The historical photographic processes known as Cyanotype, Salt print and Vandyke Brown are employed for this project in conjunction with the modern inkjet printer produced digital negatives. As being highly sensitive to the variables during the process, each alternative photographic print exhibits a visual uniqueness. In this aspect, there is conceptual correlation with the visual uniqueness of alternative photographic processes and the visual uniqueness of albinism. Emphasizing the human element in subject, vision and craft of making photographs, this project aims to produce unique photographs of a visually unique subject.Item Open Access Ambivalent and shifting codes of fear and desire in Dracula movies(Bilkent University, 2004) Özkaracalar, KayaThis study, which takes Robin Wood’s methodology to find the answer to the question ‘what does the monster stand for?’ as its base with certain nuances, investigates the ambivalent and shifting sets of connotations embedded in Dracula movies. The main focus is on the sexual and sexuality-related connotations involving fear and desire. A secondary set of connotations related to Otherness attributed to foreign cultures is also investigated. The study aims to delineate the degree and the limits of variance across time and across different cinematic spaces.Item Open Access Animator's hell : an animation inspired by Sartre's other(Bilkent University, 2012) Akgülgil, Nadide GizemAnimation is a form that allows the animator to enter a world of impossibilities. Things that are hard or impossible to show in live action become easier or possible in animation. The animator as a subject animates an object that has no life, soul and movement. So the whole relationship is between the subject and object. French philosopher Sartre, on the other hand, plays with the concepts of subject and object when he constructs his philosophy on existence especially in Other concept. When a man confronts with another one, he puts the other in an object form in his world. As the one does so, the other also does the same, i.e. puts the other in an object form. When they confront and become objects for the other’s world they start judging each other. The Other, for this reason, is hell, according to Sartre. Animator’s Hell is a clay animation, which attempts to integrate Jean Paul Sartre’s concepts of subject - object relations and the Other into animation. It tells the story of an animator who defines an object for her animation but later faces with the fact that it is actually a subject. The characters in the film become hell for each other, and try to be recognized.Item Open Access Another approach to cinema : Bergson minus Deleuze(Bilkent University, 2004) Salman, SeldaIn this work, cinema has been investigated philosophically through the ideas of Henri Bergson and Gilles Deleuze, who uses Bergson’s ideas as a basis in his cinema books The Time-Image and The Movement-Image. To clarify the effect of Bergson in Deleuze’s works, a detailed account of Bergsonian philosophy has been investigated. After stating Bergson’s philosophy, the trace of his philosophical terms are revealed in Deleuze’s cinema books, and thereby a critique of Deleuze’s Bergsonian approach has been developed by pointing out that Deleuze does not consider Bergson’s philosophical terms, which are efficient enough to consider cinema philosophically, and implants his own concepts into Bergsonian approach.Item Open Access An approach of mistrust : the representation of 'paranoia' in the films of Terry Gilliam(Bilkent University, 2001) Pazarbaşı, EceThis study aims at investigating the representation on ‘paranoia’ in the films, 12 Monkeys (1995), Brazil (1985), The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1989), and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), by Terry Gilliam. The paranoid state in the films come into being both in the digesis and in the journey from Terry Gilliam’s vision to the audience. Hence, the movement of paranoia within and out the elements of cinema are taken into consideration.Item Open Access The body unmasked : the uncanny and masked acting(Bilkent University, 2001) Çakmak, GülruThe body is not only a natural conglomeration of different internal organs, but it is also the site around/on/through which narratives of subjectivity are constructed and deconstructed. The Freudian unheimlich, translated into English as ‘the uncanny’, transgresses the rules of signification established by such narratives. This study focuses on a particular play on the site of the body, i.e. the ‘body’ suggested by masked acting. Masked acting takes place within the structure of the uncanny in transgressing the discourse of the transcendent self based on the meaningfulness, expediency and unity of the ‘body’. The case study is the masks designed by Kuzgun Acar for Mehmet Ulusoy’s 1975 Théatre de Libérté production of Bertol Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle.Item Open Access Center vs periphery : visual representation of the party scenes in Yeşilçam melodramas(Bilkent University, 1997) Arslan, SavaşIn this study a particular aspect of melodramas (namely, party scenes) in the heyday of the Turkish cinema, especially between the early 1960s and the mid-1970s, is analyzed. In this respect, the visual representation of the party scenes in a variety of films is taken into consideration with the social context of Turkey on the basis of an antagonism between the center and the periphery. In addition, a formal analysis of the party scenes in the films paves the way to comment on the visual representation of the party youth. Then, this study, in the last instance, aims at deploying the representation of the party youth in Yeşilgam melodramas in relation to the project of Westernization.Item Open Access Cinematic realism and digital special effects in Hollywood cinema(Bilkent University, 1996) Güney, TolgaThis thesis attempts to understand changing conceptions of realism in entertainment cinema by the emergence of digital special effects as an implication of new modes of production in contemporary Hollywood cinema. It focuses on the reflexive, intertextual, and hyperreal characteristics of contemporary Hollywood films. It also includes a brief overview of technological history of special effects in Hollywood cinemaItem Open Access Composition and the uncanny : a methodological account of composition in visual arts(Bilkent University, 2001) Ertem, FulyaThis study aims at giving an account of composition in visual arts by basing itself on the notion of uncanny. In that respect the works of three different surrealist artists, Max Ernst, Giorgio De Chirico, and Joan Miro, will be analysed in terms of their compositional uncanniness, by taking into consideration writers who analysed the uncanniness of these artists’ works. As an addition to those writers’ ideas, the aim of this thesis will be to find some new aspects of compositional uncanny in order to challenge the traditional account of composition in visual arts, as a source of visual resolution into unity.Item Open Access Conceptual artwork as type : an account of dematerialization in conceptual art(Bilkent University, 2011) İz, Mustafa KemalThis thesis explores the concept of dematerialization, which was introduced by Lucy Lippard and John Chandler to art context, by the means of a new characterization of word-based Conceptual artworks as types. Concerning the notion of dematerialization, it is argued that the notion itself is controversial and vague. In order to clarify the notion of dematerialization, a distinction between art-work and art object, which is dematerialized, is executed. Following this distinction, it is claimed that in the context of Conceptual art, the notion of artwork is more proper than the notion of art object. In this respect, art object is taken as the final product or a part of the artwork. Via taking the dematerialization process as a negation of artwork as object qua end product; ephemeral or transient character of Conceptual works; use of words as artistic material into consideration, it is argued that Conceptual artworks are types. It is argued that use of words in Conceptual art is one of the main conditions reinforcing the dematerialization process which can be seen in almost every example of word-based Conceptual artworks. Through this characterization of Conceptual artworks as types, notion of dematerialization is clarified. Finally, it is argued that as the art object dematerializes; in word-based Conceptual artworks, the place of dematerialized art object is replaced by the use of words.Item Open Access The contemporary Turkish poster and its evolution in parallel with the economic structure(Bilkent University, 1992) Yücel, EmrahThe aim of this tliesis is to analyze the development o f the ‘Turkish poster' in connection with the development o f the economic structure and to take a critical look at its contemporaiy problems. This thesis will be supported by the inclusion o f a poster with social content; a genre which I find to be lacking in our country.Item Open Access Corporate identity design: a case study and analysis of the visual identity of Yapı Kredi AŞ(Bilkent University, 1993) Akıncı, MuratThe aim of this study is, within a crical look, to determine deficient aspects and to construct a positive suggestive approach to Yapı Kredi A.Ş’s visual identity with corporate design criteria and views of professionals in the held.Item Open Access Corporate image : a study in establishing visual identity and the analysis of an existing trademark(Bilkent University, 1993) Aydınalp, AlperOrganizations are most of the time distinguished by their identities and consumers decide on a product or a service according to an organization's identity and structure. An organization may reflect its identity in many ways but a trademark is the most economic and clearest way of declaring what the organization stands for. It is a visual statement and may give a concise message about the organization. So trademarks have to be custom designed in order to give the correct message and desired image. Here graphic design becomes essential. For visual definition of an organization, a designer's task is to organize the visual elements by utilizing some design issues. These design issues are utilized to reach unity in the visual forms. In terms of corporate image, a unique trademark will contribute to convey a unique corporate image. Unity is essential for all "visual organizations". When we consider a trademark as a visual statement within "corporate design", its articulation becomes essential. The wrong usage of a trademark may cause various damages to the corporate image. By utilizing the design issues the trademark can be analyzed both as a separate entity and also in terms of corporate design. The analysis of a trademark in corporate design will prove to be successful in conveying the desired image and may contribute to maintain the conveyed image.Item Open Access Creating a presentation format of interactive media for innovative products(Bilkent University, 1994) Sinman, AslıIn this work, an interactive presentation format to give information about an innovative product is developed. Innovation process is also discussed for communication of users and designers. Accessing the original needs of potential users by making them active participants through this interactive presentation is considered. Target audience for the innovative product is defined with analysing them in terms of education, culture, social status, and age. Besides the presentation format, the visual style is designed which should be consistent and visible. Construction of graphics, text and animation elements of the presentation on a two dimensional computer graphics interface and attractive graphic format for receiving participation of the users are studied as well. Newton, a palm sized electronic notebook from Apple is selected as the irmovative product, to be analysed with the defined presentation format. Within the scope of a graphic designer or/and stack designer, a detailed story board of the whole presentation is developed.Item Open Access A critical approach to game studies : analysis of Fallout 3® as an example of non-linear gameplay(Bilkent University, 2010) İnce, Levent Y.Contemporary video games are unlike their pioneering counterparts, almost completely changed in all possible ways ranging from, the hardware that the games are run on to their usage of narrative elements and how one experiences games. They are not just another medium for human expression, rather a phenomenon that combines many elements from different forms and create something unique; a cultural artifact. This thesis aims to approach the field of video game studies, and compile and combine the existent research and establish an improved understanding of the video game as a cultural artifact. It will introduce the world of video games, by explaining the aspects that constitute the phenomenon and compare and contrast the previous attempts to consolidate a framework approaching from different fields of media. Furthermore, by the use of the computer role playing game (cRPG) titled Fallout 3, the study will utilize an analysis of it through the implementation of the methodology and toolsets suggested by researchers such as Espen J. Aarseth and Jesper Juul, and study the subject of nonlinearity and its effects to the gameplay experience, thereby utilizing both a playing analysis and non-playing research. In the course of the study, a general area of game and gameplay will be researched prior to the detailed exemplification of those subjects by using the aforementioned game title.Item Open Access Deconstructionist typography(Bilkent University, 1995) Tansel, SeprenThis thesis probes into how semiotics and deconstructionism on the one hand, technological progress on the other, have challenged typography. It begins with a short historical account of contemporary typography, focusing especially on modernist movement, and then discusses the consequences of digital revolution and the rising postmodern culture for contemporary type and t)q)ography. After explaining the structural approach to language and semiotics, it discusses critiques directed by poststructuralism and particularly deconstructionism. The influence of deconstructionism on typography is examined in detail, especially in the context of developments in digital technology. The contribution of deconstructionist typography is discussed in both graphetic and graphological aspects. How deconstructionist t)T)ography challenges and transforms the conventional dualities of typography, and consequently ofl'er new, open-ended forms of reading and writing, is demonstrated.Item Open Access A design model for the space planning of child care centers(Bilkent University, 1999) Tezel, ElçinSince the activities that children involve provide the attainment of abilities in the developmental fields of the early childhood period, the organization of the space through the activity centers influences the improvements in the developmental fields. The communication between the educators and the designers provides the tools surpass the mismatch between the educational decisions^and their interpretations in the space planning. A design model which provides the integration of educational and architectural expert knowledge through the variables of decision making processes is developed for the interior space planning|of the child care centers. A field research is conducted to examine the variables of the educational applications influential on the planning/with respect to the different plan types. The usage principles, relations of the activity centers and the space characteristics are examined in the research.Item Open Access Design of an interactive sequential graphic system on cyber-space(Bilkent University, 2000) Atasoy, BerkeThe aim of this study is to explore and discuss the possibility of an interactive sequential system on World Wide Web. It is an attempt to formulate a definition for a system, which utilises different mediums like text, image and audio in the standards of World Wide Web with a motive for generating a sequential art product in the cyber-space. The study discusses a software model, which offers a set of actions in which the user can participate in the development process of the system by creating and combining different media.Item Open Access The design of the book as object(Bilkent University, 1997) Steel, Jeremy CharlesThe book is an important cultural product that, as well as being a site in which text and image can be found, is first and foremost a physical object. To access a text there must always be a physical support through which the text is embodied. When this physical support takes the form of a book, it becomes a designed and coercive space. It also becomes a contributor to the ‘polyvocality’ of the text such that rather than the text being a multiplicity, the book as a whole becomes a multiplicity. This habitation of the text by the materiality of the book occurs because the physicality and visuality of the book helps determine readership. It also contributes to the interpretation and meaning that the reader believes the text possesses. The aim of this thesis is to explore and articulate questions as to how the materiality of the book comes to inhabit the text and what the designer’s response should be. It will be argued that designers should declare their presence in their work, that they should design the whole book and not just the cover, and also that they should seek a design that respects cultural diversity and historical change. The core of this thesis is the nine books I have designed. As such, they are my response to the semiotic and semantic load that the materiality of the book brings to the text.
