dc.description.abstractBu çalışma, Osmanlı oryantalizminin İngiliz ve Fransız oryantalizmi ile olan ilişkisine odaklanmaktadır. İngiliz, Fransız ve Osmanlı edebiyatından ve görsel kültüründen seçilen örnekler üzerinden bu bağlar incelenmektedir. Seçilen edebi metinler seyahatnameler ve seyahatname özelliği de taşıyan hibrit metinlerdir. Bu eserler, 19. yüzyılın ikinci yarısı ve 20. yüzyılın ilk çeyreğinden seçilmiştir. Doğu’yu ve Batı’yı bir karşıtlık üzerinden tanımlayan oryantalist sistemin temsilcileri olarak ise İngiliz ve Fransız seyyahlar seçilmiştir. Seçilen metinlerde İngiliz ve Fransız seyyahlar için Doğu, İstanbul ve Edirne’dir. Seçilen Osmanlı metinlerinde ise Doğu, Osmanlı’nın Kuzey Afrika toprakları ve Arap vilayetleridir. Osmanlı’nın kendi Doğu’sunu, kendi toprakları üzerinde oluşturma fikri ise Ussama Makdisi ve Sadık Celal Al- Azm gibi akademisyenlerin düşünceleri üzerinden açıklanmaktadır. Tezin iddiası ise İngiliz ve Fransız seyyahların Doğu’ya atfettiği tembellik, cahillik, şehvet düşkünlüğü ve vahşilik gibi ön yargıların Osmanlı oryantalizminde de çeşitli şekillerde kendisine yer bulduğudur. Osmanlı oryantalizminin bu kalıpları tekrar etmesinin sebebi ise Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun Batılılaşmayı kendi eliyle bu topraklara getirmek istemesi ve bu sayede bu topraklar üzerindeki hakimiyetini meşrulaştırmaktır.en_US
dc.description.abstractThis work focuses on Ottoman orientalism’s relationship between English and French orientalism. These relations are examined through the selected examples from the English, French, and Ottoman literature and visual cultures. The selected literary texts are travel writings and hybrid texts that have travel writing elements. The works that are selected are dated between the second half of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century. The English and French are selected as the representatives of the orientalist system that defines the East and the West by way of contrast. In the selected texts, the English and French travel writers regard İstanbul and Edirne as the East, whereas in the Ottoman texts the east is regarded as the Ottoman Empire’s North Africa lands and Arab provinces. Ottoman’s idea of creating its own East on its own land is explained by the ideas of academics such as Ussama Makdisi and Sadik Celal-Al Azm. This thesis proposes that the prejudice that is shown by the English and French travel writers defining the East with laziness, ignorance, lustfulness, and wildness can also be seen in various shapes and forms in Ottoman orientalism. The reason for the Ottoman’s repeating this pattern is the Ottomans wanting to bring Westernization to these lands and with it, legitimizing its dominance.en_US
