Item Open Access Artistic practice in the aftermath of postmodernism : a case study(Bilkent University, 2017-01) Çelen, İlkerPostmodern discourse is still the dominant factor in the 21st century art production. On the other hand, there have appeared a number of alternative concepts which suggest that the influence of postmodern tendencies on art is diminishing, becoming unable to meet today's realities, or transforming altogether. The common ground among these new concepts is that they postulate a partial return to modernist tendencies such as creativity, originality, and/or uniqueness, without denying the achievements of postmodernism such as deconstruction, open-endedness or interaction, thus creating an oscillation. The thesis aims to examine a selection of recent new media works which are all connected with these new tendencies in one way or another, based on their conceptual backgrounds and/or their aesthetic approach in relation to the evolution of new media. While investigating these artworks by case study approach, the thesis claims that these artworks can be taken as indicators of a new understanding in arts.Item Open Access The construction of beauty by mobile applications(Bilkent University, 2016-09) Baş, BurçakAs a highly complex, intriguing and contested matter incorporating a variety of meanings at different dimensions, beauty has long been of interest to scholars. Prior research that approached beauty as a socially constructed phenomenon has often pointed to the conceptualization of beauty around the normative ideals of whiteness, thinness and youth for the female subject, and mostly focused on and underlined the role of traditional media in reinforcing and disseminating these ideals. As new media constituting a crucial part among the recent developments in digital technologies and characterized by interactivity, mobile applications contemporarily play a role in the construction of beauty with their promise of a novel way to experience beauty. Yet, little interest has been shown in their sociocultural analysis, and both the construction of beauty by mobile applications and the role of interactivity in this construction are yet to be explored. In its aim to redress this gap, this thesis (1) engages in the critical sociocultural analysis of mobile applications by evaluating them as “sociocultural artefacts” and (2) adopts the theoretical framework of The Social Construction of Reality as proposed by Berger and Luckmann (1991) and further follows McLuhan’s (1994) dictum that “the medium is the message” as it focuses on mobile applications in comparison and contrast to the traditional beauty media of magazines and discusses the role and impact of the interactivity of new media as implicated in the construction of beauty by mobile applications.Item Open Access Deterritorialisation of image : mapping out new media(Bilkent University, 2003) Polat, BicanThis study endeavours to elaborate the possibilities that new media would have within the practice of art. Diverging from the pre-existing media, new media emerges as being based on the idea of digitisation. Depending upon the principles of variability and modularity it retains the capacity to link documents, images, sounds and texts in a variety of non-linear paths. The study aims to elaborate on new media within the context of Deleuzian “logic of multiplicities”.Item Open Access 'Imagining mostly harmless ecologies’ : an ethnography based new media project(Bilkent University, 2017-07) Koçak, YağmurThis thesis analyzes the possible collaborations between anthropological knowledge generation processes and production of artworks in new media environments. The accompanying new media project titled ‘Imagining Mostly Harmless Ecologies’ attempts to create a cityscape and focuses on a collective garden to explore and present people’s possibly different ways relating with each other and their environments. Through collecting critical visions, practices and relations in the urban context, it aims to open a space for discussion and communication. New media project aims to contribute to and move further the discussions of the thesis with providing a network of critical visions. The main argument that I discuss is that the possibilities that new media environments propose, diversifies the anthropological knowledge generation and dissemination processes. Also, the collaboration of two disciplines contributes to the political and public features and responsibilities of the artwork by a more attentive and detailed background.Item Open Access Plurality of online intimate partners and its impact on exclusivity of cyber-love(Bilkent University, 2016-05) Tuncez, MeriçOnline courtship practices and the nature of virtual relating have been evolved within the last decades thanks to the introduction of hypermediacy, ubiquitous computing, location awareness, and geosocial tagging that creates an information shadow atop existing physical places that leads to augmented reality. Both material and digital inform each other and viewing online and offline as two separate realms might be ineffective in generating meaningful discussions regarding online matchmaking. Primary research question guiding both video and master’s thesis is How does the plurality of available online intimate partners influence the exclusivity of cyber-love? Implications of the romantic exclusivity in love online are, then, discussed with an autoethnographic research focus through disintegrating the components of exclusivity as to Privacy, Attention, Availability of Partners, Distraction, Multi-Conversing, Commitment and Online Infidelity. Then, new media cases related to Internet Art, Interdisciplinary Research, Blogging, Social Networks, Performance, and Experiment are included along with an extended discussion of the M.F.A. Thesis Project, which in return create hypertextual surfaces of relating and loving in digital postmodernity.Item Open Access Reconfiguration of space and time in Sakıp Sabancı Museum by means of new media(Bilkent University, 2017-08) Oğuz, EfkanThis thesis attempts to analyze the discursive transformation of spatio-temporality in the Sakıp Sabancı Museum by means of new media technologies, covering a broad spectrum that ranges from virtual space to technologies that the museum space physically contains. It contextualizes such museological transformation within a broad historical framework.
