A design model for the space planning of child care centers

Since the activities that children involve provide the attainment of abilities in the developmental fields of the early childhood period, the organization of the space through the activity centers influences the improvements in the developmental fields. The communication between the educators and the designers provides the tools surpass the mismatch between the educational decisions^and their interpretations in the space planning. A design model which provides the integration of educational and architectural expert knowledge through the variables of decision making processes is developed for the interior space planning|of the child care centers. A field research is conducted to examine the variables of the educational applications influential on the planning/with respect to the different plan types. The usage principles, relations of the activity centers and the space characteristics are examined in the research.

Universal product design involving elderly users: a participatory design model

Recent studies have shown that people prefer to age in their familiar environments, thus guiding designers to provide a safe and functionally appropriate environment for ageing people, regardless of their physical conditions or limitations. Therefore, a participatory design model is proposed where human beings can improve their quality of life by promoting independence, as well as safety, useability and attractiveness of the residence. Brainstorming, scenario building, unstructured interviews, sketching and videotaping are used as techniques in the participatory design sessions. Quality deployment matrices are employed to find the relationships between the elderly user's requirements and design specifications. A case study was devised to apply and test the conceptual model phase of the proposed model.
