Item Restricted Bir bienalcinin notları(1995) Hızlan, DoğanItem Restricted Item Open Access A comparison study on sound defects of Bilkent Amphitheatre in terms of intelligibility of the speech(2007) Yilmazer, S.The 4000 seated multi-purpose hall Bilkent Amphitheater is a semi-closed amphitheater with a large volume of 90,000 m3.At the beginning, the amphitheater was designed only for open-air performances. Afterwards it was decided to be roofed with a tensile membrane in order to protect the spectators against atmospheric effects. However, the covered amphitheater was turned into a very resounding and a problematic place with a reverberation time even more than 6 s. when the hall is unoccupied. After that time, some acoustical interventions were implemented, but these have not been sufficient in decreasing the number of problematic areas of echoes and dead spots. In 2000, Akukon Oy Consulting Engineers, Finland, carried out the real-size measurements when the hall was unoccupied, in order to find out the values of different acoustical parameters. In 2004, the computer simulation of the hall for the unoccupied condition was made [2]. In order to test speech intelligibility in the hall, besides the computer simulation and real size measurements, in 2006, articulation testing (AI) was made by using normal hearing listeners in the hall. In this paper, comparison between the measurements and the experimental studies are presented. Results confirm that excessive values of reverberation time cause too much reverberant and liveliness throughout the hall, besides the lack of warmth subjectively. Clarity is undermined by excessive reverberate and the sound becomes blurred. Sound energy are not satisfactory in reflecting the sound sufficiently through the hall and the direct sound becomes insufficient at some locations as back and mid sides.Item Open Access Effect of speech intelligibility on visual short-term memory performance(2007) Kitapci, K.; Yılmazer, Semiha; Erkip F.The aim of this study is to find out effects of speech intelligibility on visual short-term memory performance by testing 34 interior architecture students in three different sound environments. Those sound environments were composed of real office sounds and a speech sample that are mixed to achieve varying STI levels of 'continuous noise', 'masked speech' and 'speech' sound environments [2]. Test procedure had three steps: first questionnaire, computer based short-term memory test and second questionnaire. Results show that there is no significant difference of visual short-term memory performance between varying sound environments, however subjective results derived from questionnaires show that students were distracted most by 'speech' sound environment.Item Restricted Ekonomi politiği aşacak olan sanat(1992) Albayrak, SadıkItem Open Access Fabrication and characterization of liquid metal-based micro-electromechanical DC-contact switch for RF applications(CRC Press, 2012) Çağatay, Engin; Noyan, Mehmet Alican; Damgaci, Y.; Cetiner, B. A.; Bıyıklı, NecmiWe demonstrate that room-temperature liquid metal alloy droplets of Eutectic Gallium Indium (EGaIn) and Gallium Indium Tin alloy (Galinstan) can be actuated using electro-wetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) effect. With the application of 80-100V across the actuation electrode and ground electrode, the metallic liquid droplets were observed to be actuated. We have studied the actuation characteristics using different electrode architectures in open-air configuration as well as in encapsulated microfluidic channel test-beds. The resulting microfluidic DC actuation might potentially be used for RF switching applications.Item Open Access Flexible organic-inorganic core-shell nanofibers by electrospinning and atomic layer deposition(CRC Press, 2012) Kayacı, Fatma; Çağla, Özgit-Akgün; Dönmez, İnci; Bıyıklı, Necmi; Uyar, TamerOrganic-inorganic core-shell nanofibers were fabricated by combining electrospinning and atomic layer deposition (ALD). In the first step, nylon66 (polymeric organic core) nanofibers having different average fiber diameters (∼100 nm, ∼250 nm and ∼650 nm) were electrospun by using different solvent systems and polymer concentrations. In the second step, uniform and conformal layer of zinc oxide (ZnO) (inorganic shell) with precise thickness (∼90 nm) and composition on the round surface of the nylon nanofibers were deposited by ALD. The core-shell nylon66-ZnO nanofibers have shown unique properties such as structural flexibility due to the polymeric core and photocatalytic activity due to the ZnO shell layer.Item Unknown Joint routing, gateway selection, scheduling and power management optimization in wireless mesh networks(Institute of Industrial Engineers, 2012-05) Uzunlar Onur; Gökbayrak, Kağan; Yıldırım, E. A.The third generation (3G) wireless communications technology delivers user traffic in a single step to the wired network via base station; therefore it requires all base stations to be connected to the wired network. On the other hand, in the fourth generation (4G) communication systems, it is planned to have the base stations set up so that they can deliver each other's traffic to a small number of base stations equipped with wired connections. In order to improve system resiliency against failures, a mesh structure is preferred. The most important issue in Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) is that the signals that are simultaneously transmitted on the same frequency channel can interfere with each other to become incomprehensible at the receiver end. It is possible to operate the links at different times or at different frequencies, but this also lowers capacity usage. In this paper, we tackle the planning problems of WMN, using 802.16 (Wi-MAX) protocol, such as deploying a given number of gateway nodes along with operational problems such as routing, management of power used by nodes and scheduling while maximizing the minimum service level provided. In order to be able to apply our results to real systems, we work with optimization models based on realistic assumptions such as physical interference and single path routing. We propose heuristic methods to obtain optimal or near optimal solutions in reasonable time. The models are applied to some cities in Istanbul and Ankara provinces.Item Restricted Mayınlar(1997) Duru, OrhanItem Restricted Mostralık(1998) Duru, OrhanItem Restricted Sanat komiserliği(1995) Oktay, AhmetItem Open Access Segmentation-based extraction of important objects from video for object-based indexing(IEEE, 2008-06) Baştan, Muhammet; Güdükbay, Uğur; Ulusoy, ÖzgürWe describe a method to automatically extract important video objects for object-based indexing. Most of the existing salient object detection approaches detect visually conspicuous structures in images, while our method aims to find regions that may be important for indexing in a video database system. Our method works on a shot basis. We first segment each frame to obtain homogeneous regions in terms of color and texture. Then, we extract a set of regional and inter-regional color, shape, texture and motion features for all regions, which are classified as being important or not using SVMs trained on a few hundreds of example regions. Finally, each important region is tracked within each shot for trajectory generation and consistency check. Experimental results from news video sequences show that the proposed approach is effective. © 2008 IEEE.Item Restricted Tülin Öztürk İnsanlara bakıyor(1982) Turan, GüvenItem Restricted Item Restricted Yüksel Arslan(1997) Duru, Orhan
