Item Open Access Controlling the photoluminescence of quantum emitters in hexagonal boron nitride by external magnetic fields(IOP Publishing, 2022-10-28) Korkut, Hilal; Sarpkaya, İbrahimThe recent observation of room temperature spin-dependent photoluminescence (PL) emission from hexagonal boron nitride's (h-BN's) defect centers motivates for performing a complementary low-temperature photophysical study of quantum emitters under relatively high magnetic fields. Here, we investigate the PL emission dynamics of h-BN's visible single-photon emitters under an applied out-of-plane magnetic field at cryogenic temperatures. The PL intensity of the emitters in our work strikingly exhibits strong magnetic field dependence and decreases with the increased magnetic field. A substantial decrease in the integrated PL intensity of the emitters by up to one order of magnitude was observed when the applied field is increased from 0 T to 7 T. The observed reversible photodarkening of PL emission due to the applied magnetic field is in very well agreement with the predictions of a recent joint experimental and theoretical study and can happen only if the spin-selective, non-radiative, and asymmetric intersystem crossing transitions proceed from the triplet excited state to the lowest-lying spin-singlet metastable state and from the metastable state to the triplet ground state. Our results not only shed more light on the light emission paths of defect centers in h-BN but also show the use of the magnetic field as an efficient control knob in the development of magneto-optical devices.Item Open Access Hybrid plasmon-phonon polariton bands in graphene-hexagonal boron nitride metamaterials [Invited](Optical Society of America, 2017) Hajian, H.; Ghobadi, A.; Dereshgi, S. A.; Butun, B.; Özbay, EkmelWe theoretically investigate mid-infrared electromagnetic wave propagation in multilayered graphene-hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) metamaterials. Hexagonal boron nitride is a natural hyperbolic material that supports highly dispersive phonon polariton modes in two Reststrahlen bands with different types of hyperbolicity. Due to the hybridization of surface plasmon polaritons of graphene and hyperbolic phonon polaritons of hBN, each isolated unit cell of the graphene-hBN metamaterial supports hybrid plasmon-phonon polaritons (HPPs). Through the investigation of band structure of the metamaterial we find that, due to the coupling between the HPPs supported by each unit cell, the graphene-hBN metamaterial can support HPP bands. The dispersion of these bands can be noticeably modified for different thicknesses of hBN layers, leading to the appearance of bands with considerably flat dispersions. Moreover, analysis of light transmission through the metamaterial reveals that this system is capable of supporting high-k propagating HPPs. This characteristic makes graphene-hBN metamaterials very promising candidates for the modification of the spontaneous emission of a quantum emitter, hyperlensing, negative refraction, and waveguiding. © 2017 Optical Society of America.Item Open Access Microheater-integrated spectrally selective multiband mid-infrared nanoemitter for on-chip optical multigas sensing(American Chemical Society, 2023-11-10) Rahimian Omam, Zahra; Ghobadi, Amir; Khalichi, Bahram; Güneş, Burak; Özbay, EkmelTraditional optical gas sensors often require multiple components such as broadband infrared sources, detectors, and band-pass filters to detect various target gases, resulting in bulky and expensive sensor designs. A streamlined optical gas-sensing platform utilizing a narrowband thermal emitter with a spectrally selective response, capable of accommodating various target gases, has the potential to supplant current bulky designs. Through the on-chip integration of a narrowband metamaterial perfect absorber with a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) heater, a selective infrared source emitter could be designed. In this paper, a multiband metamaterial absorber with resonance modes located at different gas absorption signatures is developed for optical multi-gas-sensing applications. The proposed nanoemitter supports penta-band light absorption through the simultaneous excitation of phononic modes (within the hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) topmost layer) and plasmonic modes (with the spectrally selective underlying metal-insulator-metal (MIM) absorber stack). It achieves five near-perfect sharp absorption resonance peaks compatible with the H2S, CH4, CO2, NO, and SO2 gas absorption signatures in the mid-infrared (MIR) spectral range. This spectrally engineered multiwavelength absorption behavior is achieved by simultaneously coupling the optical phonons (OPhs) and the plasmonic modes in the vicinity of the OPh region of hBN and by exciting plasmonic modes with the help of the spacer (ZnTe: zinc telluride) and the metallic nanogratings. Finally, this low-cost and efficient penta-band absorber is combined with a MEMS-based microheater. The microheater uses a Peano-shaped configuration to provide a highly uniform surface temperature, which is crucial for accurate and reliable gas sensing. The proposed platform demonstrates excellent potential in terms of cost-effectiveness, source-free operation, and suitability for multi-gas-sensing platforms.Item Open Access Nanocomposite glass coatings containing hexagonal boron nitride nanoparticles(Pergamon Press, 2016) Çamurlu, H. E.; Akarsu, E.; Arslan, O.; Mathur, S.Glass coatings composed of SiO2-K2O-Li2O, containing non-modified and fluorosilane modified hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanoparticles, were prepared on stainless steel plates through sol-gel spin-coating method. Coatings were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). 1.3-2.5 μm thick uniform coatings were obtained after curing at 500 °C for 1 h. The coatings adhered well to the steel substrates. It was determined by salt spray tests that the coatings enhance corrosion resistance. The aim of hydrophobic fluorosilane modification of hBN nanoparticles was to enrich hBN quantity on the top surface of the coatings. Coatings containing fluorosilane modified hBN nanoparticles presented slightly lower friction coefficient values than the other coatings.Item Open Access Structural and electronic properties of MoS2, WS2, and WS2/MoS2 heterostructures encapsulated with hexagonal boron nitride monolayers(American Institute of Physics Inc., 2017) Yelgel, C.; Yelgel, Ö. C.; Gülseren, O.In this study, we investigate the structural and electronic properties of MoS2, WS2, and WS2/MoS2 structures encapsulated within hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) monolayers with first-principles calculations based on density functional theory by using the recently developed non-local van der Waals density functional (rvv10). We find that the heterostructures are thermodynamically stable with the interlayer distance ranging from 3.425 Å to 3.625 Å implying van der Waals type interaction between the layers. Except for the WS2/h-BN heterostructure which exhibits direct band gap character with the value of 1.920 eV at the K point, all proposed heterostructures show indirect band gap behavior from the valence band maximum at the Γ point to the conduction band minimum at the K point with values varying from 0.907 eV to 1.710 eV. More importantly, it is found that h-BN is an excellent candidate for the protection of intrinsic properties of MoS2, WS2, and WS2/MoS2 structures.Item Open Access Tunable plasmon-phonon polaritons in anisotropic 2D materials on hexagonal boron nitride(De Gruyter Open, 2020) Hajian, Hodjat; Rukhlenko, I. D.; Hanson, G. W.; Low, T.; Bütün, Bayram; Özbay, EkmelMid-infrared (MIR) plasmon-phonon features of heterostructures composing of a plasmonic anisotropic two-dimensional material (A2DM) on a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) film are analyzed. We derive the exact dispersion relations of plasmon-phonons supported by the heterostructures and demonstrate the possibility of topological transitions of these modes within the second Reststrahlen band of hBN. The topological transitions lead to enhanced local density of plasmon-phonon states, which intensifies the spontaneous emission rate, if the thickness of the hBN layer is appropriately chosen. We also investigate a lateral junction formed by A2DM/hBN and A2DM, demonstrating that one can realize asymmetric guiding, beaming, and unidirectionality of the hybrid guided modes. Our findings demonstrate potential capabilities of the A2DM/hBN heterostructures for active tunable light–matter interactions and asymmetric in-plane polariton nanophotonics in the MIR range.
