dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractYazı 1950’lerin başında bir köy olan Balgat’ın nasıl Ankara’nın modern bir semti haline gelişini ve moderleşme sürecini 2000’li yııllara kadar incelemekedir. Konu nüfus yapısı, iktisadi değişimler, sosyal - donanım, sosyokültürel örgütlenmeler olmak üzere dört farklı ana başlık altında incelenmektedir. Bu ana başlıkların ise çeşitli alt başlıklara ayrılması konu üzerinde geniş ve kapsayıcı bir çalışma yapma imkânı sunmuştur. Yapılan incelemelerde 1950-2000 yılları arasında Balgat’ta yaşamış kişilerle yapılan sözlü röportajlar esas alınmış gerektiği yerlerde ise yazılı kaynaklara başvurulmuştur. Ağırlıklı olarak sözlü kaynaklardan faydalanılması, söylenmemiş veya kayda geçirilmemiş pek çok olaya değinilmesine imkân sağlamıştır. Yapılan bu çalışma sadece Balgat özelinde değil Türkiye’nin 1950’li yıllardan beri içinde olduğu modernleşme sürecini anlamakta kullanabilecek bir kaynaktır.en_US
dc.description.abstractThe article analyzes how Balgat, which was a village in the early 1950s, evolved into a modern district of Ankara and its modernization process until the 2000s. The subject is examined under four main titles: demographic structure, economic changes, social services, and socio-cultural organizations. The division of these main titles into various sub-titles provided the opportunity to conduct a wide and inclusive study on the subject. Interviews with persons who lived in Balgat between 1950 and 2000 were used in the research, and written sources were consulted as appropriate. Many unsaid or unrecorded occurrences have been revealed thanks to the usage of mostly oral histories. This research may be helpful not just in Balgat but also in comprehending Turkey's modernisation process, which has been ongoing since the 1950s.en_US
