Item Open Access The analysis of a new entry into the industrial market(1996) Sabaz, SerhatThe use of random co-polymer polypropylene (PP-R) in hot water sanitary systems has grown substantially in Europe over the last five years. It is expected that the numerous benefits of PP-r over other materials will help this trend continue, and expand beyond Europe. Ongoing work on standards and specifications promises to further strengthen PP-r pipes' competitiveness. Therefore, the performance of such a new product is worth investigation. Apart from the PP pipe industry, analyzing the overall performance of the whole sanitary pipe sector (Steel and PP pipe) is as important in order to understand major differences. The aim of this study is to analyze the development of a new entry in the Turkish industrial market at a Turkish company that operates as the six largest producer of longitudinally welded steel pipes in Europe. Throughout this study, the market development of PP-r pipes in Europe and in Turkey, together with the various success factors that have contributed to the substitution of traditional non-plastic pipe solutions with PP-R systems in sanitary tap water installations are also introduced. Afterwards, the steps that necessitate a successful entry from the design to launch and the areas where the company shortfall are identified, a new marketing strategy for a successful penetration is developed, and necessary corrections are made for a better competitive action. Finally, in the conclusion part, the internal (company specific) factors that delayed the success of the new product is conveyed.Item Open Access Introducing global software development in Turkey: Why and how?(IEEE, 2012) Tekinerdoğan, Bedir; Cetin, S.Item Open Access Problem representation for refinement(Springer Netherlands, 1992) Guvenir, H. A.; Akman, V.In this paper we attempt to develop a problem representation technique which enables the decomposition of a problem into subproblems such that their solution in sequence constitutes a strategy for solving the problem. An important issue here is that the subproblems generated should be easier than the main problem. We propose to represent a set of problem states by a statement which is true for all the members of the set. A statement itself is just a set of atomic statements which are binary predicates on state variables. Then, the statement representing the set of goal states can be partitioned into its subsets each of which becomes a subgoal of the resulting strategy. The techniques involved in partitioning a goal into its subgoals are presented with examples. © 1992 Kluwer Academic Publishers.Item Open Access Re-organization of Sümerbank: A Study of strategic responses to environmental change(1989) Erkul, CihanThe new economic environment in Turkey after the 1980 reforms posed strategic challenges to firms. The study of these challenges and of the actual responses of firms to these challenges in the form of new strategies may provide interesting case studies for management theory. In this thesis the strategic responses of a state economic enterprise, Sumerbank, to environmental changes are investigated. Sumerbank's strategy, formulated and implemented after 1982, was successful in many respects. However, it was not possible to procure the funds required for modernization investments because of governmental policies. As a result, the new strategy failed to enhance the profitability and viability of Sumerbank.Item Restricted Soğuk savaş dönemi çekişmelerine bir örnek: U 2 Krizi(Bilkent University, 2018) Gündoğdu, Uğur; Balatlı, Tugay; Yazgan, Bilge Tuğçe; Buyurgan, BoraAmerika ve Sovyet Rusya’yı karşı karşıya getiren, yakın tarihe “U-2 Uçak Krizi” olarak geçen hadisenin ortaya çıkışında iki süper güç arasındaki stratejik mücadele yatmaktadır. Amerika’nın Sovyetlere karşı duyduğu güvensizlik, krizin patlak vermesinde baş etken olarak gösterilmektir. 1 Mayıs 1960 tarihinde Türkiye’den kalkan U-2 casus uçağının Sovyet topraklarında düşürülmesinin etkileri bu projede Türk basınına yansımalarıyla beraber incelenecektir.Item Open Access Supply chain management as the key to a firm's strategy in the global marketplace: trends and research agenda(Emerald, 2015) González-Loureiro, M.; Kiessling, T.; Dabic, M.Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze the intersection of two literature streams: that of strategy and supply chain management (SCM). This review should create a better understanding of “strategic SCM” by focussing on relevant theories in the strategic management field and their intersection with SCM to develop a joint research agenda. Design/methodology/approach – The authors conducted a correspondence analysis on the content of 3,402 articles from the top SCM journals. This analysis provides a map of the intellectual structure of content in this field to date. The key trends and changes were identified in strategic SCM research from 1990-2014 as well as the intersection with the key schools of strategic management. Findings – The results suggest that SCM is key to a successful deployment of strategy for competing in the global marketplace. The main theoretical foundations for research in this field were identified and discussed. Gaps were detected and combinations of theoretical foundations of strategic management and SCM suggest four poles for future research: agents and focal firm; distributions and logistics strategic models; SCM competitive requirements; SCM relational governance. Research limitations/implications – Scholars in both the strategy and the SCM fields continue to search for competitive advantages. Much recent research indicates that strategic SCM can be a critical source for that advantage. One of the limitations of the research is that the analysis does not include every journal that published an article mentioning SCM. However, the 34 journals selected are reputed to be the most influential on SCM and focussed primarily on SCM. Practical implications – The map of the intellectual structure of research to strategic SCM highlights the need to combine different theoretical approaches to the complex phenomenon of SCM. Practitioners should consider the supply chain as an informal organization and should devote time and resources to build a shared advantage across the supply chain. They should also consider the inherent benefits and risks that sharing. Originality/value – The paper demonstrates that strategic SCM needs a balanced and rigorous combination of theoretical approaches to deliver more theory-driven evidences. The research combines both a qualitative analysis and a quantitative methodology that summarizes gaps and then outlines future research from a large sample of articles. This methodology is an original contribution to this field and offers some assistance for enlarging the sample of future literature reviews.Item Open Access To instill fear or love: terrorist groups and the strategy of building reputation(SAGE, 2018) Akçınaroğlu, S.; Tokdemir, EfeWhy does one terrorist group employ actions that win the hearts and minds of its constituency while another resorts to tactics that alienate their support? The paper investigates terrorist groups’ strategy of building reputation in their constituency/in-group population and non-constituency/out-group population. Studying all domestic terrorist groups between 1980 and 2011 with original data, we find that ethnic/religious groups and those with territorial control invest in positive reputation in their constituency as they can minimize the risks of returns. Radical groups and those with cross-border support, however, tend to build negative constituency reputation. While the former type of group has a small constituency, the latter ones can find resources across borders, which reduces their dependency on the constituency. Lastly, we find that terror groups seeking policy concessions avoid building a negative reputation in their non-constituency as this strategy enhances their chances of negotiating with the government.Item Open Access Turkish construction industry in the context of development: a technological perspective(1996) İmre, TijenThe main purpose of this thesis is to analyze the current position of Turkey in the construction industry together with the recent developments in construction technologies. Throughout the thesis, the industry analysis is done at the begining to emphasize the significance of construction as a vital national economic activity and its dynamic role in the process of economic growth and development. This is followed by the analysis of Turkish construction industry considering the recent developments in construction technologies. Finally, several recommendations are proposed within the strategic planning which are very important for the future growth of the Turkish construction industry.Item Open Access Turkish identity: national vs state identity in Turkey and implications for US-Turkey relations(2007) Eide, KaralynThere is an abundance of oversimplified labels about Turkey, and this thesis attempts, with a strong angle toward history and patterns, to look deeper into Turkish identity. It will be argued that Turkey’s founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, packaged for the Turks an identity to which they could subscribe. The various components of this initial identity will be distinguished. The nation and state of Turkey overlapped nearly perfectly in the republic’s early years, and the goal was for them to stay so, with Turkey being a pure nation-state in the true sense of the word, but a detachment has developed. This is Turkey’s identity crisis, more than any political or social polarizations in the country today. American ignorance of Turkey’s identity has encouraged Turkish anti-Americanism. The two countries are supposedly ‘faithful allies’ on the political level, but what is understood (or rather misunderstood) on the public level does much relational harm. Mutual ignorance of each must be overcome between these two countries. The Kurdish problem will be discussed as an example of mutual misunderstanding.
