dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractBir uzak doğu dövüş sporu olan tekvando ilk olarak 1969 yılında Güreş Federasyonun altında Türkiye’ye resmi giriş yaptı. Bunu takip eden yıllarda gelen başarılar ve artan ilgi ile 1981 yılında Türkiye Tekvando Federasyonu kuruldu. Kendi federasyonunun kurulması Türk tekvando sporcuları için daha fazla Avrupa ve Dünya Şampiyonalarına gitmeleri için bir zemin hazırladı. Türk tekvando sporcuları seksenli yıllarda aldıkları 85 madalya ile Türkiye adına bir sürü ilke imza attılar. Bu başarılardan en çok göze çarpanı ise 1987 İspanya Dünya Şampiyonasında Tennur Yerlisu’nun Türkiye Cumhuriyet tarihine ilk Dünya Şampiyonu olan kadın sporcusu olarak adını kazımasıydı. 1966 doğumlu olan Tennur Yerlisu küçüklüğünden beri tekvando ile ilgilenen ve yetenekleri ile göze çarpan bir sporcuydu. Aslen Almanya doğumlu olan Yerlisu, tekvandonun hayatında ciddi bir yer edinmesiyle ailesi ile Türkiye’ye döndü. Henüz 15 yaşındayken milli takıma katıldı. İlk büyük başarısını da bundan tam bir yıl sonra 16 yaşındayken Avrupa Şampiyonluğunda kendi sıkletinde birinci olması ile elde etti. 1984 yılında ikinci kez Avrupa Şampiyonluğu kazandıktan sonra 1987 yılında Dünya Şampiyonluğunu alması tekvando kariyerindeki son büyük başarısı oldu. Bu başarının ardından gerçekleşen olaylar ile Türkiye Tekvando Federasyonu ile arası bozulan Yerlisu geçirdiği bir sakatlık ile tekvandoya kısa bir ara verdi. Bu arayı Milli takım antrenörü olarak tekvandoya geri dönerek sonlandırdı. Ama geçen kısa bir sürenin ardından akademik hayatına odaklanmak isteyen Yerlisu tekvando kariyerini genç yaşta sonlandırdı.en_US
dc.description.abstractTaekwondo, a far eastern combat sport, first entered Turkey in 1969 under the Wrestling Federation. The Turkish Taekwondo Federation was established in 1981 with success and increasing interest in the following years. The establishment of its federation prepared the ground for Turkish taekwondo athletes to go to more European and World Championships. Turkish taekwondo athletes broke new ground for Turkey with the 85 medals they won in the 1980s. The most striking of these achievements was Tennur Yerlisu's inscription in the history of the Turkish Republic as the first World Champion female athlete at the 1987 Spanish World Championships. Born in 1966, Tennur Yerlisu was an athlete interested in taekwondo since childhood and stood out with her talents. Originally born in Germany, Yerlisu returned to Turkey with her family after taekwondo took a serious place in her life. She joined the national team when she was just 15 years old. She achieved her first big success exactly one year later, at 16, when she won the European Championship in her weight category. After winning the European Championship for the second time in 1984, winning the World Championship in 1987 was the last big success in her taekwondo career. After this success, Yerlisu broke down with the Turkish Taekwondo Federation and took a short break from taekwondo with an injury. She ended this break by returning to taekwondo as the national team coach. However, after a short period, Yerlisu, who wanted to focus on her academic life, ended her taekwondo career at a young age.en_US
