Item Open Access Attitudes, beliefs and challenges of Turkish mathematics teachers while teaching mathematics in a second language(Bilkent University, 2018-05) Yeşilkaya, MerveSome high schools in Turkey provide medium of instruction in English. Mathematics, science and social science courses are taught in English in these schools. This study explored attitudes, beliefs and challenges of high school mathematics teachers who work in institutions where medium of instruction is in English. Furthermore, this study investigated difficulties students face with when they learn Math from Turkish teachers from these teachers‟ perspective. Eight private high schools located in Ankara, Ġstanbul and Erzurum where the medium of instruction is in English were selected as sample and 50 out of 72 teachers participated in the questionnaire from these schools. Of these, five teachers from three private schools located in Ankara were chosen in order to conduct the interview and lesson observations by purposeful sampling method in regards to their questionnaire results. This study utilized mixed-methods approaches. Results of this study were analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative data analysis methods. According to the findings of this study, a majority of Turkish mathematics teachers have negative attitudes towards teaching mathematics lessons in English. According to the general results, some of the factors leading these teachers to have negative attitudes and beliefs are University Exam reality in Turkey, English background and proficiency of teachers, English proficiency of students, mathematics lessons being abstract in nature, students‟ lack of mathematical terminology knowledge and participation of the students in the lessons. According to the interview results, it was found out if the teachers have issues while teaching the lesson in English and the fact that teachers‟ preference of medium of instruction differed depending on the teachers‟ own English levels.Item Open Access Immersed into constant change: usage of generative systems in immersive & interactive installation art(Bilkent University, 2019-12) Bozkurt, AliThis thesis aims to investigate the immersive & interactive installations in terms of bodily experience and cybernetic identity. By touching upon the recent discussions on the generative system design and relational aesthetics, an experiential approach towards user interaction and bodily immersion is obtained. Finally, a discussion is presented towards the meaning and implications of the work.Item Open Access Impacts of the immersive interface design model on the image-spectator interaction in new media(Bilkent University, 2007) Özkul, DidemThis study mainly analyzes the major derive for the spectators to interact with the images in new media in terms of its psychological and physical functions. Firstly, these reasons underlying these functions are examined as derives for the experience of presence. Although the major connotation of the word presence is physical presence, the psychological aspect of presence is also regarded as a part of immersion and interaction in new media. Secondly, The Apparatus Model, which is a transparent interface design model, is analyzed in terms of a tool that improves the interactivity between the spectator and the image in new media. In light of Moholy-Nagy’s Theater of Totality (Moholy-Nagy, 1924) , the depiction of artwork as organism is closely observed and represented through the multi disciplinary aspects of Lignum Vitae, along which the responsiveness of the artwork towards human interaction is explored.Item Open Access A perceptional model to understand immersion(Bilkent University, 2009) Alper, C. ArmağanThe aim of this study is to offer a new model for the concept of immersion based on the process of perception in humans. The motivation behind the study is that although the concept of immersion points to an important experience both in various media and daily life, current approaches to the concept do not provide an analytical framework needed for understanding it. This study offers a cognitive and parameter based model which is based on the perception theory put forward by Henri Bergson in his book Matter and Memory. The model makes possible the analysis of the concept of immersion in terms of various cognitive and physical factors.
