Item Open Access Clutter detection algorithms for airborne pulse-Doppler radar(IEEE, 2010) Güngör, Ahmet; Gezici, SinanClutter detection is an important stage of target detection. Clutter may not always appear around zero Doppler frequency when realistic terrain models and moving platforms are considered. Two algorithms developed for clutter detection using range-Doppler matrix elements and their performance analysis are presented in this paper. The first algorithm has higher error rates but lower computational complexity whereas the second one has lower error rates but higher computational complexity. The algorithms detect clutter position by filtering range-Doppler matrix elements via non-linear filters. ©2010 IEEE.Item Open Access Compressive sensing based target detection in delay-doppler radars(IEEE, 2013) Teke, Oguzhan; Arıkan, Orhan; Gürbüz, A.C.Compressive Sensing theory shows that, a sparse signal can be reconstructed from its sub-Nyquist rate random samples. With this property, CS approach has many applications. Radar systems, which deal with sparse signal due to its nature, is one of the important application of CS theory. Even if CS approach is suitable for radar systems, classical detections schemes under Neyman-Pearson formulations may result high probability of false alarm, when CS approach is used, especially if the target has off-grid parameters. In this study, a new detection scheme which enables CS techniques to be used in radar systems is investigated. © 2013 IEEE.Item Open Access Pulse doppler radar target recognition using a two-stage SVM procedure(IEEE, 2010-07-07) Eryildirim, A.; Onaran, I.It is possible to detect and classify moving and stationary targets using ground surveillance pulse-Doppler radars (PDRs). A two-stage support vector machine (SVM) based target classification scheme is described here. The first stage tries to estimate the most descriptive temporal segment of the radar echo signal and the target signal is classified using the selected temporal segment in the second stage. Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients of radar echo signals are used as feature vectors in both stages. The proposed system is compared with the covariance and Gaussian mixture model (GMM) based classifiers. The effects of the window duration and number of feature parameters over classification performance are also investigated. CS approach has applications in many practical areas. One of the areas is radar systems. In this article, the radar ambiguity function is denoised within the CS framework. A new denoising method on the projection onto the epigraph set of the convex function is also developed for this purpose. This approach is compared to the other CS reconstruction algorithms. Bu makalede, radar belirsizlik fonksiyonu (Ambiguity Function) SA çatısı altında gürültüden arındırılmıştır. Bu amaç için dışbükey fonksiyonun epigraf kümesine izdüşüm tabanlı yeni bir gürültüden arındırma metodu geliştirilmiştir. Bu yaklaşım, diğer SA geri çatım algoritmalarıyla karşılaştırılmıştır. Deneysel sonuçlar sunulmuştur.Item Open Access Sparse delay-Doppler image reconstruction under off-grid problem(IEEE, 2014-06) Teke, Oğuzhan; Gürbüz, A. C.; Arıkan, OrhanPulse-Doppler radar has been successfully applied to surveillance and tracking of both moving and stationary targets. For efficient processing of radar returns, delay-Doppler plane is discretized and FFT techniques are employed to compute matched filter output on this discrete grid. However, for targets whose delay-Doppler values do not coincide with the computation grid, the detection performance degrades considerably. Especially for detecting strong and closely spaced targets this causes miss detections and false alarms. Although compressive sensing based techniques provide sparse and high resolution results at sub-Nyquist sampling rates, straightforward application of these techniques is significantly more sensitive to the off-grid problem. Here a novel and OMP based sparse reconstruction technique with parameter perturbation, named as PPOMP, is proposed for robust delay-Doppler radar processing even under the off-grid case. In the proposed technique, the selected dictionary parameters are perturbed towards directions to decrease the orthogonal residual norm. A new performance metric based on Kull-back-Leibler Divergence (KLD) is proposed to better characterize the error between actual and reconstructed parameter spaces. © 2014 IEEE.Item Open Access Successive cancelation approach for doppler frequency estimation in pulse doppler radar systems(IEEE, 2010) Soğancı, Hamza; Gezici, SinanIn this paper, a successive cancelation approach is proposed to estimate Doppler frequencies of targets in pulse Doppler radar systems. This technique utilizes the Doppler domain waveform structure of the received signal coming from a point target after matched filtering and pulse Doppler processing steps. The proposed technique is an iterative algorithm. In each iteration, a target that minimizes a cost function is found, and the signal coming from that target is subtracted from the total received signal. These steps are repeated until there are no more targets. The global minimum value of the cost function in each iteration is found via particle swarm optimization (PSO). Performance of this technique is compared with the optimal maximum likelihood solution for various signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values based on Monte Carlo simulations.
