Item Open Access Distance laboratory applications ERRL: A study on radio communication in electronic field(IEEE, 2008-05) Aydın, C. Ç.; Türkmen, G.; Özyurt, E.; Aydın, E. U.; Çaǧıltay, N. E.; Özbek, M. E.; Alparslan, N. Ceren; Kara, A.In the last decade, the effect of internet usage in education is gradually increased. When we look from academic perspective, the new technologies provided alternatives for students learning. As distance education becomes important everyday, the indispensable elements of teaching and education, laboratories must be reachable via remote connection. Consequently, the education that is going to be given to the students will be more flexible with respect to place and time constraints and students can reach laboratory facilities at any time and anywhere not only in lectures and practical hours. In this study, European Remote Radio Laboratory (ERRL) which is a distance remote Radio Frequency (RF) laboratory designed for electrical-electronics students, is described generally. The software architecture, infrastructure and experiment that can be done with a remote connection have been described.Item Open Access Dynamic tuning of plasmon resonance in the visible using graphene(The Optical Society, 2016) Balci, S.; Balci, O.; Kakenov, N.; Atar, F. B.; Kocabas, C.We report active electrical tuning of plasmon resonance of silver nanoprisms (Ag NPs) in the visible spectrum. Ag NPs are placed in close proximity to graphene which leads to additional tunable loss for the plasmon resonance. The ionic gating of graphene modifies its Fermi level from 0.2 to 1 eV, which then affects the absorption of graphene due to Pauli blocking. Plasmon resonance frequency and linewidth of Ag NPs can be reversibly shifted by 20 and 35 meV, respectively. The coupled graphene-Ag NPs system can be classically described by a damped harmonic oscillator model. Atomic layer deposition allows for controlling the graphene-Ag NP separation with atomic-level precision to optimize coupling between them.Item Open Access Energy equipartition and frequency distribution in complex attachments(Acoustical Society of America, 2009) Roveri, N.; Carcaterra, A.; Akay, A.As reported in several recent publications, an undamped simple oscillator with a complex attachment that consists of a set of undamped parallel resonators can exhibit unusual energy sharing properties. The conservative set of oscillators of the attachment can absorb nearly all the impulsive energy applied to the primary oscillator to which it is connected. The key factor in the ability of the attachment to absorb energy with near irreversibility correlates with the natural frequency distribution of the resonators within it. The reported results also show that a family of optimal frequency distributions can be determined on the basis of a variational approach, minimizing a certain functional related to the system response. The present paper establishes a link between these optimal frequency distributions and the energy equipartition principle: optimal frequency distributions are those that spread the injected energy as uniformly as possible over the degrees of freedom or over the modes of the system. Theoretical as well as numerical results presented support this point of view. © 2009 Acoustical Society of America.Item Open Access In-situ focused ion beam implantation for the fabrication of a hot electron transistor oscillator structure(1996) Kaya I.I.; Dellow, M.W.; Bending, S.J.; Linfield, E.H.; Rose P.D.; Ritchie, D.A.; Jones G.A.C.Recent advances using in situ focused ion beam implantation during an MBE growth interruption have been exploited to fabricate planar GaAs hot electron structures without the need for shallow ohmic contacts. This novel fabrication route shows a very high yield and has been used to demonstrate a prototype high-frequency oscillator structure based on electron multiplication in the base layer. Existing devices show transfer factors in excess of unity as well as reversal of the base current at high injection levels, which are the prerequisites for oscillator action. Future improvements in device design are discussed.Item Open Access Inductorless realisation of Chua oscillator(IET, 1995) Morgül, Ö.An inductorless realisation of a Chua oscillator, which exhibits chaotic behaviour is presented. This new realisation consists of the Wien bridge oscillator, coupled in parallel with the same nonlinear resistor used in the standard realisation of a Chua oscillator. This new circuit is shown experimentally to also exhibit similar chaotic behaviour.Item Open Access Nanomechanical motion transducers for miniaturized mechanical systems(MDPI AG, 2017) Kouh, T.; Hanay, M. S.; Ekinci, K. L.Reliable operation of a miniaturized mechanical system requires that nanomechanical motion be transduced into electrical signals (and vice versa) with high fidelity and in a robust manner. Progress in transducer technologies is expected to impact numerous emerging and future applications of micro- and, especially, nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS); furthermore, high-precision measurements of nanomechanical motion are broadly used to study fundamental phenomena in physics and biology. Therefore, development of nanomechanical motion transducers with high sensitivity and bandwidth has been a central research thrust in the fields of MEMS and NEMS. Here, we will review recent progress in this rapidly-advancing area.
