Item Open Access Assessing usability of virtual reality for basic design education(2018-07) Özgen, Dilay SedaBeing an emerging technology, virtual reality is used in a wide range of fields such as medicine, gaming, psychology and sociology. There are also wide range of researches that compare traditional and digital methodologies in design education. However, in design education, there is a limited research into the implementation of virtual reality (VR). Therefore, this thesis focuses on the usability of virtual reality in design education, especially during problem-solving activity in basic design education. This thesis presents the basic design education literature in terms of digital approaches, virtual reality technologies, usability criteria and also technology acceptance model. In order to to analyze the usability of virtual reality in basic design education, an experimental study conducted with 20 first year interior architecture and architecture students in the Spring semester of 2017-2018 academic year, at Bilkent University. It is found that there is a statistically significant difference in terms of intention to use and perceived enjoyment between the VR group and paper-based group. Moreover, there is also a statistically significant effectiveness difference between of VR and paper-based environment. As a result of that, it is stated that VR can support problem-solving activity of basic design education.Item Open Access Colour as an aid for elderly during visuospatial navigation in a virtual polyclinic environment(2018-09) Süzer, Özge KumoğluIt is well documented that elderly people often have difficulties in finding their way in unfamiliar environments. In this study, it is aimed to explore the usage of colour as visuospatial navigation tool for elderly people with tests in a virtually simulated polyclinic environment. Neutral, warm and cool colour experiment settings were compared to find out the effect of different colours on elderly people’s visuospatial navigation performances by using a head mounted display. The experiment was conducted with 90 participants in three phases; eligibility questionnaires, testing on computer, and presence questionnaire. The findings showed that neutral coloured setting affected participants’ visuospatial navigation performances negatively compared to warm and cool coloured settings. However, there was no significant performance difference between warm and cool coloured environments. In addition to that, when they were asked to reach to the destination point, male participants spent shorter time, did fewer wrong turns, experienced fewer hesitations and travelled shorter distances compared to female participants. Currently, due to the increase in the elderly population, designing well-functioning interior spaces for the elderly has become a more pressing matter. The findings of this study will provide important clues for both interior designers and environmental psychologists.Item Open Access Expanded video: creating an alternative reality through merging 360-degree video and Glitch Art(2018-09) Aydınat, MelihThis thesis investigates the merging of 360-degree video with Glitch Art in a form of ‘Virtual Reality’ experience while creating an alternative reality. The technological development in the field of Virtual Reality made it through daily life. However, this development causes problems such as misidentifying 360-degree video as VR. On the other hand, the rise of Glitch Art aesthetics, what makes it another hot topic of video field. Through merging Glitch Art and 360-degree video, ‘Reciprocal Reality’ project aims to create a VR-like experience while leaving the meaning of it to the spectator, at the same time creating a communication between the artist and the spectator via noise.Item Open Access An interface model for improving the use of space simulation software in architectural design(1998) Şenyapılı, BurcuThere is an ongoing debate on the success of architectural software in meeting the designers' wishes and in being familiar with the way designers design. One dominant belief is that as architectural software introduces a work environment closer to that of the paper-based techniques, the efficiency of the use of such software in the profession will increase. We argue that the use will increase by designing interfaces through which the users will be able to customize the digital environment according to their wishes. This thesis introduces a context-specific interface model to transform a state in the user+need space to a digital aid in the virtual design space. This model incorporates the Customization Scale Menu (CSM) to act with the menu options of the architectural space simulation software. The menu options are customized through the selections made on the CSM by the user. These selections will determine the required level of interaction between the software and the user, thus customizing the digital environment according to the user's needs.Item Open Access Use of virtual environments in interior design education: a case study with VRML(1999) Sagun, AysuCommunicating spatial thought and visual perception is not an easy process. However, introducing virtual worlds into communication and visual perception of complex concepts and information make the process easier. The observer using Virtual Reality (VR) applications navigates within an information environment that increases data awareness and understanding with the help of specific effects such as immersion, presence and interactivity (Dagit, 1993). These capabilities of Virtual Environments (VE) can easily be used for the design education, as well as the designer together with the clients uses them during the design phase. In this way, the students would have the flexibility in the education life since there will be no restriction and limitation in the time and place for following the lectures. Within this context, this thesis investigates the benefits of VE in interior design education using web-based communication. When preparing this application Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML) has been used as a tool which is a language for describing multi-participant interactive simulations, in other words, VE, networked through the Internet. In the study, the logic of how VRML works has been explained including various examples. The design process and navigation in VRML world is experienced. Additionally, virtual libraries for texture, material and furniture are prepared. The research has been concluded with the construction of a sample extension course design for the senior Interior Architecture course: Modular Interior Systems, using VRML.Item Open Access Virtual reality as an educational tool in interior architecture(1997) Aktaş, OrkunThis thesis discusses the use of virtual reality technology as an educational tool in interior architectural design. As a result of this discussion, it is proposed that virtual reality can be of use in aiding three-dimensional design and visualization, and may speed up the design process. It may also be of help in getting the designers/students more involved in their design projects. Virtual reality can enhance the capacity of designers to design in three dimensions. The virtual reality environment used in designing should be capable of aiding both the design and the presentation process. The tradeoffs of the technology, newly emerging trends and future directions in virtual reality are discussed.
