz, Bülent RehaCritical Path Analysis (CPA) in project management has found extensive applications in the last three decades, mainly because it enables the completion of project in the shortest possible time and increases the efficiency. The purpose of this thesis is to explain CPA by means of an application on a construction project, using HTPM software.Item Open Access The Behavior of stock returns in Turkey: 1986-1988(Bilkent University, 1989) Başçı, ErdemThis study investigates distributional and time series behavior of common stock returns in Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) for the period 1986-1988. The distributions of weekly price returns deviate from normality with sharp peaks, heavy tails and positive skewness. These observations are similar to those of United States stock markets but ISE returns have higher means and higher variances. The first order serial dependence is insignificant for most stocks and Box-Jenkins linear forecasting models shows a poor performance. So, published past price information cannot be used to obtain better forecasts of future prices by this model. This observation is in line with the random walk behavior as expected from a weak form efficient market. Applicability of Box-Jenkins models may be questioned however, since variance of returns is not stationary due to a second order dependence. This type of dependence is not against weak form efficiency and is seen in US stock returns as well. To detect any longer term dependence, the test of variance-time function is employed.:· The results indicate significant long term dependence for most stocks and this is against weak form efficiency. The weekly change in trading volume series turns out to be forecastable by univariate Box- Jenkins models and it seems to explain some of the variation in stock price returns.Item Open Access Converting the manual accounting system of a small firm in Turkey to a computer based one(Bilkent University, 1989) Güngör, Ferhat NaciIn this thesis, the conceptual framework of the computer-based accounting information system will be discussed. Then, the framework will be applied to a small firm in iron&steel industry for financial accounting and control, cash receipts and disbursements, sales and purchases system design. For this purpose, a standard package, namely, Dac-Easy accounting version 2.0 will be used.Item Open Access Assembly line balancing problem: Comparison of some heuristic procedures(Bilkent University, 1989) Mete, Hasan AliAssembly line balancing problem can be defined as assigning tasks to an ordered sequence of stations, such that the precedence relations among the tasks are satisfied and some pel- hormarice measure (e.g. toLal idle tune; is opLimized- in this work, some heuristic methods are examined and compared for an 11-element assembly line balancing problem for fixed F-ratios and cycle times. The results of the experiments show that there is no significant difference between the four selected heuristic procedures.Item Open Access "Expressions of emotion" in service encounters(Bilkent University, 1989) Ungan, SeçkinThis study examines the relationship between the "expressions of emotion" and the satisfaction with the service encounter. The empirical proxy for "expressions of emotion" is the nature of the encounter in bars as a psychological phenomenon. Predicted relationship is investigated by comparing the ratings of perceived emotions of bar customers and servers based on semantic differential format, and by exploring open-ended data qualitatively. The results suggest that the expressions of emotions by servers and emotional atmosphere of bars affect the satisfaction of customers with the encounter.Item Open Access ABC Inventory classification application: Özdemirler(Bilkent University, 1989) Duru, MehmetABC inventory classification can result in more effective control of business. In this work, ABC method is applied to Ozdemirler to examine the inventory profile of the store, and to be able to aid the management in allocating control effort among items more effectively.Item Open Access Pooling time series and cross-sectional data: An Application to Turkish export demand analysis(Bilkent University, 1989) Ural, A SüreyyaIn this study. Pooling of time series and cross sectional data is used for constructing a demand model for the Turkish Exports. Two regression models are employed and compared by their fitness to the proposed pooling arrangements and demand relations. 25 Year time series (1963-1985) and cross sectional data covering top 10 exporters from Turkey are used for this purpose. Multiple regression analysis is conducted over different pooling arrangements and properness of pooling and fitness of model is tested by means of a series of F tests.Item Open Access Credit evaluation procedure: An Exploration of the Turkish case(Bilkent University, 1989) Sinay, HarunThe main purpose of this thesis is to eKplore the credit evaluation procedures of two Turkish banks in the light of the obtained samples. In order to determine the similiarities and differences between a British bank and the Turkish banks credit evaluation procedures are compared and contrasted within the before mentioned limitations. A brief litejrature review is presented to show the importance of the financial ratios based on empirical studies. The Turkish procedures are criticised and relevant ftrocedures recommendations are presented at the end of the thesis.Item Open Access Export promoting policies in Turkish manufacturing industry, 1980-1986(Bilkent University, 1989) Özyıldırım, SüheylaThis study basically aims at estimating the significance of export promoting policies for the expansion of Turkish manufacturing exports in the period 1980-86. The price responsiveness of export is also analyzed by evaluating the effects of a decline in labor wages on manufactured exports. In this study, export promoting policies are grouped as export subsidies (tax rebates, export credits and foreign currency allocations) and flexible exchange rate policy (devalmtion of Turkish lira since January 1980). As there is several years of data on a number of manufacturing subsectors, the cross-sectional time series models are used to test the significance of these policies. The tax rebates and forcing currency allocations are the most significant promoting policies affecting exports of manufacturing ii^ustry according to the study’s fii:dings. The devaluation of Turkish lira against dollar and mark has also an encouraging effect on the manufactured exports.Item Open Access A Cost analysis of the auxiliary services of Bilkent University(Bilkent University, 1989) Efe, SamiCost analysis results in more effective decision making by management.
