Item Open Access A design model for the space planning of child care centers(1999) Tezel, ElçinSince the activities that children involve provide the attainment of abilities in the developmental fields of the early childhood period, the organization of the space through the activity centers influences the improvements in the developmental fields. The communication between the educators and the designers provides the tools surpass the mismatch between the educational decisions^and their interpretations in the space planning. A design model which provides the integration of educational and architectural expert knowledge through the variables of decision making processes is developed for the interior space planning|of the child care centers. A field research is conducted to examine the variables of the educational applications influential on the planning/with respect to the different plan types. The usage principles, relations of the activity centers and the space characteristics are examined in the research.Item Open Access Interior design criteria for successful hospital patient rooms(1997) Bilir, SedaIn this study, the design requirements of hospital acute-care patient rooms, which support the recovery and well-being of the patients, are examined. Patients' psycho-spatial needs which may be complementary to the healing effects of the medical treatment and the necessary design requirements related to the room activities are mentioned. With respect to the patients' comfort, hospital stress factors, social interaction, visual and acoustical privacy concerns, considerations related to the patients' need of personalization of space, sense of control, and the other sensory issues are discussed. Furthermore, medical care delivery requirements and the activities which affect the design are explored. In this sense, requirements related to the size and layout of the patient rooms, furniture, accessibility for physically impaired persons, color selection and natural and artificial lighting, heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems, and materials are discussed. Finally, general design criteria for providing successful patient care in hospital rooms are pointed out.
