Item Open Access Ahmet Hâşim şiirlerinde zaman(Bilkent University, 2010) Kocabay, HaticePoet and prose writer Ahmet Hâşim (1884-1933), a unique contributor to Modern Turkish Literature, penned down various great works. Although significant amount of scholarly research in the form of memoir and survey has been conducted on his life and unconventional individuality, little work has been done on his poetry. The works of Hâşim are usually associated with symbolism and impressionism. Indeed, most of the work done on his poetry also limit themselves with a similar deduction that his poems are either “symbolist” or “impressionist”. The lack of any profound analysis on how these two movements affected Hâşim’s poetry in the realm of language or what were their contributions to the content in terms of themes has led to a critical blockage. Although in his works he explains his poetics as “poems composed not to be understood but to be heard”, he has still succeeded to preserve his place in the realm of literary criticism as the composer of inconceivable poems. This work aims at analysing the matter of Time in Hâşim’s poetry and attempts to argue what has not been argued so far. It can be considered as a new step in the context of the interpretation of Hâşim’s poetry. Depending on the effects of symbolism and impressionism, two distinct concepts of time prevail in the poetry of Ahmet Hâşim. In symbolist poems the understanding of time is subjective, synchronic and immeasurable whereas in impressionist poems it is objective, measurable and progressive. In symbolist poems, through uncompleted meanings and a wide range of connotations of symbols, “Cyclical Time” is referred. Thus, the theoretical background of the thesis entails some explanation on the key concepts of Bergson’s philosophy of time such as “Durée” and “Memory”. In impressionist poems it can be observed that there are certain sections in which linear time is attempted to be frozen in one frame through the depiction of images and a cinematographic narration. Image as a visual element is a component in these poems with the notion of linear time. The place of image in language plane and its effect on the composition of themes will be analyzed in the context of time.Item Open Access Baudelaire'in çift görünümlü oda'sında yansımalar(Ürün Yayınları, 2004) Sunel, A. Hamitin this research the author translated "La Chambre Double" the fıfth poem in Baudelaire's book of "Petits Poemes en Prose". in this research, the author tries to analyze the poem on the basis of the original poet's system of thought by establishing similarities between the descriptions of the room and some events in life. in both descriptions of the room, the author tries to explain that every word and every sentence reflects a universal point of view of the original poet and that every event correspond with something in the poet's real life. The author, at the same time, wants to know who the idol that foverned imaginary throne of pleasure was. He also wishes to investigate who the spectre and the disguised persons are. Moreover, he attempts to explain why the poet considers the bottle of laudanum an old and dreadful friend and to which events, the description of the room refers.Item Restricted Çağın beğenisi(1956) Yücel, TahsinItem Open Access Dimesions of televisual ontology: the alchemy of time in television(Bilkent University, 1999) Şenova, BaşakDeparting from the social status of television in our time, this thesis investigates the dimensions of televisual ontology by concentrating on television’s basic logic of operation, which is generated by time. By discussing the concept of time and capitalism with relation to television’s logic of operation, this thesis appoints every qualitative and quantitative aspect of television to investigate how they operate and communicate with each other. When the logic of operation of television is considered, a concealed mechanism which, operates underneath the quantitative and the qualitative aspects of television is found. Hence, this mechanism is directed by the movement of time in televisual flow. Therefore, this thesis intents to take over the project of investigating the mentioned mechanism. To demonstrate this mechanism, this thesis also involves a case study, which presents a comparative analysis of Turkish television channels. Consequently, dimensions of the televisual ontology is examined by taking the logic of late -capitalism as the frame of this study.Item Open Access The elevator ride: in fact and fiction(Bilkent University, 2016-05) Mirza, NarjisThe Elevator is the intersection of space, time, and sound. Space that designs a democratic communication and interaction among people from all walks of life, time that is amplified and in motion, and sound, that is in isolation. The focus of this study is to observe the function of elevators in fact and fiction. The actual physical experience of elevators will offer us facts about this mechanical ride, and the fantastical use of elevators in the fictional realm is a story of endless imagination. This paper is accompanied with visual artwork, in the form of a two channel video installation that presents the intervention of an artist, and a camera, inside an elevator.Item Open Access Estimation of a change point in a hazard function based on censored data(Springer New York LLC, 2003) Gijbels, I.; Gürler, Ü.The hazard function plays an important role in reliability or survival studies since it describes the instantaneous risk of failure of items at a time point, given that they have not failed before. In some real life applications, abrupt changes in the hazard function are observed due to overhauls, major operations or specific maintenance activities. In such situations it is of interest to detect the location where such a change occurs and estimate the size of the change. In this paper we consider the problem of estimating a single change point in a piecewise constant hazard function when the observed variables are subject to random censoring. We suggest an estimation procedure that is based on certain structural properties and on least squares ideas. A simulation study is carried out to compare the performance of this estimator with two estimators available in the literature: an estimator based on a functional of the Nelson-Aalen estimator and a maximum likelihood estimator. The proposed least squares estimator turns out to be less biased than the other two estimators, but has a larger variance. We illustrate the estimation method on some real data sets.Item Restricted Gün güne benzer mi ki ?(1982) Karasu, BilgeItem Restricted Is 1980's sociology in the doldrums ?(1986) Collins RandallItem Open Access Melih Cevdet Anday şiirinde zaman(Bilkent University, 2003) Armağan, YalçınCritics have often pointed out that a conception of Time occupies an important place in the poetry of Melih Cevdet Anday (1915-2002), but a comprehensive study has not been undertaken on this subject until the present study. In this thesis, we attempt to analyze the different conceptions of Time employed in Anday’s poetry. The Time conception in his so-called “socialist poems,” which he wrote after the “Garip” [Stranger] period can be clearly observed in the poem “Olsun da Gör” (“Just Wait and See”). The Time conception in this poem is determined with reference to a “golden age utopia” and with it the negative aspects of the existing order are eradicated. In Kolları Bağlı Odysseus (Odysseus Bound), Anday takes as his model the times when human beings used to live in harmony with nature, and he expresses a longing for the understanding of “continuous time,” a characteristic of that period. In this conception of “continuous time,” the concept of ‘history’ is left outside, but the subject cannot rid itself of the logic of history; therefore the conception of Time in the book is transient. The “subject” in the poem “Göçebe Denizin Üstünde” [“On The Nomadic Sea”], expresses the desire to free itself from the idea of the past and the future, and to live in a “continuous present time”. In the poem “Troya Önünde Atlar” [“Horses Before Troy”], which is a continuation of the same perception, the “subject” wants to free itself from the “future”. Anyhow, the “subject” in these poems is aware of the passing time outside itself and feels disturbed about this situation. The conception of Time in these poems is an impossibility, simply because it disregards the memory, by which the past is preserved, and because it makes the future indispensable. Anday, in his novel Raziye, creates a character named “Raziye”, who neither has a memory nor any anxiety of the future. Thus, Anday renders this impossible conception of Time possible through Raziye’s character in a fictional universe. The “subject” in the prose poem “Öğle Uykusundan Uyanırken” [“Waking from the Afternoon Nap”] believes that he gets rid of Time and lives in eternity. Unlike the “subjects” in his other poems, the “subject” in the poem “Güneşte” [“Under the Sun”] accepts the existence of the flowing Time outside itself and is not disturbed by this situation.Item Restricted Millennium sancısı ve zaman(2000) Yücel, ŞükranItem Open Access Mobile times and temporalities: Histories of geomediation of time(SAGE, 2022) Özkul, Didem; Humphreys, LeeThe mobile ontology of locative media and ubiquity of location-aware technologies have led to an explicit focus on “where” and an implicit focus on “when” in geomedia studies. While welcoming this focus, we argue that this spatial bias has led the temporal dimensions of geomedia to be overlooked. Despite the growing interest that draws academic attention to mediation of time and temporal dimensions of media and data practices, there is still limited discussion on time and temporality of geomedia. We aim to fill this gap and open a debate about the temporality of geomedia based on seven oral history interviews that we conducted with mobile media scholars who pioneered in research in mobile phones from late 1990s onwards. These historical accounts include the narratives of how mobile phones were used for time-keeping, synchronizing, presencing, and coordinating everyday life. Hence, this article grounds mediation of time in the histories of geomedia.Item Restricted Neredesin Tanpınar?(1998) Özgül, M. We not only allow the fractional Fourier transform orders to be specified independently for the two dimensions but also allow the input and output scale parameters and the residual spherical phase factors to be controlled. We further discuss systems that do not allow all these parameters to be controlled at the same time but are simpler and employ a fewer number of lenses. The variety of systems discussed and the design equations provided should be useful in practical applications for which an optical fractional Fourier transforming stage is to be employed.Item Restricted Özgürlük ve cennet(1985) Ferhad, HüseyinItem Open Access The poetic geography(Bilkent University, 1999) Türkyılmaz, MürüvvetIn this study, Dada and Surrealism movements are analysed and compared with each other in accordance with historical, social, economical and political conditions. Especially, the techniques of Automatic Writing and Automatic Drawing in Surrealism movement are researched and explained the differences of usage in my works. Dada is analysed as an attitude and the relationship between Dada and my works are handled in the frame of his attitude. This attitude accepts art and life together. The influences of the I. World War bring the exploration of Dada. This exploration implies the feeling of isolation or loneliness in the fragmented geography. The similar conditions are seen n this century which people consume in faster span of life and which all borders have been passed on the map. At this point, Dada attitude and the attitude in my works are analysed on the same level.Item Open Access Radiochemical study of Co2+ sorption on chlorite and kaolinite(Akademiai Kiado Rt., 1999) Shahwan, T.; Erten, H. N.In this work, the sorption behavior of Co(II) ions on natural chlorite and kaolinite as a function of time, concentration and temperature was studied. 60Co radiotracer method and the batch technique were used. The kinetic results indicated that about one day of contact time was enough to achieve equilibrium. The sorption process was described by Freundlich type isotherms. Sorption of Co(II) ions on both clays was found to be endothermic with ΔH(o) (kJ/mol) and ΔS(o) (kJ/mol·K) being 33 and 0.14 for kaolinite and 17 and 0.102 for chlorite, respectively. The magnitudes of the corresponding ΔG(o) values suggest that sorption occur mainly via an ion exchange mechanism on both clays.Item Open Access Reconfiguration of space and time in Sakıp Sabancı Museum by means of new media(Bilkent University, 2017-08) Oğuz, EfkanThis thesis attempts to analyze the discursive transformation of spatio-temporality in the Sakıp Sabancı Museum by means of new media technologies, covering a broad spectrum that ranges from virtual space to technologies that the museum space physically contains. It contextualizes such museological transformation within a broad historical framework.Item Restricted Romanımla sana bir ses verebilsem(2002) Köklü, NuhItem Restricted Show must go on(2001) Sevil, MuharremItem Restricted Şiir dilinde zaman(1965) Mutluay, Rauf
