Item Open Access The Cyprus question : latest developments and scenarios(Bilkent University, 2004) Balcı, MehmetThis thesis evaluates the latest developments on the island while focusing on the reasons of why a solution has not been founded on the island up to now. For the Greek Cypriot Side the objective is, including the whole territory of the island, to establish a sovereign Hellenic Republic in which the Turkish Cypriots are in minority status. In order to achieve this objective, they have pursued different strategies through different period of times and tried to use the EU and the UN through their own benefits. As a consequence of this strategy, the Turkish Cypriot side had been seen as an reluctant side in reaching an agreement in international area until the time at which the Annan Plan was put into referendum. In fact, the objective of Turkish side is no more than to come to an agreement providing the equal status that the 1960 treaties envisaged. The Annan Plan is far away from providing this solution, because it is an incomplete draft similar to previous ones. The reason behind the rejection of the Annan Plan by the Greek side in the referendum is the belief that they will be able to obtain more than it by their recognized position as an legitimate government of Cyprus and the EU membership. Unless the international community accepts the equality of the Turkish Cypriots, it would be very difficult to reach a consensus on the island. The future of the island will depend on not only the manner of both sides but also the third partiesItem Open Access Donor-acceptor pair recombination in gallium sulfide(American Institute of Physics, 2000-12-15) Aydınlı, Atilla; Gasanly, N. M.; Goksen, K.Low temperature photoluminescence of GaS single crystals shows three broad emission bands below 2.4 eV. Temperature and excitation light intensity dependencies of these bands reveal that all of them originate from close donor-acceptor pair recombination processes. Temperature dependence of the peak energies of two of these bands in the visible range follow, as expected, the band gap energy shift of GaS. However, the temperature dependence of the peak energy of the third band in the near infrared shows complex behavior by blueshifting at low temperatures followed by a redshift at intermediate temperatures and a second blueshift close to room temperature, which could only be explained via a configuration coordinate model. A simple model calculation indicates that the recombination centers are most likely located at the nearest neighbor lattice or interstitial sites. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. A non-saturating film deposition rate was observed for substrate temperatures above 250 ° C. BN films were charac- terized for their chemical composition, crystallinity, surface morphology, and optical properties. X-ray photoelectron spec- troscopy (XPS) depicted the peaks of boron, nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen at the film surface. B 1s and N 1s high-resolution XPS spectra confirmed the presence of BN with peaks located at 190.8 and 398.3 eV, respectively. As deposited films were polycrystalline, single-phase hBN irrespective of the deposition temperature. Absorption spectra exhibited an optical band edge at ~ 5.25 eV and an optical transmittance greater than 90% in the visible region of the spectrum. Refractive index of the hBN film deposited at 450 ° C was 1.60 at 550 nm, which increased to 1.64 after postdeposition annealing at 800 ° C for 30 min. These results represent the first demonstration of hBN deposi- tion using low-temperature hollow-cathode plasma-assisted sequential deposition technique. © 2014 The American Ceramic Society.Item Open Access Phonon squeezing in superconducting borocarbides(Elsevier BV * North-Holland, 1994) Hakioglu, T.; Ivanov, V. A.; Shumovsky, A. S.; Tanatar, BilalThe recently discovered superconductor LuNi2B2C is investigated in the context of strong electron-electron correlations modulated by a squeezed phonon mode propagating in the perpendicular direction to the layers with longitudinal polarization. The squeezed phonons arise in the anharmonic lattice expansion since the linear electron-phonon interaction vanishes due to the structure of the NiB4 tetrahedra. The observed weak isotope effect and small dependence of Tc on pressure is qualitatively understood within the framework of this model. © 1994.Item Open Access Pressure-induced interlinking of carbon nanotubes(American Physical Society, 2000) Yildirim, T.; Gülseren, O.; Kiliç, Ç.; Çıracı, SalimWe predict new forms of carbon consisting of one- and two-dimensional networks of interlinked single-wall carbon nanotubes, some of which are energetically more stable than van der Waals packing of the nanotubes on a hexagonal lattice. These interlinked nanotubes are further transformed with higher applied external pressures to more dense and complicated stable structures, in which curvature-induced carbon sp3 rehybridizations are formed. We also discuss the energetics of the bond formation between nanotubes and the electronic properties of these predicted novel structures.
