dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractBelkıs Söylemezoğlu, Damat Ferit Hükümeti döneminde Harbiye Nazırlığı yapan Yüzellilikler’den Süleyman Şefik Söylemezoğlu’nun kızıdır. 1900’lerin çalkantılı siyasi atmosferinde Ortadoğu’nun ünlü casuslarının ahbabı, paşalardan tüccarlara zarafeti ile büyülediği kişilerle adını basından düşürmediği aşkların sahibi ve yüksek sosyetenin önemli isimlerindendir. Bu araştırmada Adrian Conan Doyle ile birlikteliğinden Nazım Hikmet’e kadar uzanan, oldukça geniş bir yelpaze de yürüttüğü aşk ve dostluk ilişkilerinin varlığı ve bu bağlamda takındığı çağı ötesi tutum dönem şartları ile paralel, karşılaştırmalı bir perspektiften incelenmiştir. Ailesinin politik görüşü ve sosyo-ekonomik düzeyi, 1900’lerin sosyal normları, etik değerleri, kadın ve güzellik algısı ile Belkıs Söylemezoğlu’nun karakter oluşumu Türkiye Tarihi üzerinde önem arz etmektedir.en_US
dc.description.abstractBelkıs Söylemezoğlu is one of the daughters of 150 personae non-grate of Turkey. She is one of the most famous people of the high society of Turkey who is known for her beauty, elegancy and sensational love life. Even though it is controversial, she also has her name in emissary cases during the politically chaotic times of 1900’s. In this article, her relationships of both romantic and not which includes people from Adrian Conan Doyle to Nazım Hikmet and her visionary attitude towards her days’ circumstances are detailly examined in a comparative, confirmative manner. The political place of her family and their socio-economic level, her reaction to 1900’s ethical values and perception of beauty reserve importance for the History of Turkey.en_US
