Item Open Access A "democratic-conservative" government by pious people: the Justice and Development Party in Turkey(Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 2007) Heper, M.Item Open Access A “Democratic‐Conservative” government by pious people: The Justice and development party in Turkey(Blackwell Publishing, 2006) Heper, Metin; Abu‐Rabi', I. The word “evil” appears with a surprising frequency in Arendt’s work, even though she never wrote a theory of evil and she was not a moralist. Arendt was not a systematic thinker. In this thesis I reconstruct Hannah Arendt’s accounts of evil by presenting them in relation to other fundamental concepts for which Arendt is well-known. My argument is that in order to understand the many nuances of the concept of evil that feature in Hannah Arendt’s body of work we need to look at the relation between evil and freedom. As Arendt’s two notions of freedom (I-can of the new beginning and I-will of the freedom of will) point towards two different conceptualizations of evil (radicality of evil and the banality of evil), it is the reality of evil which serves as the linchpin that helps us see the relation that exists between these two conceptualizations.Item Open Access Kant’s coherent theory of the highest good(Springer, 2021) Vatansever, SaniyeIn the second Critique, Kant argues that for the highest good to be possible we need to postulate the existence of God and the immortality of the soul in a future world. In his other writings, however, he suggests that the highest good is attainable through mere human agency in this world. Based on the apparent incoherence between these texts, Andrews Reath, among others, argues that Kant’s texts reveal two competing conceptions of the highest good, namely a secular and a theological conception. In this paper, I argue that Kant has a coherent conception of the highest good which applies to two different domains, namely the domain of the individual humans and the domain of the human species.Item Open Access Looking towards Europe(Royal Institute of International Affairs, 2002-10) Aydinli, E.; Usul, A. R.There has long been a sense of unreality about relations between Turkey and the European Union. While the Turks largely pretended that they would someday enter the Union, the Europeans pretended that they would allow it to happen. Since it was agreed that such a process would require a great deal of time and major changes, both sides were able to avoid the issue. Europeans could avoid truly serious thinking about Turkish membership, believing Türkey would never be able to meet all the necessary requirements. Many Turks avoided thinking about the realities of membership, suspecting the Europeans would never allow it to come true.Item Open Access Oakeshott's theory of freedom as recognized contingency(SAGE Publications, 2003) Podoksik, E.This article argues that Oakeshott's theory of freedom possesses a greater degree of coherence than is often perceived. Freedom in Oakeshott's philosophy may be defined as 'recognized contingency', combining the notions of a genuine choice of action and of an agent's awareness of having such a choice. Oakeshott employs his notion of freedom in two different contexts. One is the context in which freedom is understood as a concept distinguishing what is conceived as 'human' from what is conceived as 'non-human'. The other context is that of membership in societies, which under certain circumstances can be characterized either by the presence or the lack of freedom. The article argues that, while at first glance Oakeshott's ideas look counter-intuitive, at a deeper level this understanding of freedom is akin to that prevalent in the consciousness of modern liberal societies. © SAGE Publications Ltd.Item Restricted Rethinking the past, rehoping the future(1990) Heilbroner, RobertItem Restricted Sanat ve özgürlük(1956) Başçıllar, SeyfettinItem Open Access Situating islamic existentialism in Turkey: key existentialist concepts in Sezai Karakoç’s works(Bilkent University, 2022-09) Çitler, GözdeThe purpose of this dissertation is to put forward an analytical account that Sezai Karakoç, a conservative Muslim intellectual, author, and one of the founders of the Second New movement in Turkish poetry, created a sui generis characterisation of what this study calls Islamic existentialism in Turkey. An important literary figure of the 20th century, Karakoç utilises the existentialist concepts of death, freedom, authenticity, and isolation while following the Islamic and Sufistic doctrines since he preoccupied himself with the same philosophical questions existentialism asks and attempted to find their answers from a different angle and source, that was Islam. In this study, it is argued that Karakoc professes Islamic existentialism, primarily by stating that it is imperative to (i) overcome the anguish and despair of this life by accepting the reality of death and being willing to move past it to be reunited with Allah as the only Creator; (ii) pursue an authentic life by being a true believer, (iii) achieve the ultimate freedom-seeking for the divine love and by abiding by Islamic principles and rules heralded by the prophets, and (iv) transform the individual’s alienation by attempting to become a soldier of resurrection within Karakoç’s doctrine of the resurrection. While this study does not argue that Karakoç is an existentialist, it does argue that existentialism and its core concepts are resonated in his worldview and thoughts on what a true individual is, how to live an authentic and honest life, how to create the ultimate, Islamic, civilisation, and eventually how to unite with God as a sincere believer. This dissertation aims to contribute to the literature by conceptualising Karakoç’s doctrine of resurrection, encompassing the four concepts of existentialism and the teachings of Islam, which permeated his poems, essays, and worldview as such.Item Restricted The Disciplin of Fact / The Freedom of Fiction ?(1991) King, RichardItem Restricted The Discursive expression of human freedom(1992) Westcott, Malcolm R.Item Restricted Türkiye'de bir caz serüveni: Akbank Caz Festivali(Bilkent University, 2020) Dindar, Tutku; Özköylü, Burak; Karatoprak, Beliz; Akalın, İlayda Melis; Bozkaplan, Zeynep BilgesuCaz müziği toplumsal çatışmaların aynı zamanda kaynaşmaların bir ürünü olarak müzik tarihinde kendini göstermiştir.
