dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstract1946 sonrasında Türkiye çok partili döneme geçmişti. Bu dönemde Kemalizm’e karşı eleştirel tavırlar artmış, 12 Eylül 1980 darbesiyle ise Kemalizm’in ana fikirleri yeniden şekillenmeye başlamıştı. Muammer Aksoy, Kemalizm’i, Atatürk ilke ve inkılaplarını kendine temel alan önemli aydınlarımızdan biridir. 31 Ocak 1990’da siyasi ve ideolojik sebeplerden dolayı faili meçhul bir cinayete kurban gidene kadar 73 yıllık ömrünü araştırmalar yapmaya adamış ve bu kavramları en iyi şekilde korumuştu. Bu araştırmada Aksoy’un yazdığı kitaplarından, oğlu Işık Aksoy’dan öğrenilen kişisel hayatına dair bilgilerden, hem kendisi hem de dönem hakkında yazılmış gazete yazılarından ve yayımlardan bahsedilmiştir. Çok partili döneme geçiş, 1980 darbesi ve sonrasındaki siyasi iklimi incelemek Aksoy’un yaşamı ve suikastini anlamak için önem arz etmektedir. Bu araştırmada Muammer Aksoy’un kişisel hayatı, siyasi kimliği, içinde bulunduğu kuruluşlar, suikasti ve laik Türkiye Cumhuriyeti için gerçekleştirdiği çalışmalar işlenmiştir.en_US
dc.description.abstractTurkey acquired a multi-party system in politics by the end of 1946. The critical manner towards the concept of “Kemalism” had appeared in this period. However, the ideas of Kemalism have re-emerged after the military coup of September 12, 1980. Muammer Aksoy is one of the Turkish intellectuals who have adopted Kemalism, Atatürk’s principles and his revolutionary vision. Aksoy has devoted his life of 73 years to academics and active duty in Turkish law and politics, until his assassination on January 31st, 1990. This research covers Muammer Aksoy’s literary work, information on his personal life provided by his son Işık Aksoy and media coverage about him in the time period. Transition to multi-party system in Turkey, military coup of 1980 and its aftermath, as well as the political environment of the time is crucial to understand Aksoy’s life and assassination. This paper explores Muammer Aksoy’s personal life, political identity, foundations he is associated with, his assasination and his work regarding defending secularism in Turkey.en_US
