Item Open Access Effect of disorder on magnetic resonance band gap of split-ring resonator structures(Optical Society of American (OSA), 2004) Aydın, K.; Güven, K.; Katsarakis, N.; Soukoulis, C. M.; Özbay, EkmelWe investigated the influence of periodicity, misalignment, and disorder on the magnetic resonance gap of split-ring resonators (SRRs) which are essential components of left handed-metamaterials (LHMs). The resonance of a single SRR which is induced by the split is experimentally demonstrated by comparing transmission spectra of SRR and closed ring resonator. Misaligning the SRR boards do not affect the magnetic resonance gap, while destroying the periodicity results in a narrower band gap. The disorder in SRR layers cause narrower left-handed pass band and decrease the transmission level of composite metamaterials (CMMs), which may significantly affect the performance of these LHMs. © 2004 Optical Society of America.Item Open Access Effects of additional independent noise in binary composite hypothesis-testing problems(IEEE, 2009-09) Bayram, Suat; Gezici, SinanPerformance of some suboptimal detectors can be improved by adding independent noise to their observations. In this paper, the effects of adding independent noise to observations of a detector are investigated for binary composite hypothesistesting problems in a generalized Neyman-Pearson framework. Sufficient conditions are derived to determine when performance of a detector can or cannot be improved via additional independent noise. Also, upper and lower limits are derived on the performance of a detector in the presence of additional noise, and statistical characterization of optimal additional noise is provided. In addition, two optimization techniques are proposed to calculate the optimal additional noise. Finally, simulation results are presented to investigate the theoretical results. © 2009 IEEE.Item Open Access Experimental observation of true left-handed metamaterial(IEEE, 2005) Aydın, Koray; Güven, Kaan; Özbay, EkmelWe report a true left-handed (LH) behavior in composite metamaterials. The magnetic resonance of the SRR structure is demonstrated. Plasma frequency of the LH material is shown to be lower than that of the wires.Item Open Access Experimental results for 2D magnetic resonance electrical impedance tomography (MR-EIT) using magnetic flux density in one direction(Institute of Physics Publishing, 2003) Birgül, Ö.; Eyüboğlu, B. M.; İder, Y. Z.Magnetic resonance electrical impedance tomography (MR-EIT) is an emerging imaging technique that reconstructs conductivity images using magnetic flux density measurements acquired employing MRI together with conventional EIT measurements. In this study, experimental MR-EIT images from phantoms with conducting and insulator objects are presented. The technique is implemented using the 0.15 T Middle East Technical University MRI system. The dc current method used in magnetic resonance current density imaging is adopted. A reconstruction algorithm based on the sensitivity matrix relation between conductivity and only one component of magnetic flux distribution is used. Therefore, the requirement for object rotation is eliminated. Once the relative conductivity distribution is found, it is scaled using the peripheral voltage measurements to obtain the absolute conductivity distribution. Images of several insulator and conductor objects in saline filled phantoms are reconstructed. The L2 norm of relative error in conductivity values is found to be 13%, 17% and 14% for three different conductivity distributions.Item Open Access Fourier transform magnetic resonance current density imaging (FT-MRCDI) from one component of magnetic flux density(IOP Publishing, 2010-05-17) Ider, Y. Z.; Birgul, O.; Oran, O. F.; Arıkan, Orhan; Hamamura, M. J.; Muftuler, L. T.Fourier transform (FT)-based algorithms for magnetic resonance current density imaging (MRCDI) from one component of magnetic flux density have been developed for 2D and 3D problems. For 2D problems, where current is confined to the xy-plane and z-component of the magnetic flux density is measured also on the xy-plane inside the object, an iterative FT-MRCDI algorithm is developed by which both the current distribution inside the object and the z-component of the magnetic flux density on the xy-plane outside the object are reconstructed. The method is applied to simulated as well as actual data from phantoms. The effect of measurement error on the spatial resolution of the current density reconstruction is also investigated. For 3D objects an iterative FT-based algorithm is developed whereby the projected current is reconstructed on any slice using as data the Laplacian of the z-component of magnetic flux density measured for that slice. In an injected current MRCDI scenario, the current is not divergence free on the boundary of the object. The method developed in this study also handles this situation.Item Open Access Frequency optimization in high intensity focused ultrasound(IEEE, 2014-09) Yetik, H.; Arıyurek, Cemre; Bozkurt, A.; Ergun, A. S.In high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) the choice of transducer frequency depends on the target depth and tissue type. At high frequencies attenuation does not permit enough acoustical power to be transmitted to the target whereas at low frequencies the transmitted power is not absorbed efficiently. Hence, there exists an optimum frequency at which the power deposited at the target is maximum. In this study, we verified this relation experimentally using MR compatible focused transducers, ex-vivo tissue samples and magnetic resonance (MR) thermometry. © 2014 IEEE.Item Open Access Investigation of magnetic resonances for different split-ring resonator parameters and designs(Institute of Physics Publishing, 2005) Aydin, K.; Bulu, I.; Guven, K.; Kafesaki, M.; Soukoulis, C. M.; Özbay, EkmelWe investigate the magnetic resonance of split-ring resonators (SRR) experimentally and numerically. The dependence of the geometrical parameters on the magnetic resonance frequency of SRR is studied. We further investigate the effect of lumped capacitors integrated to the SRR on the magnetic resonance frequency for tunable SRR designs. Different resonator structures are shown to exhibit magnetic resonances at various frequencies depending on the number of rings and splits used in the resonators.Item Open Access Labyrinth based left-handed metamaterials and sub-wavelength focusing of electromagnetic waves(SPIE, 2006) Özbay, Ekmel; Bulu, İrfan; Çağlayan, HümeyraWe propose and demonstrate a resonant structure that solves two major problems related to the split-ring resonator structure. These major problems may be stated as the bianisotropy and electric coupling to the magnetic resonance. These two problems introduce difficulties in obtaining isotropic left-handed metamaterial mediums. The resonant structure that we propose here solves both of these problems. We further show that in addition to the magnetic resonance, when combined with a suitable wire medium, the structure that we propose exhibits left-handed transmission band. We further demonstrate the sub-wavelength focusing of electromagnetic waves by use of a two dimensional labyrinth based metamaterial. Our experimental results showed that it is possible to focus the source field with half widths as small as λ/4 by using the labyrinth based metamaterial.Item Open Access Magnetic resonance electrical impedance tomography (MREIT) based on the solution of the convection equation using FEM with stabilization(Institute of Physics Publishing, 2012-07-27) Oran, O. F.; Ider, Y. Z.Most algorithms for magnetic resonance electrical impedance tomography (MREIT) concentrate on reconstructing the internal conductivity distribution of a conductive object from the Laplacian of only one component of the magnetic flux density (∇ 2B z) generated by the internal current distribution. In this study, a new algorithm is proposed to solve this ∇ 2B z-based MREIT problem which is mathematically formulated as the steady-state scalar pure convection equation. Numerical methods developed for the solution of the more general convectiondiffusion equation are utilized. It is known that the solution of the pure convection equation is numerically unstable if sharp variations of the field variable (in this case conductivity) exist or if there are inconsistent boundary conditions. Various stabilization techniques, based on introducing artificial diffusion, are developed to handle such cases and in this study the streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) stabilization method is incorporated into the Galerkin weighted residual finite element method (FEM) to numerically solve the MREIT problem. The proposed algorithm is tested with simulated and also experimental data from phantoms. Successful conductivity reconstructions are obtained by solving the related convection equation using the Galerkin weighted residual FEM when there are no sharp variations in the actual conductivity distribution. However, when there is noise in the magnetic flux density data or when there are sharp variations in conductivity, it is found that SUPG stabilization is beneficial.Item Open Access Microfluidics for reconfigurable electromagnetic metamaterials(AIP Publishing, 2009) Kasirga, T. S.; Ertas, Y. N.; Bayındır, MehmetWe propose microfluidics as a useful platform for reconfigurable electromagnetic metamaterials. Microfluidic split-ring resonators (MF-SRRs) are fabricated inside a flexible elastomeric material by employing rapid prototyping. The transmission measurements performed for mercury-injected MF-SRR exhibits sharp magnetic resonances at microwave wavelengths. We further calculate transmission properties of the MF-SRR array and the effect of electrical conductivity of the liquid inside the channel on the magnetic resonance. The measured results agree well with numerical calculations. Our proposal may open up directions toward switchable metamaterials and reconfigurable devices such as filters, switches, and resonators.Item Open Access Multi-gap individual and coupled split-ring resonator structures(Optical Society of American (OSA), 2008) Penciu, R.S.; Aydin, K.; Kafesaki, M.; Koschny Th.; Özbay, Ekmel; Economou, E.N.; Soukoulis, C.M.We present a systematic numerical study, validated by accompanied experimental data, of individual and coupled split ring resonators (SRRs) of a single rectangular ring with one, two and four gaps. We discuss the behavior of the magnetic resonance frequency, the magnetic field and the currents in the SRRs, as one goes from a single SRR to strongly interacting SRR pairs in the SRR plane. We show that coupling of the SRRs along the E direction results to shift of the magnetic resonance frequency to lower or higher values, depending on the capacitive or inductive nature of the coupling. Strong SRR coupling along propagation direction usually results to splitting of the single SRR resonance into two distinct resonances, associated with peculiar field and current distributions. © 2008 Optical Society of America.Item Open Access Noise enhanced detection in the restricted Bayesian framework(IEEE, 2010) Bayram, Suat; Gezici, Sinan; Poor H.V.Effects of additive independent noise are investigated for sub-optimal detectors according to the restricted Bayes criterion. It is shown that the optimal additional noise can be represented by a randomization of at most M signal values under certain conditions. In addition, a convex relaxation approach is proposed to obtain an accurate approximation to the noise probability distribution in polynomial time. Furthermore, sufficient conditions are presented to determine when additional noise can or cannot improve the performance of a given detector. Finally, a numerical example is presented. © 2009 IEEE.Item Restricted Öncü ve duayen bir radyolog: Tuğrul Pırnar(Bilkent University, 2023) Akıncı, Alp; Bağcı, Alinur; Özemre, İrem; Pırnar, Tuğrul; Yılmaz, DilaraTuğrul Pırnar öncü ve duayen bir Türk radyoloğudur. The absorbers consist of four main layers: a metal back plate, dielectric spacer, and two artificial layers. One of the artificial layers provides electrical resonance and the other one provides magnetic resonance yielding a polarization independent broadband perfect absorption. The structure response remains similar for the wide angle of incidence due to the sub-wavelength unit cell size of the constituting artificial layers. The design is useful for applications such as thermal photovoltaics, sensors, and camouflage. ©2011 Optical Society of America.Item Open Access Photonic magnetic metamaterial basics(Elsevier, 2010-07-21) Alici, K. B.; Serebryannikov, A. E.; Özbay, EkmelIn the present study, we provide a detailed analysis for the study of photonic metamaterials. We demonstrate the polarization and orientation dependent transmission response of split ring resonators at the infrared and visible band. We provided optical measurements only for one case, in which electric component of the incident field was coupled to planar split ring resonator array. We consecutively studied (i) frequency tuning, (ii) effect of resonator density, (iii) shifting magnetic resonance frequency by changing the resonator shape, and (iv) effect of metal loss and plasma frequency. The study provides an overlook for the candidate applications such as the enhancement of power passing through an electrically small hole, negative index metamaterials and optical metamaterial absorbers.Item Open Access Stochastic resonance in binary composite hypothesis-testing problems in the Neyman-Pearson framework(Elsevier, 2012-02-20) Bayram, S.; Gezici, SinanPerformance of some suboptimal detectors can be enhanced by adding independent noise to their inputs via the stochastic resonance (SR) effect. In this paper, the effects of SR are studied for binary composite hypothesis-testing problems. A Neyman-Pearson framework is considered, and the maximization of detection performance under a constraint on the maximum probability of false-alarm is studied. The detection performance is quantified in terms of the sum, the minimum, and the maximum of the detection probabilities corresponding to possible parameter values under the alternative hypothesis. Sufficient conditions under which detection performance can or cannot be improved are derived for each case. Also, statistical characterization of optimal additive noise is provided, and the resulting false-alarm probabilities and bounds on detection performance are investigated. In addition, optimization theoretic approaches to obtaining the probability distribution of optimal additive noise are discussed. Finally, a detection example is presented to investigate the theoretical results.Item Open Access Transmission properties of various split-ring resonator systems(Optical Society of America, 2006) Aydın, Koray; Bulu I.; Güven, K.; Özbay, EkmelWe investigated the magnetic resonance of split-ring resonators (SRR) experimentally.
