Item Open Access Activity analysis for assistive systems(2014) İşcen, AhmetAlthough understanding and analyzing human actions is a popular research topic in computer vision, most of the research has focused on recognizing ”ordinary” actions, such as walking and jumping. Extending these methods for more specific domains, such as assistive technologies, is not a trivial task. In most cases, these applications contain more fine-grained activities with low inter-class variance and high intra-class variance. In this thesis, we propose to use motion information from snippets, or small video intervals, in order to recognize actions from daily activities. Proposed method encodes the motion by considering the motion statistics, such as the variance and the length of trajectories. It also encodes the position information by using a spatial grid. We show that such approach is especially helpful for the domain of medical device usage, which contains actions with fast movements Another contribution that we propose is to model the sequential information of actions by the order in which they occur. This is especially useful for fine-grained activities, such as cooking activities, where the visual information may not be enough to distinguish between different actions. As for the visual perspective of the problem, we propose to combine multiple visual descriptors by weighing their confidence values. Our experiments show that, temporal sequence model and the fusion of multiple descriptors significantly improve the performance when used together.Item Open Access An analysis of public policy intervention in the recognition and enforcement of Foreign Family Law judgments under Turkish Private International Law(Centre for Promoting Ideas, 2012) Canyaş, A. B.Respecting the judgments of other states and implementing the requirements of such judgments to the highest degree in the domestic area serves the general interests of international society. In Turkish law, one of the most important interventions which may set aside these interests is Turkish public policy. When it has been concluded that enforcement of a foreign family law judgment is contrary to domestic public policy, its enforcement is to be refused. Revealing when public policy intervention should occur and determining the criteria which require such an intervention are the main purposes of this paper. In this framework, it has been concluded limited and constant public policy intervention contributes to international family law. Another major conclusion is that the Turkish Supreme Court should amend its tendency to stipulate that certain subjects are directly linked to public policy.Item Open Access Architectural sketch recognition(1990) Durgun, Fatoş Bengi; Özgüç, BülentSketch recognition is applied to freehand architectural drawings. Enis; Pearson, T. C.; Tewfik, A. H.An algorithm using speech recognition technology was developed to distinguish pistachio nuts with closed shells from those with open shells. It was observed that upon impact with a steel plate, nuts with closed shells emit different sounds than nuts with open shells. Features extracted from the sound signals consisted of mel-cepstrum coefficients and eigenvalues obtained from the principle component analysis (PCA) of the autocorrelation matrix of the sound signals. Classification of a sound signal was performed by linearly combining the mel-cepstrum and PCA feature vectors. An important property of the algorithm is that it is easily trainable, as are most speech-recognition algorithms. During the training phase, sounds of nuts with closed shells and with open shells were used to obtain a representative vector of each class. During the recognition phase, the feature vector from the sample under question was compared with representative vectors. The classification accuracy of closed-shell nuts was more than 99% on the validation set, which did not include the training set.Item Open Access Cubane cluster surface for pyrimidine nucleobases relaxation: DFT approach(Danishgah-i Azad-i Islami, 2020-12-27) Mirzaei, M.; Hadipour, N.; Gülseren, OğuzDensity functional theory (DFT) approach was employed to investigate relaxation processes of each of pyrimidine nucleobases (NBs); cytosine (C), thymine (T) and uracil (U), at the Cubane Cluster Surface (CCS). The main idea was about providing a material for recognition of NBs, in which a nanostructure form of cubane (CCS) was first generated by optimization process. In the next step, relaxation processes of each of NBs at the surface were investigated to examine the function of such system for NBs recognition. The results indicated that the electronic based molecular properties could work as proper parameters for recognizing such molecular system, in which energy gap (EG) could be referred for the purpose. Measuring EG could help to recognize the complexes of CCS-C, CCS-T and CCS-U from each other. Strength of such complex formations was investigated using values of binding energy (BE); CCS-U > CCS-C > CCS-T. Total results of EG, BE and additional atomic scale properties indicated that the investigated CCS could work very well to recognize U as the characteristic NB of RNA.Item Open Access Cucurbituril-based supramolecular engineered nanostructured materials(Royal Society of Chemistry, 2014-11-03) Gürbüz, S.; Idris, M.; Tuncel, D.Cucurbituril (CB) is a unique macrocycle with a rigid symmetrical structure, which is composed of two identical hydrophilic portals decorated with partially negatively charged carbonyl groups and a hydrophobic cavity. A number of different nanostructured materials, including nanoparticles, nanocomposites, vesicles and rods, have been prepared by taking advantage of the varying cavity size of the CB homologues, their ability to accommodate more than one guest in their cavities, their rigid symmetrical structures, as well as the water solubility of CB7. These nanostructures could find a wide range of potential applications in the areas of self-healing materials, nanomedicine, plasmonics, and nanocatalysis. Here, we review the recent progresses in the synthesis, properties and application of CB-based supramolecular engineered nanostructures, which are either constructed through CB-assisted self-assembly or from post-functionalized-CB homologues.Item Restricted Devlet tiyatrosunda oyuncu olmak: Mithat Erdemli(Bilkent University, 2023) Ürkmez,Batu; Bilgen, Berfin Lara; Gençer, Levent; Balmumcu, Öykü; Kavilcioğlu, SudeBu makalenin amacı Mithat Erdemli örneği üzerinden Devlet Tiyatrolarında oyuncu olma deneyimini incelemektir. This study also aimed to find out whether a difference in students’ pronunciation skills as a result of exposure to audiobooks occurs based on their proficiency levels. Lastly, students’ perceptions about audiobooks and their effectiveness on pronunciation learning and teaching were also investigated in the study. This study was conducted with the participation of 65 students from elementary, pre-intermediate, and intermediate levels at Uludağ University School of Foreign Languages. Among the most problematic phonemes for Turkish EFL learners to pronounce correctly, six phonemes were selected to be explored in the study. Three audiobooks from three different proficiency levels were chosen for the study and participants listened to each of the audiobooks. In order to investigate the effectiveness of audiobooks on pronunciation skills both on sound recognition and production levels of university EFL students, sound recognition and production tests, which were prepared by including the selected problematic phonemes, were administered to the students before and after audiobook listening period. Before and after the audiobook listening session, the students were administered a questionnaire with the intent to find out their perceptions about the effectiveness of audiobooks on their pronunciation. In order to address the second research question which is about the effects of audiobooks on pronunciation skills, the mean values and standard deviations were calculated and compared between the first and second test performances of the students. In order to answer the second research question which is about the effects of audiobooks on pronunciation skills of EFL learners at different level, the test results of the elementary, pre-intermediate and intermediate level students were compared to investigate any difference in the effectiveness of audiobooks on pronunciation skills according to proficiency levels. Analysis of the data revealed that audiobook listening is effective on both recognition and production aspects of pronunciation skills of university EFL students, and it appeared to have a greater effect on pre-intermediate level students than it did on elementary and intermediate level students. The results from the questionnaire showed that students had positive perspectives about audiobooks and their effects on pronunciation. Finally, the study emphasizes the importance of audiobooks, suggesting that teachers can incorporate them as an alternative approach to traditional pronunciation teaching practices.Item Open Access Odour intensity learning in fruit flies(2009) Yarali, A.; Ehser, S.; Hapil F.Z.; Huang J.; Gerber, B.Animals' behaviour towards odours depends on both odour quality and odour intensity. While neuronal coding of odour quality is fairly well studied, how odour intensity is treated by olfactory systems is less clear. Here we study odour intensity processing at the behavioural level, using the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. We trained flies by pairing a MEDIUM intensity of an odour with electric shock, and then, at a following test phase, measured flies' conditioned avoidance of either this previously trained MEDIUM intensity or a LOWer or a HIGHer intensity. With respect to 3-octanol, n-amylacetate and 4-methylcyclohexanol, we found that conditioned avoidance is strongest when training and test intensities match, speaking for intensity-specific memories. With respect to a fourth odour, benzaldehyde, on the other hand, we found no such intensity specificity. These results form the basis for further studies of odour intensity processing at the behavioural, neuronal and molecular level. © 2009 The Royal Society.Item Open Access On connected Boolean functions(Elsevier, 1999) Ekin, Oya; Hammer, P. L.; Kogan, A.A Boolean function is called (co-)connected if the subgraph of the Boolean hypercube induced by its (false) true points is connected; it is called strongly connected if it is both connected and co-connected. The concept of (co-)geodetic Boolean functions is de ned in a similar way by requiring that at least one of the shortest paths connecting two (false) true points should consist only of (false) true points. This concept is further strengthened to that of convexity where every shortest path connecting two points of the same kind should consist of points of the same kind. This paper studies the relationships between these properties and the DNF representations of the associated Boolean functions. ? 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. L.The paper discusses how the white supremacist norms of recognition are essential to the constitution of black vulnerability as a precondition of the white human in Percival Everett’s I Am Not Sidney Poitier. Everett’s novel depicts the extent to which popular culture plays a constitutive role in the cultural governance of black bodies, as he dismantles white hegemonic discursive processes that coerce the black body into performing whiteness. Since racialized body is a script of whiteness, it is important to note that the racial script exposes the discursive exchanges in interracial encounters. The issue of how the whites reproduce the power of whiteness in the process of “scripting” blacks is represented through Everett’s satirical discourse on the everyday white discursive practices: “Parodies of whiteness” demonstrate how the black male protagonist Not Sidney undoes the white power at the moment of the constitution of the disjunctive black self, when Sidney Poitier’s image works against the particularity of Not Sidney’s identity. Whites’ urge to “see” and “recognize” the white-commodified racial paradigm (of Poitier) in Not Sidney who fails to become one, highlights the white mechanisms of power that produce blackness except as a mere “parody of whiteness”. It is in this contradictory space that Everett enables us to confront the issue of whiteness (and of race in general) as mere parody, because everyday performances of blackness (under white policing and surveillance) are as much a parody of blackness as that of whiteness.Item Open Access A review of the "ontology" of photography(2004) Sevimli, ÖnderThis study is the culmination of a speculative attempt to understand and restate the enigma of photography. It aims to supplement the thought of photography with a host of concepts that seem to have escaped the scope of the theoretical critique of photography and photographs. In doing so, it follows the lead of the ‘logic’ of the grapheme and of the event of history to review the position of photography in relation to the language of the logic of being, and investigates whether the time of photography can be held in opposition to ‘real time.’ Consequently, the contexts in which contemporary thought on photography restrict the identity of photography are problematized, and the peculiarities involved in the interaction between photographs and viewers are emphasized in this study.Item Open Access Yabancı unsurlu tüketici sözleşmelerinden doğan uyuşmazlıklarda Türk mahkemelerinin milletlerarası yetkisinin tayini(Ankara Üniversitesi Hukuk Fakültesi, 2014) Bayraktaroğlu-Özçelik, Gülüm5718 sayılı Milletlerarası Özel Hukuk ve Usûl Hukuku Hakkında Kanun, tüketicinin milletlerarası özel hukukta korunması amacına uygun olarak, yabancı unsurlu tüketici sözleşmelerine uygulanacak hukukun (m. 26) ve söz konusu sözleşmelerden doğan uyuşmazlıklarda Türk mahkemelerinin yetkisinin tayinine (m. 45) ilişkin özel nitelikli kurallar öngörmektedir.
