Item Open Access Development of a supervisory controller for residential energy management problems(AACC, 2012-06) Akgün, Emre; Çakmakçı, MelihIn recent years, the infrastructure that supplies energy to residential areas has started to evolve into a multi-source system, just like in automotive industry in which hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have been replacing conventional gasoline vehicles. Multi energy source systems considered as a potential solution for carbon emission problems despite their challenges in their operation due to increased complexity. In this paper, a control design approach successfully applied in the automotive industry is used to solve a residential energy management problem. First, a dynamic programming method is applied to obtain optimal control actions for the representative demand profiles and then by using these results, a causal supervisory controller is developed. It is found that the developed baseline controller performs 1-2% better daily in its initial form in terms of operational costs, compared to available heuristic strategies. © 2012 AACC American Automatic Control Council).Item Restricted Vehbi Koç architect of Turkish automotive industry(Bilkent University, 2021) Redjep, Arzu; Khan, Moin; Azizov, Pasha; Ahmad, Roshaan; Aijaz, Saad; Ahmad, UsamaThe Turkish automotive industry is regarded as the most important component of Turkish economy’s manufacturing sector. In 2015 alone, the country managed to produce approximately one million motor vehicles, ranking it among the world’s largest automakers. This article aims to demonstrate how contributions of a single man, Vehbi Koç, founder of Turkey’s largest conglomerate the "Koç Group," propelled the sector to where it is today. In order to do so, history of the Turkish automotive industry from 1923 to 1990 will be thoroughly examined to acquire a better knowledge of how the industry changed through time as a result of Koç's efforts. This covers not only the companies Koç found in conjunction with international automakers, but also the economic opportunities he created. Finally, the article will compare his efforts to those of other Turkish automotive competitors in order to get a clearer sense of the extent of his services.
