Item Open Access Evaluating expert advice in forecasting: Users’ reactions to presumed vs. experienced credibility(Elsevier B.V., 2017) Önkal, Dilek; Gönül, Mustafa Sinan; Goodwin, Paul; Thomson, Mary; Öz, EsraIn expert knowledge elicitation (EKE) for forecasting, the perceived credibility of an expert is likely to affect the weighting attached to their advice. Four experiments have investigated the extent to which the implicit weighting depends on the advisor's experienced (reflecting the accuracy of their past forecasts), or presumed (based on their status) credibility. Compared to a control group, advice from a source with a high experienced credibility received a greater weighting, but having a low level of experienced credibility did not reduce the weighting. In contrast, a high presumed credibility did not increase the weighting relative to a control group, while a low presumed credibility decreased it. When there were opportunities for the two types of credibility to interact, a high experienced credibility tended to eclipse the presumed credibility if the advisees were non-experts. However, when the advisees were professionals, both the presumed and experienced credibility of the advisor were influential in determining the weight attached to the advice.Item Open Access How to teach usage of equipments in a remote laboratory(IEEE, 2007-09) Alparslan, N. Ceren; Özen, M.; Cağiltay, N. E.; Aydın, E.European Remote Radio Laboratory (ERRL) is an e-learning project for students, teachers and technicians of the universities who will use the very important devices of this laboratory remotely. These devices are very expensive to buy and can be broken easily while they have been using by the people who does not really know how to use them professionally. As a solution we have developed an e-learning system which aims to support the ERRL learners while studying on how to use equipments in the system. The system is developed according to the electronic performance support systems (EPSS) approach. An EPSS is a computer-based, well-structured system which improves the performance of individuals. It is an electronic infrastructure that contains, stores and distributes personal (individual) or corporate knowledge to enable people to reach necessary levels of performance in the fastest possible time and with minimum teaching support of other people. This paper discusses how the content for such a system is developed and how this content is interactively used in the EPSS platform. The technical details of the developed EPSS are also discussed in this study. We believe that this paper will help instructional system designers for designing different alternatives to improve learners' performance. © 2007 IEEE.Item Open Access OLSR-aware distributed channel access scheduling for wireless mesh networks(IEEE, 2009-04) Kas, Miray; Körpeoğlu, İbrahim; Karasan, EzhanIn this paper, we present OA-TDMA (OLSR-Aware TDMA), a TDMA based cross-layer channel access scheduling scheme which uses the information collected by the OLSR routing protocol. In OA-TDMA, each node makes decisions in a distributed manner with no central control, using the local information disseminated by the OLSR protocol. The distinctive feature of the OA-TDMA protocol lies in its weighting scheme where OA-TDMA approximates the traffic passing through each node by using the local topology information collected by OLSR. Our simulations on ns-2 confirm the significant performance improvement achieved by the combination of OLSR and OATDMA over other scheduling schemes considered in this paper. ©2009 IEEE.Item Open Access Tarihçilerin bilgi arama davranışları(Türk Kütüphaneciler Derneği, 2007) Birinci, Hatice GülşenTarihi 1940’lı yıllara dayanan kullanıcı araştırmaları içinde 1970’li yıllardan itibaren yer alan tarihçiler, birçok araştırmaya konu olmuştur. We propose a model for web information resources, and a query language SQL-TC (Topic-Centric SQL) to query the model. The model is composed of web-based information resources (XML or HTML documents on the web), expert advice repositories (domain-expert-specified metadata for information resources), and personalized information about users (captured as user profiles, that indicate users’ preferences as to which expert advice they would like to follow, and which to ignore, etc). The query language SQL-TC makes use of the metadata information provided in expert advice repositories and embedded in information resources, and employs user preferences to further refine the query output. Query output objects/tuples are ranked with respect to the (expert-judged and user- preference-revised) importance values of requested topics/metalinks, and the query output is limited by either top n-ranked objects/tuples, or objects/tuples with importance values above a given threshold, or both. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.Item Open Access Unsupervised tissue image segmentation through object-oriented texture(IEEE, 2010) Tosun, Akif Burak; Sokmensuer, C.; Gündüz-Demir, ÇiğdemThis paper presents a new algorithm for the unsupervised segmentation of tissue images. It relies on using the spatial information of cytological tissue components. As opposed to the previous study, it does not only use this information in defining its homogeneity measures, but it also uses it in its region growing process. This algorithm has been implemented and tested. Its visual and quantitative results are compared with the previous study. The results show that the proposed segmentation algorithm is more robust in giving better accuracies with less number of segmented regions. © 2010 IEEE.
