The choice of interest rates in project management : the case of time varying interest rates

A study of existing and potential markets and of the technical and economical feasibility of a project, as well as sound finance planning, are indispensable. Economic profitability is the obvious and most important criteria for industrial project evaluation.The choice of interest rates in project management is the purpose of the thesis. The rate of interest should be adopted as discount rate in project evaluation. Because, the rate of interest reflects time preference and the opportunity cost of the possible alternative use of the capital invested. The interest rate is assumed to be constant during the project life in project evaluation techniques. In order to overcome this inability the constant rate should be replaced by time varying interest rates. iv Several forecast models aid project management to predict the valid interest rates in the evaluation. The thesis employs the expected-change forecast model to obtain interest rates for each year during the life cycle. An application of the model to one of the large-scale projects in the Armed Forces, namely modern self-propelled direct support artillery gun- SP2000, is presented in the thesis. Comparison of two alternative uses of interest rates in the calculation of net present value of the project is discussed. It is concluded that the constant interest rate use overstates the costs and it is suggested that the time varying interest rates should be adopted as the optimal discount rates in project management.

Makalede firmanın tarihi, kompozit üretimindeki rolü, önemli ortaklıkları ve Türkiye'nin savunma sektörüne yaptığı katkılardan bahsedilmektedir. Bununla birlikte Türkiye savunma sanayisinin kısa tarihinden, sektördeki açıklıklardan ve kompozit malzemelerinin kullanım sebeplerinden bahsedilmiştir. Faaliyetine tek bir çalışanla model uçak üreterek başlayan Epsilon, günümüzde bazı Dünya firmalarının kritik parçalarının tek üreticisi konumuna gelmiştir ve bu durum ülke ekonomisine de katkı sağlamıştır. Bu makale yazılırken kullanmaya karar verilen yazılı kaynaklar şirket yetkilileriyle yapılan röportajlardan edinilen bilgilerle desteklenmiştir.

Financial growth of the Turkish defense industry : an explanatory analysis

The importance of the Turkish defense firms that sell various products to the Turkish Armed Forces has been gradually increasing in the last decade, especially after the September 11, 2001. Turkey has to pay more attention to the national defense industry, because of the threats and serial crisis in the region. The companies in defense industry have very important role in economy however; decreasing the defense expenditures will accelerate the rate of economic growth. As a result, the strategies for the financial growth of defense firms are very crucial. The purpose of this study is to identify how Turkish Defense Industry financed growth in sales and assets during the fiveyear period and how they should finance growth in order to realize a respectable sustainable growth rate.

Financial performance of Turkish defense firms: a comparative analysis

The importance of the Turkish defense firms that sell various products to the Turkish Armed Forces has been gradually increasing in the last decade. Furthermore, companies in defense industry have an important role in economy. Sales to the Turkish Armed Forces make up about 40% of their total revenues on average. However, the Turkish defense industry has not been examined financially yet, so the main objective of this study is to determine the financial performance of the Turkish defense industry firms by using financial ratios, and compare it with the manufacturing sector. The study period covers from 1994 to 1998, and .seventeen ratios are used in four main categories for 30 firms in category.

The impacts of the Gulf War on the US defense industry

In this study, the military intervention of the U.S to the Gulf Crises is taken as a major event and the impact of this event on the U.S defense stocks is examined by using event study methodology. The sample includes thirty-nine defense firms selected from the U.S Department of Defense top contractors list. The analysis of the abnormal returns on these defense stocks shows that the U.S. military intervention to the Gulf crises affects these stocks significantly and positively both in the short-term and in the long-term. The univariate analysis indicates that stock returns of defense firms are affected differently from this war depending on their defense dependency and market value. There exists a positive relationship between defense dependency and abnormal returns of the defense firms, controlling for the size of the firm.

(TUSAŞ) tarafından kurulan şirketin kuruluş aşamaları ve geçmişi incelenmiş olup 2000’li yıllarda şirketin tamamen yerlileştirilmesi ve TUSAŞ çatısı altında birleştirilmesi üzerinde durulmuştur. Şirketin modern dönemi olarak tanımlanabilecek bu süreçte yaşanan gelişmelerden günümüz şirket yapısına ve projelerinden bahsedilerek şirketin tarihi hakkında detaylı bir çalışma yapılmıştır.

Turkish defense industry and undersecretariat for defense industries

This thesis analyzed the development of Turkish defense industry and the functions of Undersecreatiat for Defense Industry. First, the evolution of defense industries in the world and today’s prospects of these industries were analyzed. Second, the historical background and today’s situation of Turkish defense industry, Turkish procurement process were examined. Third, the role of Undersecretariat for Defense Industries, its legal basis, and its composition were analyzed. It is concluded that Turkish defense industry will be able to produce unique software systems through substantial governmental support. Moreover, SSM is a must both Turkish defense industry and for Turkey’s democratic features.
