There was no Communist Party in the Ottoman Empire, but there was socialist thought. In 1920, three years before the establishment of the Republic, a political party under the name Communist was established for the first time. The members and founders of the Communist Party of Turkey lost their lives as a result of their assassination in the Black Sea, and the party was closed with the decision taken by the Assembly. It continued to exist illegally. The Workers' Party of Turkey was founded in 1960 and it was active until the 1980 coup, then became illegal as a result of the 1980 coup. TKP and TİP members came together to establish a legal party in 1987 and established the United Communist Party of Turkey in 1990. A lawsuit was filed by the Constitutional Court with a request for closure 15 days after its establishment, and TBKP was closed exactly one year after its establishment.
