Item Open Access Cluster searching strategies for collaborative recommendation systems(2013) Altingovde, I. S.; Subakan, Ö. N.; Ulusoy, ÖzgürIn-memory nearest neighbor computation is a typical collaborative filtering approach for high recommendation accuracy. However, this approach is not scalable given the huge number of customers and items in typical commercial applications. Cluster-based collaborative filtering techniques can be a remedy for the efficiency problem, but they usually provide relatively lower accuracy figures, since they may become over-generalized and produce less-personalized recommendations. Our research explores an individualistic strategy which initially clusters the users and then exploits the members within clusters, but not just the cluster representatives, during the recommendation generation stage. We provide an efficient implementation of this strategy by adapting a specifically tailored cluster- skipping inverted index structure. Experimental results reveal that the individualistic strategy with the cluster-skipping index is a good compromise that yields high accuracy and reasonable scalability figures. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Low cross-polarization, high power capacity, ease of fabrication in microwave bands, and the ability to form arrays make them excellent candidates for phased array antennas in radar applications. However, due to slots being highly resonant (narrow-band, high Q) radiators, their design parameters are very sensitive; hence, accurate design and analysis methods are required for a successful antenna design. Moreover, slotted waveguide array antennas are low-profile structures, which makes them suitable candidates for conformal and structure-integrated applications. Conformal and structure-integrated system solutions are especially required for air platforms, where aerodynamics, radar cross-section (RCS) and efficient use of real estate are of utmost importance. Although the accurate and efficient design and analysis of low-profile conformal slotted waveguide arrays are of great interest, available solution methods in the literature usually suffer in terms of efficiency and memory requirements. Among the available solution methods, one of the widely used solvers are integral equation (IE) based ones that utilize the method of moments (MoM). However, IE solvers suffer from long matrix fill times, especially for matrix entries related to the cylindrically stratified media. © 2014 IEEE.Item Open Access A large-scale sentiment analysis for Yahoo! B.; Weber, I.; Ferhatosmanoğlu, HakanSentiment extraction from online web documents has recently been an active research topic due to its potential use in commercial applications. By sentiment analysis, we refer to the problem of assigning a quantitative positive/negative mood to a short bit of text. Most studies in this area are limited to the identification of sentiments and do not investigate the interplay between sentiments and other factors. In this work, we use a sentiment extraction tool to investigate the influence of factors such as gender, age, education level, the topic at hand, or even the time of the day on sentiments in the context of a large online question answering site. We start our analysis by looking at direct correlations, e.g., we observe more positive sentiments on weekends, very neutral ones in the Science & Mathematics topic, a trend for younger people to express stronger sentiments, or people in military bases to ask the most neutral questions. We then extend this basic analysis by investigating how properties of the (asker, answerer) pair affect the sentiment present in the answer. Among other things, we observe a dependence on the pairing of some inferred attributes estimated by a user's ZIP code. We also show that the best answers differ in their sentiments from other answers, e.g., in the Business & Finance topic, best answers tend to have a more neutral sentiment than other answers. Finally, we report results for the task of predicting the attitude that a question will provoke in answers. We believe that understanding factors influencing the mood of users is not only interesting from a sociological point of view, but also has applications in advertising, recommendation, and search. B.; Okyay, Ali KemalOne of the effective approaches to reduce residual pores in powder metallurgy parts is activated liquid-phase sintering process using proper additives. In this work, for the first time, a new biocompatible additive (Mn-11.5 wt.% Si, a eutectic alloy) is experimented for liquid-phase sintering of nanocrystalline/amorphous P558 stainless steel powders. It is realized that by increasing the sintering aid content and temperature, the density is effectively increased: a sharp densification progress when the sintering temperature increases from 1000 °C to 1050 °C and a slower densification rate when it exceeds 1050 °C. This preliminary study opens up the development of high-density medical-grade stainless steels produced by powder metallurgy, where suitable additives can lower sintering temperature and time, which is promising for retarding grain growth and commercial applications.
