Item Open Access ACMICS: an agent communication model for interacting crowd simulation(Springer, 2017) Kullu, K.; Güdükbay, Uğur; Manocha, D.Behavioral plausibility is one of the major aims of crowd simulation research. We present a novel approach that simulates communication between the agents and assess its influence on overall crowd behavior. Our formulation uses a communication model that tends to simulate human-like communication capability. The underlying formulation is based on a message structure that corresponds to a simplified version of Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents Agent Communication Language Message Structure Specification. Our algorithm distinguishes between low- and high-level communication tasks so that ACMICS can be easily extended and employed in new simulation scenarios. We highlight the performance of our communication model on different crowd simulation scenarios. We also extend our approach to model evacuation behavior in unknown environments. Overall, our communication model has a small runtime overhead and can be used for interactive simulation with tens or hundreds of agents. © 2017, The Author(s).Item Open Access Creating crowd variation with the OCEAN personality model(IFAAMAS, 2008-05) Durupınar, Funda; Allbeck, J.; Pelechano, N.; Badler, N.Most current crowd simulators animate homogeneous crowds, but include underlying parameters that can be tuned to create variations within the crowd. These parameters, however, are specific to the crowd models and may be difficult for an animator or naive user to use. We propose mapping these parameters to personality traits. In this paper, we extend the HiDAC (High-Density Autonomous Crowds) system by providing each agent with a personality model in order to examine how the emergent behavior of the crowd is affected. We use the OCEAN personality model as a basis for agent psychology. To each personality trait we associate nominal behaviors; thus, specifying personality for an agent leads to an automation of the low-level parameter tuning process. We describe a plausible mapping from personality traits to existing behavior types and analyze the overall emergent crowd behaviors. All rights reserved.Item Open Access Effects of color pairs on warmth perception in interiors(Society for Imaging Science and Technology, 2016-09) Ulusoy, B.; Olguntürk, N.Warmth perception is a physical, emotional, semantic, and sensorial bond between people and their environments. Although the effects of single colors have been explored, there has been no research on how paired colors affect warmth perception in interiors. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to investigate these effects of colors and color pairs. Each model was assessed by 32 participants, totaling 96 different participants assessed the color models (Red, White, Green, and their pairs) under controlled conditions, both on a seven-point semantic differential scale and through open-ended questions. The results show that both single colors and paired colors affect warmth perception in interiors. White, Green, and Red are warmer than each other, respectively. Red appears to increase and White appears to decrease the warmth perception of their pairs in interiors. Another important finding of the study is that there is no effect of color location in paired colors. © Society for Imaging Science and Technology 2016.Item Open Access An experimental study on speech interference in public leisure spaces(Institute of Noise Control Engineering, 2010) Yilmazer, Semiha; Gezginer, Pelin MeriçPhysical comfort requirements of users in the non-acoustical spaces, leisure space, and usability of the space in long-term period should be taken into consideration in terms of sustainability of the space. The aim of this study is to investigate the speech interference of users' in an openplaned public leisure space. Bilkent Rollhouse was chosen as a leisure space because of its variance of activities in an open-plan like bowling, dart, billiards, play station and dining area. In this respect, a questionnaire was prepared to check the perception of sound of different user types in the area. The questionnaires were applied at the most crowded day of the week that is Friday and in between 18:00 to 21:00. The results of the survey were evaluated statistically. In addition to this, the equivalent continuous noise level, Leq, of the leisure space were taken in parallel to the questionnaire application to the users. Measuring of speech intelligibility via articulation index (AI) subjectively was the second phase of this study. Via application of the word list to the normal hearing users, the AI contours were prepared. Finally, objective and subjective measurements were analyzed in terms of speech interference during leisure activity in the space. As a leisure space, the relation between noise annoyance ratings and Leq did not show any significant difference in dart, billiards and play stations activities. However, in bowling activity and dining area, it was found that there is a significant relation between noise annoyance and Leq. This study reveals that users submit ambient noise of the space during leisure activity, they get in a common behaviour psychologically, they adjust their vocal noise that they create and finally these issues lead controlling of ambient noise by them. It means that users give up loudly speaking, they accept repeating or silence, focus on meal and they do not like getting in uncomfortable situation since their main activity is dining. For further study, the number of the samples in not only different leisure spaces, but also measurement points and sampling times should be increased to make clear hypothesis given above, since the study reveals completely different behaviour that is introduced in literature like cocktail party effect phenomenon.Item Open Access Flexible test-bed for unusual behavior detection(ACM, 2007-07) Petrás I.; Beleznai, C.; Dedeolğu, Yiğithan; Pards, M.; Kovács L.; Szlávik, Z.; Havasi L.; Szirányi, T.; Töreyin, B. B.; Yıldız, Yıldıray; Güneş, Kerem; Onural, DenizThe focus of this paper is to present a game theoretical modeling and simulation frame- work for the integration of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) into the National Airspace system (NAS). The problem of predicting the outcome of complex scenarios, where UAS and manned air vehicles co-exist, is the research problem of this work. The fundamental gap in the literature in terms of developing models for UAS integration into NAS is that the models of interaction between manned and unmanned vehicles are insufficient. These models are insufficient because a) they assume that human behavior is known a priori and b) they disregard human reaction and decision making process. The contribution of this paper is proposing a realistic modeling and simulation framework that will fill this gap in the literature. The foundations of the proposed modeling method is formed by game theory, which analyzes strategic decision making between intelligent agents, bounded rationality concept, which is based on the fact that humans cannot always make perfect decisions, and reinforcement learning, which is shown to be effective in human behavior in psychology literature. These concepts are used to develop a simulator which can be used to obtain the outcomes of scenarios consisting of UAS, manned vehicles, automation and their interactions. An analysis of the UAS integration is done with a specifically designed scenario for this paper. In the scenario, a UAS equipped with sense and avoid algorithm, moves along a predefined trajectory in a crowded airspace. Then the effect of various system parameters on the safety and performance of the overall system is investigated.Item Open Access Human activity recognition using inertial/magnetic sensor units(Springer, Berlin, Heidelberg, 2010) Altun, Kerem; Barshan, BillurThis paper provides a comparative study on the different techniques of classifying human activities that are performed using body-worn miniature inertial and magnetic sensors. The classification techniques implemented and compared in this study are: Bayesian decision making (BDM), the least-squares method (LSM), the k-nearest neighbor algorithm (k-NN), dynamic time warping (DTW), support vector machines (SVM), and artificial neural networks (ANN). Daily and sports activities are classified using five sensor units worn by eight subjects on the chest, the arms, and the legs. Each sensor unit comprises a triaxial gyroscope, a triaxial accelerometer, and a triaxial magnetometer. Principal component analysis (PCA) and sequential forward feature selection (SFFS) methods are employed for feature reduction. For a small number of features, SFFS demonstrates better performance and should be preferable especially in real-time applications. The classifiers are validated using different cross-validation techniques. Among the different classifiers we have considered, BDM results in the highest correct classification rate with relatively small computational cost. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.Item Open Access Psychological parameters for crowd simulation: from audiences to mobs(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2016) Durupınar, F.; Güdükbay, Uğur; Aman, A.; Badler, N. I.In the social psychology literature, crowds are classified as audiences and mobs. Audiences are passive crowds, whereas mobs are active crowds with emotional, irrational and seemingly homogeneous behavior. In this study, we aim to create a system that enables the specification of different crowd types ranging from audiences to mobs. In order to achieve this goal we parametrize the common properties of mobs to create collective misbehavior. Because mobs are characterized by emotionality, we describe a framework that associates psychological components with individual agents comprising a crowd and yields emergent behaviors in the crowd as a whole. To explore the effectiveness of our framework we demonstrate two scenarios simulating the behavior of distinct mob types.Item Open Access Ultrashort pulse formation and evolution in mode-locked fiber lasers(2011) Baumgartl, M.; Ortaç, B.; Schreiber, T.; Limpert J.; Tünnermann, A.Passive mode-locking in fiber lasers is investigated by numerical and experimental means. A non-distributed scalar model solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation is implemented to study the starting behavior and intra-cavity dynamics numerically. Several operation regimes at positive net-cavity dispersion are experimentally accessed and studied in different environmentally stable, linear laser configurations. In particular, pulse formation and evolution in the chirped-pulse regime at highly positive cavity dispersion is discussed. Based on the experimental results a route to highly energetic pulse solutions is shown in numerical simulations. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.Item Open Access Values and risk perceptions: a cross-cultural examination(Wiley-Blackwell Publishing, 2013) Kaptan, G.; Shiloh, S.; Önkal, D.This article examines the relationship between values and risk perceptions regarding terror attacks. The participants in the study are university students from Turkey (n = 536) and Israel (n = 298). Schwartz value theory (1992, 1994) is applied to conceptualize and measure values. Cognitive (perceived likelihood and perceived severity) and emotional (fear, helplessness, anger, distress, insecurity, hopelessness, sadness, and anxiety) responses about the potential of (i) being personally exposed to a terror attack, and (ii) a terror attack that may occur in one's country are assessed to measure risk perceptions. Comparison of the two groups suggests that the Turkish participants are significantly more emotional about terror risks than the Israeli respondents. Both groups perceive the risk of a terror attack that may occur in their country more likely than the risk of being personally exposed to a terror attack. No significant differences are found in emotional representations and perceived severity ratings regarding these risks. Results provide support for the existence of a link between values and risk perceptions of terror attacks. In both countries, self-direction values are negatively related to emotional representations, whereas security values are positively correlated with emotions; hedonism and stimulation values are negatively related to perceived likelihood. Current findings are discussed in relation to previous results, theoretical approaches (the social amplification of risk framework and cultural theory of risk), and practical implications (increasing community support for a course of action, training programs for risk communicators). © 2012 Society for Risk Analysis.
