Exploring the linguistic aspects of the Turkish language after the reform process, this paper focuses on the changes initiated by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, which were mainly aimed at purifying the Turkish language by removing foreign, primarily Arabic and Persian elements. Before the reform, literacy rates were less than 10%, so the reform aimed to improve this rate by simplifying reading and writing in the language and distancing from Perso-Arabic vocabulary to have a more pure Turkish language. The paper also talks about the role of TDK in these reforms and their debates around religion, national identity, and, most importantly, their politics that altered the language. Despite a vast effort to purify the language, it is evident that foreign words persist in the language, particularly in fields such as science and literature, reflecting languages as complex linguistic identity components rather than simple linguistic entities.
