    The development of railways in the late Ottoman Era

    Sultan Abdülmecîd initiated the railway project in the Ottoman Empire with the hope that it would bring back the economic and political glory the Empire had once known. This paper explores the wide-ranging political and social consequences of this decision, and the unfolding progress and development of the railways. It examines foreign influences, economic difficulties, political pressures, and rebellions in the Balkans, all of which exerted their own unique pressures on the Ottoman Empire and this project, leaving behind imprints that can be observed to this day. The legacy of the railway project hung heavy on the newly created Republic of Turkey but has since become an asset to the country.
