Despite the fact that the Kingdom presents lucrative opportunities for car exporters, Saudi Arabia was the second largest market in the world for Japanese car exporters during the early 1980s. Contends that a number of unique social, economic, environmental, demographic and religious factors make this market highly complex. Success hinges on a clear understanding of the market conditions and on emulating some of the innovative marketing tactics of the successful participants.Item Open Access The challenges facing Eastern Mediterranean gas and how international law can help overcome them(Taylor and Francis, 2021) Stanič, A.; Karbuz, SohbetEnormous natural gas reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean have attracted the attention of the international energy majors. The region, however, remains one of the most under-explored and -exploited regions in the world. Numerous technical, commercial, legal and political challenges need to be overcome for these resources to be exploited and exported. This article examines the key commercial and legal challenges the region faces, and proposes possible ways to overcome these challenges by discussing the international law on the delimitation of maritime boundaries and the customary international law obligations of states in the region to resolve delimitation disputes peacefully, to make every effort to enter into provisional arrangements of a practical nature pending agreement on final delimitation and to refrain from unilaterally exploiting natural resources in disputed maritime zonesItem Open Access Denomination composition of trade and trade balance: evidence from Turkey(Routledge, 2005) Berument, Hakan; Dincer, N.The currency denominations of a country's exports and imports are not necessarily the same. If this is the case, then a change in the exchange rate parity among major currencies will affect the trade balance. The empirical evidence provided from Turkey - where exports are mostly denominated in Euros and imports are mostly denominated in USD - suggests that an appreciation of the Euro against the USD would increase the output in the long-run, appreciate the local currency and improve the trade balance for the 1985:01 2003:07 period. © 2005 Taylor & Francis Group Ltd.Item Open Access Econometric modelling of import demand and export supply in Turkey(Bilkent University, 2001) Çevik, SaygınIn this thesis, I estimate the export supply and import demand equations for Turkey using quarterly data over the period 1989-2000. Unlike the previous studies done for Turkey, in this study the sub-items of the total import demand, namely, intermediate, capital and consumption goods import demand equations are estimated. In empirical analysis, first the cointegration is tested by using two different approaches: Engle-Granger (1987) and Johansen (1991) approach. After finding long-run relationships, error correction models are specified and estimated for export supply and import demand equations respectively. The main conclusion that emerges from empirical results is that foreign trade developments in Turkey are highly dependent on the economic activity and the effects of exchange rate policy on imports and exports appear to be fairly limited.Item Open Access Effects of USD-Euro parity on a small open economy: evidence from Turkey(Routledge, 2008) Berument, Hakan; Yucel, E. M.This study assesses the effect of USD-Euro parity on a small open economy where exports are predominantly denominated in Euros and imports are denominated in USD. Empirical evidence from Turkey suggests that a positive change in the USD value of the Euro appreciates the local currency, decreases inflation and increases output.Item Restricted Epsilon (Kompozit Teknoloji Ve Savunma Sanayii A.Ş.) kuruluşu, gelişimi ve Türkiye’ye katkıları(Bilkent University, 2020) Işlak, Buse Selin; Korkmaz, Cansu; Uğur, Defne; Bakırkaya, Eda; Erdoğan, AnılBu makale, 1999 yılında kurulmuş, günümüzde hem Türkiye'de hem Dünya'da havacılık alanında önemli işlere imza atan Epsilon firması hakkındadır. N.This study investigates the relationship between real exports and exchange rate risk for Turkish firms between 2001 and 2003. Different from earlier studies, the analysis is conducted at the firm level with an exchange rate risk specific to the individual firm. Results show that real exports are negatively impacted by an increase in exchange rate risk. In addition, size of the trade volume and the dependence on domestic market for revenue generation are found to be important for the aforementioned relationship.Item Open Access Exchange rate volatility and exports: a firm-level analysis(Routledge, 2008) Solakoglu, M. N.; Solakoglu, E. G.; Demirag, T.The relationship between real exports and exchange rate volatility is investigated using panel data analysis at the firm level. Results indicate that there is no negative or positive relationship between volatility and real exports. In addition, firm size and level of international activity do not influence the size and significance of the volatility effect on exports. However, there is some evidence that firms use import revenue to lower their exchange rate exposure.Item Open Access Has European customs union agreement really affected Turkey's trade?(Routledge, 2007) Neyaptı, B.; Taşkın, F.; Üngör, M.The numerous discussions regarding the advantages and disadvantages of Turkey's becoming a member of the Customs Union has been inconclusive. The empirical analysis that mostly focus on the changes in the volume of trade without much regard to the conjectural changes have also been insufficient. This study attempts to shed light on this issue in a formal analysis of Turkey's international trade by empirically accounting for the changes before and after the Customs Union Agreement (CUA). In doing so, we explicitly account for the concurrent changes in the macroeconomic environment that may have affected Turkey's trade with the rest of the world. Our empirical findings indicate that CUA has not only positively impacted on Turkey's trade, but also led to changes in the behaviour of both exports and imports with regards to their responsiveness to underlying variables.Item Open Access The Iraq war, Turkey, and renewed caspian energy prospects(Middle East Institute, 2008) Williams, P. A.; Tekin, A.Many have linked the US-led invasion of Iraq to its oil resources, leading some observers to question Caspian energy prospects. This article analyzes how the Iraqi occupation and Caspian oil prospects have been inter-linked, via the evolution of American and Turkish assessments of Iraq and the Caspian region. It shows that, contrary to initial expectations, the occupation of Iraq bolstered the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan project as well as a number of other increasingly significant natural gas export pipelines.Item Open Access Persistency of Turkish export shocks: a quantile autoregression (QAR) approach(Springer, 2016) Berument, Hakan; Dincer, N. N.; Yasar, P.This study analyzes the persistency of total and disaggregated Turkish exports for different shock magnitudes using the quantile autoregression (QAR) method in line with Koenker and Xiao (J Am Stat Assoc 99:775–787, 2004). The results suggest that the persistence of shocks are not similar across different quantiles of Total Exports and disaggregated export sectors, indicating an asymmetry in the case of negative and positive shocks across different export sectors. The persistency behavior of Total Exports as well as Food and Beverages, Chemicals, Basic Metals, Raw Materials, Motor Vehicles and Radio & TV exports are asymmetric to negative versus positive shocks, which cannot be captured by traditional unit root tests. Thus, sound interpretation of QAR results is necessary for policy makers to identify shock characteristics and thereby pursue appropriate policies for overcoming adverse impacts on the economy. © 2015, Springer Science+Business Media New York.Item Open Access A producer survey on Turkish furniture industry(Bilkent University, 1996) Öğün, Emir PolatTurkish furniture industry has been growing steadily since the liberalization of Turkish economy in early 1980’s. However, the industry faces some technological and economical problems which affects the competitiveness of the firms in the global market. The major problems of the firms in the furniture sector is availability and quality of raw materials, and the productivity of labor. Turkish furniture manufacturers can be classified into two categories; small job-shops (workshops) and big firms. Small job-shops are scattered all over the country and their major market is domestic. Whereas big firms market their products domectically, and internationally. In this thesis we have investigasted Turkish furniture industryItem Open Access Turkey: trade policy review(Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Ltd., 2005) Togan, S.The purpose of the paper is to discuss the main issues highlighted in the Trade Policy Review: Turkey 2003. The paper studies first the main developments in Turkey's trade regime and trade performance. Next it discusses Turkish trade policy emphasising the measures affecting imports, exports and foreign direct investment. The paper points out that agriculture is highly protected, and that autonomous reforms have been implemented in some of the services sectors of the economy. Since joining the EU will require Turkey to adopt and implement the whole body of EU legislation - the acquis communautaire in all areas, Turkey needs to liberalise its agricultural and services sectors further. Finally, the paper discusses an issue that has largely been neglected in Trade Policy Reviews. It is the sustainability of current account. The paper stresses that Turkey needs to pay close attention to the sustainability of the current account. © Blackwell Publishing Ltd 2005.Item Open Access Turkey: trade policy review, 2007(Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Ltd., 2010) Togan, S.The purpose of this paper is to discuss the main issues highlighted in the Trade Policy Review: Turkey 2007. The paper studies first the main developments in Turkey's trade regime and trade performance. Next it discusses Turkish trade policy under the headings of measures affecting imports, exports and foreign direct investment. The paper notes that the formation of the 1995 EU-Turkey customs union has contributed to a significant increase in the contestability of domestic markets through infusing predictability, transparency and stability to trade policy as well as by liberalising market access. But free trade in industrial goods between Turkey and the EU could still not be established mainly because of non-tariff barriers and in particular because of the various problems faced in the elimination of technical barriers to trade (TBT). The final section of the paper discusses first the role of standards and conformity assessment in general terms and thereafter evaluates critically the Turkish approach to elimination of TBTs. © 2009 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.Item Open Access Turkish defense industry and undersecretariat for defense industries(Bilkent University, 2007) Kızmaz, EfsunThis thesis analyzed the development of Turkish defense industry and the functions of Undersecreatiat for Defense Industry.
