Item Open Access Disability and the implication of coaccessibility: a case study on accessibility to the media in Turkey(SAGE Publications, 2020) Okyayuz, Ayşe Şirin; Kaya, M.Media accessibility has been an important issue on the international agenda since the early 21st century. Many countries have achieved major developments in media accessibility, while others like Turkey are currently embarking on the journey. The following article discusses developments in media accessibility in Turkey with emphasis on disability and the implication of coaccessibility which may be defined broadly as appealing to audiences with differing accessibility needs, through the translation(s) inputted on a single product. The research so far seems to indicate that coaccessibility has potential political, social, educational and other implications. Turkish end-users embrace the current coaccessibility model, but the ultimate goal in accessibility for Turkey is to have optional sign language interpreting, audio description and subtitling for the D/deaf and hard of hearing and the actors need to strive to achieve this. Currently, it also falls to academics to research this phenomenon of coaccessibility, learn from it, both in terms of the practice itself and its possible implications for universal design, and design for all, and to ensure that end-users and others benefit from it until the day it can be replaced with a better option.Item Open Access De l’intraculturel à l’interculturel: l’opération traduisante: exemples de quelques problèmes rencontrés lors de l’opération de décodage et de transcodage(Les Presses de l'Universite de Montreal, 2007-09) Kaya, M.This study aims to specify the translation problems encountered in the translation of former Turkmen President Saparmourat Türkmenbashi’s ‘Ruhnama’ from the source language into French. In addition to the basic translation problems encountered in the transfer from a source to a target language and the additional problems resulting from the lack of overlap between cultures there are other problems specific to the text typology and languages in this specific translation process: the ‘intralingual’ linguistic problems resulting from the use of varieties/ dialects of the same language and the issue of subcultures within a single language group; syntactic/semantic problems resulting from variation between dialects; sociolinguistic problems resulting from the lack of overlap between different varieties of the same sub culture; and also ideological problems resulting from the author’s style in his effort to convey certain symbols and ideologies. The study exemplifies problems encountered and explains categorization of problem genres and groups through these offering solutions and strategies to guide the translator in the act of translation of such works while stressing the reasons/ reasoning behind the choices.Item Unknown Le jardin des plantes et mon nom est rouge: hypotypose, ekphrasis et thèmes communs(University of Nebraska Press, 2014) Kaya, M.Leurs romans situent respectivement Claude Simon— auteur français, prix Nobel de littérature en 1985— et Orhan Pamuk— auteur turc, prix Nobel de littérature en 2006— parmi les romanciers contemporains les plus novateurs, rejoignant pourtant une tradition remontant aux rhéteurs grecs. Leur écriture, en dialogue étroit avec la peinture d’espaces géographiques/humains réels et l’art de la miniature, combine la créativité exceptionnelle de l’écrivain et du peintre, si bien que Claude Simon illustre, dans Le Jardin des Plantes, le procédé de “l’hypotypose” qui rend vivante la description d’un référent réel au point que le lecteur “voit” ce référent se peindre dans son imagination. Quant à Orhan Pamuk, nous pensons qu’il est un des expérimentateurs de l’Ekphrasis. Cette fi gure de style jouant sur l’illusion visuelle ramène le lecteur, dans Mon nom est Rouge, soit par l’isotopie de la couleur, soit par le champ lexical du pictural, dans un monde oriental coloré et exotique; monde dans lequel le “lisible” devient “visible” grâce à la description réaliste d’un ouvrage d’art. Seeking an alternative solution, we present a hierarchically structured nanofibrous surgical mesh derived from the naturally woven cocoon of the Japanese giant silkworm, termed MothMesh. We report that it displays nontoxicity, biocompatibility, suitable mechanical properties, and porosity while showing no adverse effect in animal trials and even appears to enhance cell proliferation. However, efficient and CO-free hydrogen production through the decomposition of formic acid at low temperatures (<363 K) in the absence of additives constitutes a major challenge. Herein, we present a new heterogeneous catalyst system composed of bimetallic PdAg alloy and MnOx nanoparticles supported on amine-grafted silica facilitating the liberation of hydrogen at room temperature through the dehydrogenation of formic acid in the absence of any additives with remarkable activity (330 mol H2·mol catalyst-1·h-1) and selectivity (>99%) at complete conversion (>99%). Moreover this new catalytic system enables facile catalyst recovery and very high stability against agglomeration, leaching, and CO poisoning. Through a comprehensive set of structural and functional characterization experiments, mechanistic origins of the unusually high catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability of this unique catalytic system are elucidated. Current heterogeneous catalytic architecture presents itself as an excellent contender for clean hydrogen production via room-temperature additive-free dehydrogenation of formic acid for on-board hydrogen fuel cell applications.Item Open Access Nedim Gürsel’in resimli dünya’sından Tımour Muhidine’ İn les turbans de venıse’ine: kültürel ögelerin çevirisi ile ilgili betimleyici bir çalışma(Ürün Yayınları, 2016) İnal, Tanju; Kaya, M.Literary translation and “literary translation criticism” are skills and fields of expertise to be developed within a certain period of time and through practice; these are courses which differ from other specialized translation courses. These courses necessitate the development of a framework towards literary translation. In our study we present ‘successful attempts at literary translation’ that necessitate the use of approaches pertaining to theories such as Toury’s descriptive translation studies and Vermeer’s skopos theory; always keeping in mind our student profiles. In line with this, the study entails the analysis of how features from various cultures from Nedim Gürsel’s multicultural novel Resimli Dünya were transferred in its translation into French as Les Turbans de Venise. However, the surface characteristics of natural chitin in the body of insects are currently understudied. Herein, natural chitin film was successfully produced from bio-waste of insect pupae of the Japanese giant silkworm. Two different surface morphologies of the chitin film were observed. We report for the first time a micropapillary surface structure of chitin which was observed on the dorsal side of the film. To further potential of the micropapillary structured natural chitin in sensing applications, we develop a protocol for generating a nanoscopic film of Ag using thermal evaporation. The Ag-deposited natural chitin films exhibited surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity to an extent depending on the structure of the film. S.; Torun, İ.; Akyüz, L.; Elbüken, ÇağlarPorous, bioactive microspheres have always been a dream material to biomedical scientists for bone regeneration and drug delivery applications due to their interconnectivity, unique pore geometry, encapsulation ability and porosity spanning macroscopic, microscopic and nanoscopic length scales. Extensive efforts have been made to produce such materials synthetically at a great cost of money, time and labor. Herein, naturally-assembled multifunctional, open-channeled and hollow bioactive micro silica spheres (diameter 209.4 ± 38.5 µm) were discovered in a marine sponge (Geodia macandrewii), by peeling the outer surface of the sterrasters using hydrogen fluoride. The obtained micro silica spheres exhibited valuable characteristics such as homogeneously distributed pores, a cavity in the center of the sphere, and channels (approx. 3000) opening from each pore into the central cavity. Simulated body fluid analysis demonstrated the bioactivity of the micro silica spheres; whereas, no bioactivity was recorded for the original untreated sterrasters. The non-cytotoxicity and osteogenic ability of the isolated microspheres were confirmed through osteoblast cell culture. Finally, these silica based porous microspheres were tested for controlled drug release capacity. The spheres showed excellent loading and release abilities for an anti-cancer drug, carboplatin, in simulated solutions and in human cancer cell culture, HeLa, through a real time cell analyzer system. The drug loading capacity of the porous beads was determined as 10.59%. Considering the unique biological and physicochemical properties, these novel bioactive silica spheres, which we name as giant macroporous silica (GMS), are promising materials for a range of applications including bone tissue engineering and drug delivery.Item Open Access Stupeur et Tremblements d’Amélie Nothomb-Croisement de la littérature et du monde des affaires-(Editions L' Harmattan, 2007) Kaya, M.; Inal, T.
