dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractTürkiye yazılı basınında uzun soluklu ve önemli bir yere sahip olan Cumhuriyet Gazetesi özellikle 1996 ve 1997 yılları arasında başörtüsü yasağı ile ilgili yazılı medyada yayımladığı haberleriyle önemli bir yer tutmuştur. Özellikle 1997 yılında ülkede yaşanan post-modern darbe, 1987 yasağından beri süregelen başörtüsü meselesini tekrar alevlendirmiştir. Bu yıllar göz önünde bulundurulduğunda başörtüsü yasağı toplum, siyaset ve medya üçgeninde önemli sonuçlar doğurmuştur. Başörtüsü bazı kesimlerce laiklik karşıtı bir durum olarak görülmüş ve buna karşı çıkılmıştır. Aynı zamanda, başka bir görüş ise bu konuyu hak ve özgürlükler çerçevesinde değerlendirmiş ve başörtüsünün politik bir amaca bağlı kalmayan; dini bir uygulama olduğunu savunmuştur. Bu araştırmada, belirtilen yıllarda başörtüsü yasağı bu çerçevede incelenecek olup farklı görüşler Cumhuriyet Gazetesi üzerinden araştırılacaktır.en_US
dc.description.abstractCumhuriyet Newspaper, which has an important place in the Turkish written media, has taken an important place especially with its News published in the written media about the headscarf ban between 1996 and 1997. Given these years, the ban on headscarves, in particular, has had great effects on society, politics and the media. The headscarf was seen and opposed by some as an anti-secularism situation. At the same time, another opinion evaluated within the framework of rights and freedoms and argued that the headscarf is a religious practice that does not adhere to a political purpose. In the research, it is aimed to examine the attitude of the written media with the news they published in these years along with the example of Cumhuriyet Newspaper, which is one of the newspapers that have an important place in the Turkish written media, based on the evaluation of the history of the headscarf ban in the general framework.en_US
