Item Open Access Analytic modeling of patterned high-Tc superconductive bolometers: film and substrate interface effects(SPIE, 1998) Fardmanesh, Mehdi; Rothwarf, A.Superconducting film and substrate interface effects on the response of superconductive edge-transition bolometers are modeled with a one dimensional thermal model in closed form, for samples with large area patterns compared to the substrate thickness. The results from the model agree with experimental results on samples made of meander line patterned granular YBCO films on crystalline substrates, in both the magnitude and phase of the response versus modulation frequency up to about 100 KHz, the limit of the characterization setup. Using the fit of the calculated frequency response curves obtained from the model to the measured ones, values of the film-substrate and substrate-holder thermal boundary resistance, heat capacity of the superconducting film, and the thermal parameters of the substrate materials could be investigated. While the calculated magnitude and phase of the response of the SrTiO3 substrate samples obtained from the model is in a very good agreement with the measured values, the calculated response of the LaAlO3 and MgO substrate samples deviate slightly from the measured values at very low frequencies, increasing with an increase in the thermal conductivity of the substrate material. Using the fit of the calculated response to the measured values, film-substrate thermal boundary resistances in the range of 4.4* 10-3 to 4.4* 10-2 K-cm2-w-1 are obtained for different substrate materials. The effect of substrate optical absorption in the response of the samples is also investigated.Item Open Access Effect of growth pressure on coalescence thickness and crystal quality of GaN deposited on 4H-SiC(Elsevier, 2010-09-25) Caban, P.; Strupinski, W.; Szmidt, J.; Wojcik, M.; Gaca, J.; Kelekci, O.; Caliskan, D.; Özbay, EkmelThe influence of growth pressure on the coalescence thickness and the crystal quality of GaN deposited on 4HSiC by low pressure metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy was studied. It was shown that growth pressure has an impact on the surface roughness of epilayers and their crystal quality. GaN coalescence thicknesses were determined for the investigated growth pressures. The GaN layers were characterized by AFM and HRXRD measurements. HEMT structures were also fabricated and characterized. Among the growth pressures studied, 50, 125 and 200 mbar, 200 mbar was found to be most suitable for GaN/SiC epitaxy.Item Open Access Effect of the superconductivity transition on the response of YBCO edge transition bolometers(2003) Bozbey, Ali; Fardmanesh, Mehdi; Askerzade, I. N.; Banzet, M.; Schubert, J.Dependence of the phase and magnitude of the response of Y-Ba-Cu-O edge transition bolometers on the superconducting transition is studied. The responses of both large and small area devices were investigated and several anomalies are observed. The response of small area LaAlO3 devices considerably differed from that expected based on the dR/dT curve. This discrepancy is observed to be strongly dependent on the superconducting transition. Both the phase and magnitude/(dR/dT) of the response of the devices showed abrupt changes for below the Tc-onset when measured versus temperature, while the phase variation also showed strong dependence on the modulation frequency. We present the analysis and propose mechanisms responsible for the modulation frequency dependence of the response characteristics versus temperature, within the superconductivity transition region of the devices.Item Open Access Fabrication and characterization of SmCo5/Nb ferromagnetic/superconducting hybrid thin films grown by RF magnetron sputtering technique(Elsevier, 2017) Ongun, E.; Kuru, M.; Serhatlıoğlu, M.; Hançer, M.; Ozmetin, A. E.Ferromagnet/Superconductor (F/S) bilayer hybrids show exclusive states due to the mutual interaction between the superconductor and the underlying ferromagnetic substructures in micron scale. In this work, we aimed to observe the effects of the interaction between superconductivity and magnetism, especially the phenomenon involving the orientation and the size of magnetic stripes has been investigated in a coupled ferromagnetic/superconducting thin-film structure. In the proposed F/S hybrid system by this work, superconducting niobium thin-films were combined with underlying segments of ferromagnetic SmCo5 substructures. 300 nm thick magnetic films fabricated by RF magnetron sputtering techniques were topographically grown in patterns with stripes oriented either transverse to or along the direction of current flow. The elemental and microstructural analyses were conducted by EDX, SEM and GIXRD characterization tools. Low-temperature DC transport measurements were conducted by means of four point probe method in a 9T closed-cycle cryogenic refrigeration system. Transport superconducting properties, transition temperature TC(H) and second critical field HC2(T) were measured in a range of applied magnetic field between H = 0–9 kOe for the hybrid system. The results revealed that the artificial periodic modulation of applied field through preferentially-oriented magnetic stripes could introduce normal and superconducting channels or barriers for the current flow.Item Open Access Freezing transition of the vortex liquid in a layered superconductor(Elsevier Science Publishers B.V., 2001) Davoudi, B.; Kohandel, M.; Tanatar, BilalThe self-consistent theory of Singwi, Tosi, Land, and Sjolander is used to describe the liquid-solid phase in a layered superconductor in the limit of weak interplane correlation effects as would be applicable to BSCCO materials. We calculate the local-field corrections, static structure factor, and pair correlation function and compare our results with other methods. The Hansen-Verlet criterion is used to estimate the freezing temperature of the vortex system.Item Open Access Possibility of superconductivity of two-dimensional electrons on the surface of liquid heliuM, films(Pergamon Press, 1993) Tanatar, Bilal; Hakioǧlu T.We consider the possibility of superconductivity in a system of two-dimensional electrons on the surface of liquid helium films. Taking into account of the interaction between electrons and the surface excitations of liquid helium films-ripplons, within the weak coupling BCS theory, we estimate the superconducting transition temperature for various interaction strengths, film thicknesses, and electron densities. The superconducting transition temperature Tc, under experimentally realizable conditions, is calculated to be a few mK's. © 1993.Item Open Access Temperature dependence of the phase of the response of YBCO edge-transition bolometers: effects of superconductivity transition and thermal parameters(Institute of Physics Publishing, 2003) Fardmanesh, M.; Askerzade, İ. N.The variation of the phase of the response of YBCO edge-transition bolometers on crystalline MgO substrate is found to be dependent on the normal-superconducting transition. The phase of the response for T < Tc increased at low modulation frequencies where the thermal diffusion length into the sample substrate from the top absorbing YBCO film is longer than the substrate thickness. The substrate/cold-head boundary resistance mainly dominates the thermal conductance of our samples at low frequencies. This transition-dependent change of the phase of the response is interpreted to be due to the effects of the order parameter of the YBCO material on the phonon spectrum and hence the determining Kapitza boundary resistance. The phase of the response decreased at high modulation frequencies where the thermal diffusion length into the substrate is less than the substrate thickness. The results of our analytical model for the low modulation frequencies agree well with the measured values for temperatures close to the Tc-zero.
